Postcard received in the post
Existing arg? New Arg? Breathe even?

This morning I received a postcard - it was addressed to Dick Fosbury [NOT my name, but the name of a high jumper - famous for the Fosbury flip] at my address.
It had a picture of some type of landmass, with a circle around it, divided into 12 sections [reminding me quite strongly of a horoscope] with dashes in the border.
I'm going to scan it tomorrow morning but [and here is the irony] I'm currently running an Arg as well and - well - this whole thing is very similar to the things I've been doing in mine...
Indeed - the postcard is from the National Maritime Museum where I've been setting my previous games!
Er...
Basically - wondering if anyone out there has received an odd postcard in the last few days? If you have, can you pvt me please, and/or put your info here - I'll scan mine in tomorrow morning when I can get to my scanner!

[This is not promoting my arg in anyway - just asking for others info!]

postcard scan

imprint on the eclipse side:
ALTHOUGH HENRY DEVISED IT YOU WILL
NEED BENTLEY'S MIL N TO READ IT
1909
ED

On the actual darkened circle of the eclipse
20 o 10 o

Notice London in the address has 0 o as well...

I worked out most of the circle markings - possibly -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
to be morse code, giving 5 letter combinations - which, when using Bentley's code phrase book , gave me a message [can't find the transcript message right now - will edit later with worked out message! damn need to tidy my room more!]
[/spoiler]

Mount Pleasant is in North London and so no need for Par Avion [air mail] sticker... nothing - so it seems underneath...

the three little circles are also pin pricks that go through - as is the centre of the circle [imagining a compass]

Landmass on postcard

Well, the landmass is definitely Antarctica.

The two pinpricks inside the landmass are closest to research stations Vostok and Dome C, but don't quite map to them true, and so I'm guessing that's not germane especially as the third blob is outside the land area. However, it could be that those marks are indicators of areas whose latitude and longitude are in some way significant - hence the repeated 'degrees' signs in the text?

Are you able to give us more details about these 'imprints'? Can you photograph them somehow?

The "morse" at 8 o'clock doesn't seem to be 5 characters :S So I can't get a Bentley code out of it. Otherwise here is what I got (reading clockwise from 9 o'clock):
Quote:
--. --- .-- - .-
GOWTA
FROM

.-. . ..-. --. .
REFGE
SHADE

.. --.. -.. .. -.-.
IZDIC
LAND(s)

-. . --.. -.- .-
NEZKA
OPEN(s) UP

-. -.-- ... ...- ---
NYSVO
PASSAGE(S) TO

-. --- -- .... .-
NOMHA
OTHER(S)

--- -.. .-.. .- ...
ODLAS
1 Place

-. .. -... ..- ...-
NIBUV
OPERATION(S)

.... --- . .-- .-.
HOEWR
HIGH

.. ...- -... . -.
IVBEN
JUMP

.--- -.-- --- -. -.-
JYONY
MATTER(s)

--- ...- -. -.--
OVNY
??????

The only Bentley code starting with OVNY is OVNYL which is "HAS BEEN RECOVERED"

So my guess for the translation is:
Quote:
"Operation high jump. matter has been recovered. from shade land opens up passages to other place.

Also noting that "DICK FOSBURY" and "LONDON" are written in two different inks.

The pin hole out away from the mainland could be the Balleny Islands:

Operation Highjump (OpHjp)

That checks out!

Operation Highjump...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
... was a US Navy operation in the Antarctic! It began in late 1946 but was terminated abruptly 6 months early for unexplained reasons.

from what you've given, all i've found are some websites about a UFO cover up and a plot involving Hitler fleeing Germany in a submarine and living in an arctic base into the 1950's.

All the other sites i looked into looked too legit, and the people behind them checked out, so dead end...

I could be wrong, but it looks like there is a real expedition to recover the airplane and the three soldiers bodies. i dont know what this means for this possible trailhead...

Edit: It should also be noted that Operation Highjump occurred before Fosbury was even born...

I think we need more to go on... Dunno

Trying to help

Can you make out the writing @ Long. E. 150?
And for what it may be worth:

The permutations of "20 degrees and 10 degrees" land you in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa or somewhere on the continent (Chad, Mauritania, Angola, Niger). But with London being assigned 0 degrees, maybe the 20 and 10 are meant to be in relation to London. Though this could just be the year 2010.

Or maybe the card is to be overlaid onto a map (which one?) of London and the pinholes might line up with something.

Also as far as the 1909 there's this: Australian explorers T.W. Edgeworth David and D. Mawson were the first to claim to have located the magnetic south pole in 1909 as part of the Shackleton expedition of 1907-1909.

no more developments

thanks to all so far - i'm running my own arg so not given this much more time - tbh, unsure if wind up or what - but liking the london being 0 degres idea - don't know what to make of it though - so - if no-one's received a postcard or any other prompters - am I to asume either someones running something and just targetting me, or winding me up, or...?
any opinions please - either post here or pm me - thanks!

Just found this...

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/antarctica/antartica11.htm

Don't know if it might give some possible background to an ARG.
