I think regardless of what the being will look from a visual effects standpoint, they always work better for the audience if you don't see entirely what they look like.

The difference between making Jaws 31 years ago and War of the Worlds is that today, anything I can imagine, I can realize on film. Then, when my mechanical shark was being repaired and I had to shoot something, I had to make the water scary. I relied on the audience's imagination, aided by where I put the camera. Today, it would be a digital shark. It would cost a hell of a lot more, but never break down. As a result, I probably would have used it four times as much, which would have made the film four times less scary. Jaws is scary because of what you don't see, not because of what you do. We need to bring the audience back into partnership with storytelling.
~Steven Spielberg
Emphasis added.
I really hope JJ Abrams takes this to heart. Especially since Super 8 is an homage to Spielberg's earlier work.
ETA Nice work sup3rvIII!

Freud would have a field day, or at least a pleasant walk in the park

Sup3rViii;Good imaginative renderings. You and Janesmith should collaborate on something, she's very good with PS and has a good imagination, as well.
Adm_ and Melody;
Ditto, if this is, indeed, going to be an homage to SS's early work, i.e., Jaws(especially) and CEOT3K, you didn't even see the major McGuffin until well into the film. With Jaws, a few musical notes and what you DON'T see were probably more effective than anything else. The audience had an opportunity to experience the "It's" presence by way of musical cues, and the reaction of the victims to the unseen's attack. How vivid the image was when Sheriff Brody is moaning about having to toss chum over his shoulder for what seemed (to him) like a useless waste of time.
For any Los Angelenos who knew of this, I first saw Jaws at the Plitt Century City Theater; a very nice theater at the time, that possessed seats that would recline to a very comfortable position. It was amazing to see a crowded theater of moviegoers, who were initially on the edge of their seats, all simultaneously recline backwards as far as they could when the first real close-up image of Bruce came on the screen.
So JJ has set quite a high mark to attempt to achieve for his "It" to be considred the STIES. I sincerely hope he can pull it off, because who can't recall the first time they saw in the movies something that had such a deep psychological effect as Psycho, or Jaws? It's hard to imagine that that effect can happen again, given all of the "over-the-top" blood, gore, and gruesomeness that this generation has been exposed and desensitized to with fictional, and real-life, real time events such as 911, the Hollywood bank shootout, or various images of whatever is the latest war, drug cartel execution(s), or other terrorist carnage aftermath footage.

A thought..
You know, STIES might not be just the alien itself but perhaps something scary the alien is caught doing on that film..??
And yes.. The Plitt theaters.. I actually live just a few blocks from where that was..Fond memories..

[OFF TOP] Melodyman;
Yeah I can remember seeing CEOT3K at a very nice theater in Pasadena. Had to wait a couple of hours in line for about an 8 p.m. showing. I and the person that came with me brough a blanket and a scrabble board and had a grand old time.
Probably one of the neatest times was seeing 2001 at the Egyptian in Hollyweird. When it showed the feline looming over its dinner you could hear the flies circling because of the awesome sound in the theater.
But, then again, maybe they were real flies???
Ahh, the memories...

sties0008.jpg gets my vote.
Something very creepy came over me when I saw that pic.
Interesting thing about that Page interview clip making the rounds, Page said it will be 'like Elvis' claiming that we'll be wowed the minute it comes out of the railcar. Page also mentioned the possibility of Man-In-Suit action.
