I mapped the new york map over the cipher we have to see what would happen, and the map key just seems to cover some of the code too perfectly to be a coincidence, at least to me. I didn't resize the map or the cipher at all. And also the arrows seem to be pointing at CJJSH. Maybe someone can figure out if I've stumbled onto a real clue or if it's just coincidence? I'm horrible at decryption

Wow, really good thinking there, well done.

Now, what the hell does CJJSH mean?

I noticed something else. I looked at all instances of the comic cover images on the Big House Comics websites.

And then I noticed something peculiar about the URL logo on both odd-jobs.biz and bighousecomics.com.

It's a 3 by 3 grid, but the color of the bottom right grid has a different color from the rest. It seems to be saying "there's something important on the bottom right of something". And then I realized that out of the 4 comic covers, the last one does have something peculiar on the cover, namely that odd square pattern on the bottom right, with 3 mini-squares at the corners, but not at the bottom right corner. I dont think it's a barcode, they look different, and this isn't an old comic book, so its barcode shouldn't look different. Furthermore, when I divide the cover into a 3 by 3 grid, the weird square is the only note-worthy thing in the bottom right grid. I have no idea what this means, but it seems like too many things fit together for it to be a coincidence.

I could be going down a completely wrong road, but I thought I should at least point out what I saw

on a completely unrelated and trivial note, old soldiers never die is a song.

The square in the bottom right is a 2D Barcode or QR Code - if you scan it, it will take you to a web address.

Enhanced the image with GIMP. I haven't tried scanning it yet; I still have to download an app to do so.

It probably just takes you to a page on bighousecomics.com, but we might as well try. Here it is:

I tried scanning it with my friend's barcode scanner on his phone. It didn't work. Upon further analysis, I believe you're missing a whole entire column on the far left hand side. Try to reenhance the image... Mothereffer didn't work last time...

yeah my iphone scanner didnt work either. Maybe it's impossible to enhance a barcode beginning with such a low quality, in which case I was going down the wrong road

Yeah, if that is indeed the largest version of the QR, then it'll be very very hard to decode. The lower right marker is visibly incomplete, so who knows what else is off. It's 29x29 pixels which is a valid size, but the markers are wrong, so the original may not be 29x29. Too small, too blurry, would take lots of guesswork and trial and error to find a match. Reverse engineering with variants of the website url to make a QR code don't produce similar matches either. Seems like it's on the right track, but not sufficiently similar.

That's all I could get from the picture on the website. I suppose enhancement of a blurry, faded image would lead to an discrepancies somewhere. If anybody actually knows anything about enhancing an image, by all means try to enhance it through photoshop; it cant be any worse than my attempt. Like thebruce, I checked the QR encryptions as well for the main pages of the bighousecomics site and twitter, but none seemed similar. So where does it lead to?

I suppose the least we can do is get an actual copy of the first issue after the launch and go from there.

i think enhancing is not quite the way to go...enhancing generally means changing the information contained in the image which would thus render it null and void

the best bet is just to increase the resolution by pixel size but I'm assuming that's been done

Sonofabitch, if this is all a fcking plot so they can get money off of us, I'm going to be pissed.

I know some ARG's cost money, but still...

EDIT ADD:

Not to try to deflate your bubble, but the 3x3 grid is standard on most website building websites (ex. youshouldnthavedonethat.net as of Feb. 13th, 2011). It's the default bookmark icon, but can be willingly changed.

I don't think that the bookmark icon is linked to the matrix code on the front page of the comics, as the bookmark icon is standard, and matrix codes are becoming more and more abundant on literature (ex. Sherrlyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series has a matrix code on the back), but the matrix code should still be looked into just in case...

As soon as someone buys the comic and scans it...

hm it's the first time I've ever seen it :/ good thing there are fact-checkers here. The bar code might still be something though. Of course they'd like to make money off of this.

And, do we include the key in our answer, or not?

Just joining in... sad I missed the test!

Anyway, I'm from NYC and when I first saw that map I immediately thought it was pointing at ground zero. I haven't overlaid the original map with this drawn on map, however.

edit -- looking at it again, that is most definitely WTC.

What is WTC?

I also scanned the image and came to nothing. Anyone planning on buying the comic? It may not even be a clue or on the actual comics.
