So, has anyone suggested that the guys try to take apart the Geiger counter gadget? Try to figure out what exactly (if anything) makes it different from a regular Geiger counter?

I don't think anyone has, but someone should. Someone like you! Shock twist! Go to it! It's not like my tear-stained testimonials are getting us anywhere.

I sent them a message the last week of May if they could put up some pictures of it (so that we could at least look at it), unless they've already figured out what it does. I never got a reply so maybe a more direct question is needed.

Trying to glean what it is via the "One step" video is frustratingly pointless. Can't tell shit with the better-than-before-but-still-shitty look we got. Damnit Jeff, stop WAVING IT AROUND!

YOU'RE TEARING ME APART JEFF!

Other than that, I pulled up some reference pictures, and the closest thing is still a Geiger counter, though painted black. An upload focusing on the thing would be amazing. Dunno if you've emailed 'em yet, Harbie, but I'm working on a message myself. Two messages are better than one.

Edit: Fired off. I asked about the black box, and Evan's recovery. Temptation to ask what he was doing checking out old tanks near-critical levels, but I don't want to push that.

Guess which line of that made me snicker like a middle schooler?

I promise, I am an adult.

Anywho, I do hope we get a response on that. I'm very curious as to what that box is.

And with that, I'm off to make a second attempt at Trial Six. /nothingtodowithanything

I've been thinking about this, and I'm wondering if we're likely to get a fruitful response.

For story reasons, I think it could only be a Geiger counter if the crew want to establish that Slenders is radioactive. This could explain some of the sickness experienced in his presence, but it would raise questions of why there are no lasting effect of radiation sickness--Vince's magnificent beard hasn't fallen out, after all. It would also seem kind of prosaic for a mysterious entity like Slendy, but I'd be willing to roll with it.[1]

If it's not an actual Geiger counter in-game, it would almost have to be some sort of detector custom-built to pick up Slendions or something, designed according to some principles known to the builder but not to us or the boys. This makes things troublesome--if it's not a Geiger counter, then they likely won't know what it is any more than we do.

[1] And I'd kind of love to see an AIP movie called "Attack of the Atomic Slender-Man!"

I still think it's some sort of ghetto-fied EMF detector

If that is the case, I suspect it would have been going crazy around the time they found it and Vinnie's subsequent close-encounter unfolded. BUT it could have not been turned on. OR they simply could have been too distracted to notice.
A Slender-detector would be a gift from the gods. I almost doubt they would be so lucky as coming into possession of such a tool. So I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe its not for detecting Slendy. I mean, the boys were about to hurtle through a rip in space-time when it was making all that noise. Maybe instead it's for detecting reality bending particles/Sario Rips/what have you.

It's also possible that, if it is a Slenditron 5000, its batteries were weak after who knows how long in storage. Maybe the clicking we (think?) we heard was its effect, but weak because it was lacking juice: it doesn't detect Slendy's presence but his approach.

Since we seem to be poised for endgame, I wouldn't be surprised if some elements show up that will speed things along. And it's very possible that knowing Slendy is present (or coming) would end up doing nothing but amping up the dread.

Another possibility I just thought of: It might not be a detector at all but a sort of Phantom Zone projector, something that will, when activated, allow our boys to enter the Arkverse. Its resemblance to a Geiger counter is purely incidental (and the result of a limited prop budget).

EDIT: Good call, Luipaard. Maybe it was the device itself that ripped spacetime open?

If it's not a Slendy Detector, I might have something to do with whatever the Fairmount Kids "succumbed" too.

I'm sorta doubting that they up and died(or Rake'd/killed). I almost imagine them simply fading away. I dunno, though.

(weeps inconsolably)

Seriously though, I do like the invention of wacky Slendytech. I think if you're going to do it in a zero-budget vlog series this is the way to do it, by showing it in a down-to-earth context with something relatable to what we can account for in experience, with a touch of the fantastic.

Also, Carnahan, I am not going to totally discount a Lovecraft collab and am awfully flattered at the offer. I just doubt I'd be of any useful assistance. I will get on finishing At The Mountains Of Madness just in case.

If you and Carnahan haven't already, you might want to check out Charles Stross's The Atrocity Archives and sequels. They're about the actions of an MI5-like agency in a Lovecraftian universe, but they're especially focused on grounding the fantastic in the mundane. And they're ripping yarns. Smile

Yeah, I was mostly responding to the idea of the object being a way of detecting Slenders. Ouroborus, that's a really good idea actually. I still tend to lean towards different kinds of deaths/ Corenthal doing mercy killing (as much as I want to love Corenthal and hug him until everything is okay)/ the possible drowning thing.

Also: Carnahan qaqa 2012

I'm printing the bumper stickers now.

Regarding the mercy killing idea, I just had an awesome(but rampant spec/squickish) notion:

Corenthal was misspeaking when he said the last child succumbed. What actually happened is that he finally succumbed to whatever(HABIT) and killed the last child...Just like he did 3 times before.

But I've been reading too much about H.H. Holmes, so yeah..
