Theories From Superbowl Trailer
just some mental dot-connecting based on the new trailer

Murder me if this shouldn't be its own new topic (and please delete it if you have the power), I haven't been unfictioning a lot lately. Just thought I'd share some theories and ideas my family and some friends came up with after seeing last night's trailer.

First of all, the E.T. throwback stuff is hardcore. There's no way they don't want us to think about E.T. (I mean, Christ, the bicycles), and I assume that this is either indicative of a potential human-on-alien partnership, or it's ironic because this alien is a total havoc-wreaker. I'm leaning towards the former.

Here's the big one: the narrator who says "don't tell anyone, they'll come for you," is almost definitely our alien, right? Unplaceable accent, cryptic use of the english language, all that good cliche alien stuff. Plus (this is a stretch) the voice sounds very old, and I assume the "Living Relic" is probably pretty damn old. I know this isn't Transformers with old bearded robots with walking sticks and all that nonsense, but if they're going to anthropomorphize our alien with language, why not an appropriate voice to go along? All this would point towards the idea that maybe, whatever this alien is, the ancient relic/reminder/whatever, is super old or related to something very old in our planet's history -- pyramids, aztecs, etc.

So basically, my generalized theory is that the government decides to move the Living Relic, an alien that is our only existing link to and evidence of something, perhaps our evolutionary history or the truth behind something otherwise unexplainable, because they don't want the public to know about it (why? just because it's an alien, or because of the information it knows/represents?), someone finds out and busts that shit up, and these kids have to somehow help the alien return home/wherever, and he delivers the message from the trailer because obviously the government is coming and they want their alien back and they'll kill to get it.

It's an intense version of E.T. that takes the government conspiracy angle to new heights, basically. That's my guess, anyway. Anyone else come up with any good theories based on the superbowl commercial? I'm reading a lot of people say that they didn't think it was very good, didn't reveal enough, etc. etc.

Oh, yes, this sounds if not Spielberg-esque, but very JJ Abrams-esque: the living relict, Lovecraftian fears. And since we have Biospeleologists in the story, it is very likely an ancient being (even if from another world).

It's like Slusho - the weird stories from http://www.slusho.jp were very Lovecraftian, and almost about Cthulhu.

I would be very pleased if the alien was human-like in it's appearance (humanoid symmetry, two arms, two legs, etc.), and was somehow responsible for humans (contributed some DNA or something to the first living thing/s on earth?).

Yes, this would be paradoxical, but very realistic: people try to kill an Alien, without to knowing, that it's their ancestor. And the real cruel aliens are people.

I'm actually boring by all the movies like "good human beings against creepy extraterrestrial inviders".

While we are all speculating on plot, I might as well throw in a theory.
If it stands to be a tribute to Spielberg or have similarities, I think it would be like this.

The aliens from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" ( filmed 1977, by the way )
return, along with the people they took with them.
Those people are kept at area 51 as "scientists", along with artifacts
and possibly an alien ambassador. [Could Josh Minker's dad be one of those Scientists?]
The wreck happens, freeing the alien, artifacts, etc.
Possibly the kids just happen to be filming at the wreck.
The surviving alien and or "scientists" befriend the kids. ( Like ET )
Big Brother [ Government or big business ] is brought in to retrieve the "property".
Lots of collateral damage.
ET, "Scientists", and town are saved by the mother ship.

So, maybe it's a "Close Encounters" / "E.T." sequel???

I think maybe the living alien relic is being moved, the aliens have been watching and find this a very opportune moment to try and free him.

King of the aliens species or something along those lines.

I had a wild thought while reading along: what if this train was relocating MORE than one top secret entity? What if there's the plot complication of finding/rescuing a 'good' alien while a 'monster' is on the loose in town too?

There are an awful lot of military weapons and destruction evident in the location videos and this TV spot for an E.T.-style 'good' alien to be on the loose.

Unless JJ's also paying tribute to 1941 too! Laughing

Good call, we really know next to *nothing* about the plot so far, I hope there are plenty of twists and turns that will shock me even if I manage to accurately predict any plot points. I trust JJ to blow my mind at least once.

Everyone seems to think the voice in the trailer says "Do not speak of this. If you do they will find you." Am I the only one that thinks it's "If you do IT will find you."?

Yeah, and funny thing: I may be wrong, but I have the feeling in the trailer, the army is shooting at the running kids, especially in the scene in this screenshot.

It would very pretty fit to the original ET, where not only the parents worry about ET, but also the army. And children know, this alien is good. Because perhaps there is another "bad" alien, and people are always too silly and keep various aliens for one common danger, without distinguishing between evil and peace.

So perhaps in the movie children will save one alien, while the army will try to get it.

So, perhaps the alien looks very humanoid (the kid in the lense?). And perhaps one of the running kids is an alien?
