 Adding to the Mythos
How much is too much?

So, I'm planning out a Slendy blog and the story I have envisioned doesn't exactly fit with the currently established lore (as far as I'm aware). It will more than likely be against all the current continuity and run separately, similar to the way Marble Hornets ignores everything else.

I don't exactly want to reveal anything as I'm expecting the changes to be quite dramatic and defining for my work, but I was wondering what people would consider going too far with the Mythos would be?

I have seen the thread that says the dos and don'ts of making a Slendy blog, but that doesn't quite touch on this, just the way that the blog should be made.

As an example, do you approve of Slendy being able to communicate with us on a level we understand? Do you think that Slendy having Masked minions is a good idea? Would it be ok for Slendy to be able to talk? What if he was wearing something other than his normal black suit?

The results of this will more than likely not change my work, but it will help me judge how well recieved it will be. If I've planned something that is heavily disliked it will likely be removed, but other than that my plans are set.

Marble Hornets doesn't acknowledge other stuff because it was first, I think.

Anyway, I think it really depends on HOW it's done. I've seen things that have given Slender Man a mouth, but did it in a way that it didn't seem off.

There was talk early on (and I think also in more recent threads somewhere), about how maybe Slendy appears differently to different people. For example, the suit is part of his attempt to draw us in. We instinctively thing of men in suits as men in power, and generally that we can trust them. However, if Slendy was stalking someone who didn't trust in suited men (or in a culture that didn't have suits or held different concepts of suits), then him being in a different outfit wouldn't be out of place.

But to keep myself from rambling about this, I'll just iterate that it probably depends on how it's done. Changing just one thing, if done poorly, can translate as "one thing too many". On the other hand, not developing the mythos at all is also frowned upon. It's a balance.

I seem to have rambled anyway, sorry. Razz

((on that note, I like the idea of Slendy at least attempting to communicate with us at a level we can understand. But I imagine that he is so vastly different than us that it might be difficult. *shrug*))

How much is too much? Go search for the slenderblog Breaker sometime. But the thing about genres is, once a limit is established, interdictions are not far behind. The Mythos is always being added to and subverted.

Thanks for the advice here, I'm sure it will help.

Just read the first two posts of Breaker and my thoughts can be summed up as follows: O.o

EDIT: Just finished and I will not be going far enough as to say that Slendy is possible to kill. I like him untouchable. Also, I think the background of that blog has damaged my eyes...
