Prepare for mega spoiler box of doom, 'cause I totally got this shit.

Ample amounts of thanks, credit, and kudos to CougarDraven, Verdett, elizibar, and the others who helped puzzle this out in Angora chat the past few days.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Remember the Roman numerals in the journal the veljko so nicely pointed out? Yeah, those are kind of important.
Each one is accompanied by a short phrase.
So to find the letter you need to replace each triplet with:
Find the numeral in the journal, go to the word identified by the Arabic number, and slide on down to the letter specified by the second Roman numeral in the triplet.

Problem being, we don't have all of the numerals, but so far, the key is looking like this:

1-1-1 = N
1-1-2 = O
1-2-1 = E
1-2-2 = S
1-2-3 = C
1-2-4 = A
1-2-5 = P
1-2-6 = E

2-1-1 = L
2-1-2 = E
2-1-3 = T
2-2-1 = U
2-2-2 = S
2-3-1 = I
2-3-2 = N

4-1-1 = T
4-1-2 = H
4-1-3 = E
4-2-1 = D
4-2-2 = A
4-2-3 = R
4-2-4 = K

5-1-1 = T
5-1-2 = H
5-1-3 = E
5-2-1 = F
5-2-2 = I
5-2-3 = R
5-2-4 = S
5-2-5 = T
5-3-1 = V
5-3-2 = O
5-3-3 = W

Which, after using find+replace, gives us a translation that looks like this:

(X2vi)(II3i)(III4vi)

Oh well done! I knew that my scribbling had to be good for something. I actually thought of those numerals first, but remembered we didn't have all the pages so I tried with the Ten Commandments, the Bill of Rights and so forth. Yeah. Bit of an idiot. Embarassed

Shall I tell the good doctor[1] about the find and ask him for more pages, or shall you?

I almost slapped myself when I remembered.
I was trying different kinds of cyphers. I set it up like a box, treated the triplets like a combination lock, went page-by-page through the notebook after Verdett brought it up... and then BAM. Right there. All this time.

I already alerted Rivers that I'd figured out the key and asked him to post the rest of the journal pages (and included a little sass-back to our dear hacker friend with it!). =D

Okay, here's my contribution. Since we don't have sentences III or VI through X yet, we can't fully solve this cipher. But what we can do is determine the length of the sentences. Somewhat.

Okay. We know that there are ten roman numerals hidden inside Theo's journal. We also know that we've only found four of them thus far. However, due to the pattern of the triplets, we can infer the word pattern of the remaining six phrases to be found in the journal.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
III - XX XXXX X XXXXXX XXX
VI - XXXXX XX X XX
VII - XXX XXX X XXXXX
VIII - XXXXXXXXX XX
IX - XXX X XXX X
X - XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX

The groups of X's represent letters in words. If I can determine in any way what these letters are, I'll update it here.

I treated it like a cryptogram and got something that sounds plausible, although it seems to have some typos.

They bring him strength.
Buh I em not one of them.

Lewa, that seems pretty plausible. I agree, though, there seems to be a few kinks, but hopefully we'll get those ironed out when Rivers posts the next pages of the journal. =D

You guys don't even know how happy I am to get this out of the way!

Just wanted to make a quick note with regards to the cypher:

I'm not on my laptop right now, so I don't have the entire key laid out in front of me, but after spending a bit of time this morning backtracking & trying to figure out the other Roman numeral messages, I'm pretty damn sure that 8-1-1 through 8-1-9 spell out "YGGDRASIL".

Which would make that first line "His children gather". Other than that, so far I have no other differences from your translation, I don't think, Lewa. Very Happy

@re: Yggdrasil

That gets me thinking, is the Yggdrasil symbolism a reference to mythology, HoL or other slendertainment? If it is to other slendertainment -- which one? EMH comes to mind, but it had no direct reference to the World Tree that I can think of.

I believe Just Another Fool had Yggdrasil involved.

Just thought I'd alert that there's been some activity in the past couple of days that I unfortunately neglected to see until just few minutes ago.

A question answered and a brief post on Tumblr, and two updates on the Blogger. And really, what else can I say but Jesus Christ.

Yes, I noticed. He responded to me asking if he was there, which is good, but the rest wasn't so good.
And my new stupid theory is that the journalist was the one who took over the Tumblr.
