Out of curiosity, can we expect to see this ad again on television? If yes, I'm wondering if there's a possibility of more iterations of those final 3 seconds.. Rolling Eyes

That one ^ seems to be smaller and with a really long tail.

Then you guys saw this one

its big and seems to have teeth. Unless theres something else I'm supposed to be seeing here.

As much as I'd like to think there's images of the creature thing, I think this is a case of pareidolia. You circled the same object as two different things here. I'm pretty sure the "eye" is a street light.
All the other things that make up the "head" look to be distant buildings, a road of some sort or maybe train tracks, and, to my eyes, maybe a river with a bridge over it (the long black thing could be a bridge, but it's a matter of perspective, it could just be something small close to the lens).

At this point, the monster is the camera itself. Maybe he got creative in the sense that it is inside there or some shit.

Either way, the last reeling of the camera at the very end (just before the title) is the only OBVIOUS source of information. Any change in STIES?

Oh and getting clues from the camera that fell down, if it was filming the monster or something in particular, it probably isn't in sight anymore.

I knew it was probably just wishful thinking. ;]

The Greatest Show on Earth

you all need to read this article linking the train wreck in Super-8 to the train wreck in The Greatest Show on Earth (the first movie Speilberg ever saw in a theater) - in particular... this quote:

Now if you haven't seen THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, the climactic third act highlights DeMille's epic carnival drama with a terrific crash of the two circus trains at night. When the man who stages the train stoppage realizes his actions have endangered his unrequited love, he drives his car onto the tracks attempting to stop her train from hitting the halted engine ahead. His sacrifice is meaningless in saving lives and averting the collision as the entire contents of the circus — performers, animals and equipment — crash into a tangled heap of metal and mortality. Likewise, the truck driver speeds headlong into the oncoming engine in SUPER 8 with intentionally destructive results...

the link is here http://filmedge.wordpress.com/2010/05/17/abrams-super-8-close-encounters-of-the-spielberg-kind/

And the movie is definitely set in 1979... not saying there aren't any flashbacks to the 1960's, but the main story is set in 1979.

I think we should all pull ourselves back to the pictures of the theorized "monster jaw" and the clippings of missing dogs and people's hands and such.[/list]

Close Encounters

And I believe the flashing headlights and the glass shattering in the camera shop windows (next to the Jeweler's store) is an homage to the effects the spaceships had on vehicles in Close Encounters, and an homage to the shattering of the glass in the tower near the end of Close encounters. I don't think there is any telekinesis involved in these shots.

When the glass is shattered from the camera shop, the men are looking up. The area they are looking up at is the area where they filmed the spaceship scene (this was why I gave a breakdown of where things were on Main Street Weirton, WV). I think it shows that the spaceship is causing the glass to break.

First, thanks Batman and myrddin for referencing my blog article/post about the Super8/Spielberg connections from last year.

Having seen the Super Bowl spot now, I agree with you all that SUPER 8 is going to be chock full of direct and indirect references to Spielberg films of the '70s/'80s — even this short new look is wall-to-wall with themes and shots reminiscent of CE3K, ET . . . and I'm now suspecting that our local deputy fighting to keep his family and town safe will borrow from influences from JAWS as well. There seems to be a little WAR OF THE WORLDS thrown in too.

But I'd caution against any overreaction to seeing ET influences and thinking JJ's film will automatically be "another ET" that's "soft" and so on, as some have. I doubt JJ et al would introduce a soft, family-friendly story with the web domain "scariest thing I ever saw." With all this destruction and military presence in view, I don't think we're in for another cute, cuddly alien tale. I doubt it will go so horrifically dark as JAWS either, but imagine a blend of JAWS' creature story importance and the sci-fi mystery of CE3K, centered around the emotional core of every troubled/divorced family unit so prevalent in Spielberg's films. In this tribute era chosen by JJ, Spielberg films often had a well-developed dark strain to them and he only really got "cute" once with ET.

Batman, you mentioned the camera shop windows blowing out in reference to CE3K. Admittedly we're not seeing final film in the TV spot, but I noticed that only the windows of the camera shop are being blown out. I'd think if the shattering glass was a general effect of some alien force (i.e. the mothership note in CE3K), it wouldn't target one set of windows on the block, but shatter windows up and down the street.

Frame-by-frame does show other soldiers/people dropping in the distance, but no other shop seems to be affected the same way. Then again, it's tough to judge from only 7 frames in one shot. But the camera shop window explosion seems very 'targeted'... either from within or from outside. The glass definitely blows outward in two separate detonations rather than simply 'shattering' in place or even blowing in.

Like the early trailer clips from WAR OF THE WORLDS, I am positive that this particular shot does not include elements (a creature, a weapon or the cause of destruction) that will be IN the exact same shot when we see the final film.

Looking at it again... perhaps you are right about the windows, but I still think they are looking up at the ship. Is there other evidence to suggest telekinetic powers that I'm missing?
Nice work on the CE3K / Greatest Show on Earth history and similarities, by the way.

Can someone help me....

In the frame below there's some sort of "electronic" device kind of thing. Now in the trailer, the guy in the frame grabs the cord of it as he's getting pulled down that aisle. What do you think that device is?

Ha - maybe it's a tape recorder that's the source of our "blue can/lion on it" mp3 audio file.
