CLU's Baoding Balls First Stab at a Design I still need to work out the exact scale; But, this is the general construction idea.
I can think of a few variations on this that would have slight impact on the maintenance/usability for these.
Anybody feel like commenting on it before I attempt to build?

I can't picture these at all. (And I soooo need to resist any "balls of steel" snark.) Is there a still frame from the movie someone could post to refresh my memory of what it is you are trying to reconstruct?

Agreed. Also, I don't see green anywhere, so where is the spring?

I don't have a frame from the movie, but they are the balls that Clu are rolling around in his hands when Sam and Rinzler. I believe that is the only time they are seen in the movie.

ya, i know what the balls are, or at least culturally the ones i've seen in real life, which are just plain steel, which is why i wondered what exactly there is to be custom-made here to make them look like the ones in the movie.
Were they painted or something? Is Rogi doing something special with an internal mechanism? (The ones i've handled have had some sort of metallic spring inside which makes a soothing sound when they roll)
(googling now) Maybe I'm thinking of "ben wa balls" -- errr, maybe not -- now that i've looked up baoding perhaps I've been confusing the two terms.

I'm guessing they really didn't make a sound (they might also have been plastic with the metallic chrome coating) since the guts were replaced with the LE wire.

Here is a still from the movie of them: http://pics.livejournal.com/telera/pic/000gprtx/ . They were painted black and along the middle of them they glowed clu orange.

Thanks for posting the pic of the balls from the film.
They appear twice, I think.
Primarily, we see CLU use them to control the orientation of the Disk Wars arena.
The design is a cross-section of the balls. The two hemispheres thread together , lighting when fully seated. The spring holds the button cell (battery) in it's cavity while also being part of the circuit for the positive power to the LED.
And, catherwood. I made the same mistake about Ben-Wa vs: Baoding till very recently.

I pulled this off of the TRON second screening app on my iPad. At least it has dimensions!

I'm gonna put this one on hold for a while (Until I can get better at machining spheres, anyway); But, in the interim, I'm working on something else and need some help.
As our friends across the pond would say, I'm pants at capturing screenshots from flash media. Does anyone have or know where I can get a video of the original TRON arcade machine's screen when it's in it's idling loop?
Something like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ExhEFq8TIc
but in a format that I can grab caps from.
Ultimately, I'll be snagging a cap from the video every
5
10 seconds till it loops.
ETA: My target resolution is 96x64 so image quality isn't a primary concern.
You guys are gonna love this one when it's done.

Didn't mean to make a big production about it.
Basically, what I've done is retrofitted a 3in.TRON cabinet from spinmaster with the guts from a keychain photo viewer . It works great and looks awesome, but the pics need to be added. It's hard-coded to display images at 10 second intervals, so I thought I'd just cop images from the idle routine every 10 seconds. That... or cap each change in the screen as they occur and display those, in order.
I'd work from the YT video I posted a link to if someone could tell me how to save it as an AVI or other CMP-playable format.

no biggie, let me just swing down to ElecTRONica tonight to grab GeraldBarnacle's Flynn's Arcade tokens and I'll walk ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE ARCADE to the Tron machine and snap some photos of the screens. Does that work for you?
By the way, I really want you to make these balls. we can get anything you need made printed on the 3D machine over here. If we get enough backers between here, Tron Sector, and RPF we could have them cast, shipped to you, you could do the assembly and shipping.
Are you game?

Getting the screen pics would be awesome, Steve.
I hadn't considered doing the balls in resin. Lemme think about how that might work and reply back. I'd like to think they could be handled without worrying about damaging the finish or structure. I was going the "powder-coated metal hemispheres" route. If anybody knows a source for pre-made hollow metal balls or hemispheres of the proper size , let me know. Ladles are all too big and melon ballers are all too small; But, I think the kind of ladle you see at Mongolian BBQs would be about right. I'm the king of repurposing. I once jump-started a car using nothing but a pocketknife and a beer can. Trying to work with the metal balls that have the steel chimes inside has proven a test of both skill and luck (If you don't pierce the sphere in just the right place, the guts play havoc with trying to take the process any further.). Would your guys be able to cast clear resin for the light optic part? Doing a whole injection molding run seems like it'd be way too expensive to get molds made.
