You can read it five times and still find something new.
(might I recommend leaving little scribble notes in pencil in the margins? Wink )

That's a good idea. I'll keep that in mind.

I think that was a joke, House of Leaves is known for its... unique layout, which involves lots of footnotes, footnotes of footnotes, multi-page footnotes, and every other little type of amendment and scribble you can imagine.

Nonetheless, personally annotated editions of House of Leaves are very common. One of our rabbits buried their dog-eared, highlighted and scribbled-in copy for their first trial.

Nope, not a joke.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My first copy of HoL was a hand-me-down and I was first perplexed by the notes scribbled in the margins... till I got to the part where zampano claims to be scribbling in the margins, and johnny truant leaves instructions that his reader should be, also. It also helps keep track of the repetition, the repeated themes, and encoded content. If I remember correctly, the instructions are so explicit, they say in pencil... but it has been a couple years since I looked at it
EDIT: also, being such a work of meta-fiction, it seems only proper to be not only aware of the circumstance of reading while you're reading it, but to be actively participating in the de-stablizing effect

Either way, I'll use post-its or scribble in the margins. Knowing myself, I'll get mixed up and over complicate things without notes. I'm getting the book today (since it's a half day) and I might as well pick up post-its with it. I won't start for a few days though.

EDIT: Got it. Might actually start today.

Finished my other books, so I'm going to start HoL today. I'm considering noting my progress via Twitter or Goodreads. I'm in a few horror clubs on Goodreads, so I might make an open invitation for a readalong sort of thing.

Has anyone read the companion book The Whalestone Letters? The bulk of TWL is included in my version of HoL, but apparently the separate book has additional content.

*Whalestoe letters. The name is important.

A lot of the book has always been inside of HoL, but there are some interesting letters that are only in the separate novel. Scans of the extra pages would probably be easy enough to find, but I bought a separate copy anyway.

Also, protip: There are terrifying concepts, but keep in mind that HoL could just as easily be a love story. There are a lot of ways to look at it.

That plot thread isn't made obvious at all, but it's there.

Ah, apologies for the N. Bit muzzy-headed today. I can certainly see the love story angle.

So, um, is Stephanie not actually in NJ? It seems like we haven't seen her in forever. Perhaps that's what the wait has been for, and not TribeTwelve.

Not that far into HoL, but one of the themes mentioned in the book stuck and I wanted to bring it up here.

Repitition.
Echoes.

Sounds like what's happening here. History is repeating just a bit. (Going along with the Iteration theory.) Reincarnation and whatnot.

Or maybe I'm being stupid and should finish the book before I post my thoughts on anything. But it's been a while, so...

Might as well put in my personal HoL story since we're talking about it. :'> I started reading it thanks to EMH and the Slender Mythos (if you've seen the TVTropes page, they've got a theory that Slendy is The Minotaur ) and became so fond of it that I'm analysing it for my International Baccalaureate extended essay. Poor baby's stuffed with notes and academic journals, cover torn off then laminated to hold it in place...and I won't let anybody else touch it.

Jeff. Look what you did to me. <3

Whats with all this changing of colors and striking out of names? Is this some reference I've missed completely?
