[OFFTOPIC?]The Book idea...

I have been thinking maybe we should all help to write or contribute to a book (when this thing is over) about the ARG so we have a hard copy of how we spent all these hours of our lives trying to solve the damn Oct 1st pic! Like one of the internet guides but explaining EVERYTHING from the beginning to the bitter end. Maybe we could sell it on that CafePress site or something (with profits going to "the charity of people who went insane playing ARGs!" lol)

Thoughts anyone...

EDIT: Maybe we co-write it with the PMs to get both sides of the story?

cool, writing it with the pms would be really good:

"And we all just sat in #matrix threating over this clue which we were in no way closer to solving, as we were becomming the One"

"Meanwhile, we were watching them hidden away on our fake names, trying not to laugh so much...we made that clue in such a way that it would take them a while, I think it was good the way we made it, and equally interesting just watching them, and how they solved it..."

something like that, would be quite cool Smile

The Biography of an ARG... I'd definitely be interested in contributing.

I could contribute

I would (and several others I know would, too) attemempt scholarly commentary on the topic. The book The Matrix and Philosophy was great and an enjoyable read.

As I have said before: as an experiment in narrative and collective organization this "game" is perfect for investigation.

I've got dibs on a chapter! Surprised

Great idea Insomniac! I think this ARG'ing stuff is really worth writing a book on, it's such a novel way of working together and tackling problems of very different kinds... I would be glad to contribute!

I've thought about writing something in story form told from the point of view from one of the players. But not as it was a game, but as some Joe Shmoe who was job searching and happened to find a website about a software company called Metacortex.

This Joe Shmoe would represent everyone and no one. He/she is the one telling the story in first person: "I was in my senior year in college and searching for a job for when I finally graduate from [Redland University?], and I happened upon a website of a software company: Metacortex..." And the story goes on from there. It would be told from the point of view of someone who does not understand computers that well (yeah why is he/she applying for Metacortex, well maybe just as a secretary or something), and the story would describe the problems in the way they were solved step by step. The Shmoe would get some of his/her friends who are computer knowledged and that person would be another character and describe to Shmoe how he/she solved a certain puzzle. But Shmoe would solve a lot of puzzles as well.

It would be like a Michael Crichton book. Lots of helpful facts thrown into a fictional story. What do you think?

I've been wondering for some time if the PM's would be logging stuff.

I hope so. I'd be interested in how many near misses we had.

"Yeah, and then they were really close to solving the Oct 1st. Pic at paintover and someone suggested a connection with hamburgers, which caught everyone out and before you know it they'd gone off in the wrong direction. Real Shame man, soo close." Very Happy

Absolutely Marl... when the curtain is peeled back, I'd really like to hear the story from the PM's side of the fence.

We could call it "the Heartbreak and the Horror" and dedicate it to the October 1 Paintover...

I think a book about this would be great. I also would rather that it was written from real-people perspectives (i.e. players and... my god, still can't bring myself down to calling them PMs). I know I'd like to let the world know how I feel about Random, lol. Anyway, I'd be not only glad, but also somewhat honored to contribute.

Well, having found this whole thing 5 days ago and only just managed to catch up on what's happened, I'd love to see the book! Mainly cos I still haven't quite figured out how it all hangs together...

Hopefully sometime I'll contribute...

Something like this would be really cool. Just an idea. Although that point of view does not represent a nonbiased view of this ARG. The story could be written from the point of view of someone who does not know they are in the Matrix, so they have no idea what the matrix is. And therefore no mention of the Matrix would ever come into play until when/if it ever does in the actual ARG.

The reason why I say it should be written like this is because we really don't know enough of the game characters to know their true motives, so if it was written from the point of view of someone on the outside looking in, then that would be part of the mystery is just figuring out what the hell is with these characters. When this game is done and something like this was written not only would it be fun from a nonplayer's point of view, but for those of us who DID play it, we would get that feeling all over again of investigation and mystery, and we could identify with the narrator of the story.

Actually, for those reasons (^^) exactly, I think it'd work much better as a non-fictional bit of work: The story is told, but is fleshed out by commentary by both sides (so the back-story is told as well). I really don't know how well this would work as a piece of fiction... there are just too many characters that seem unrelated. I mean, we still can't connect Caesar to Beth, and that just doesn't make a cohesive story.

I like the idea of a documentary apporach much better: the PMs give a bit of background, the "story" is set up and then we tell how we solved the bunny. (I'm using "we" here in a very general, collective sense here...)

Hey, guys and gals,
I've finally decided to get around to doing a mock-up of the front cover and a very short introduction for our proposed book; now, I realise this book thing is probably very much in the air, but considering how much effort (and our lives) we've put into this thing, I think it would be a crying shame not to document it (that's the journalist in me talking Wink ). I also realise that some of you might consider that I'm starting this a little early, considering the game hasn't even come close to finishing yet (I hope!) - but, come on, it's really early in the morning here and I'm bored and can't sleep (that's my defense and I'm sticking to it!).
I will of course welcome all criticism - but go easy! This is still a work in progress.
However, while something tangible, something we can put on our coffee tables and actually be proud of, would be nice, I think we might also want to seriously consider taking the CloudMakers route and create a website just for us (assuming of course we all want to stick together afterwards and continue to solve ARGs Wink )
The mock-up is attached below.

EDIT: Some chapter title ideas:
The MetaCortex Conspiracy
The MetaDex Beta
MetaVRX
Employee of the Month
Cooking Toast (sorry, Toast, I couldn't resist Laughing )
