Phone number
I called the number and this is what I found.

I called the number on their website, 207-330-6677. This is what I heard:

"you have reached snow town library voice mail we're happy to hear from you. If you were calling to inquire about upcoming events visit our website http://snowtownlibrary.org. if you have any questions or book requests you may leave a brief message after the beep and someone will respond to your query as soon as possible and thank you for calling the snowtown library. A book must be an ice ax to break the seas frozen in our soul. Thank you from ____ and thank you for calling the snowtown library *beep*"

Ok, so I couldn't tell what they said at the ___ part and brief is bold because the voice put emphasis on it. This is very close to the exact message but pardon me if something is wrong. I called them at least six times to do this. I'm going to look up the "A book must be an ice ax to break the seas frozen in our soul" quote, it seems odd that they just threw it in there.

EDIT: I looked it up and found that "A book must be an ice ax to break the seas frozen in our soul" is a quote from a german writer. His name is Franz Kafka, here are some of his quotes http://thinkexist.com/quotes/franz_kafka/

The blank part was "Thank you, Franz Kafka" - it was the attribution for the quote.

What I think

Brief introduction:

I am Whitellama, the twin brother of Blackllama79, and we really are twins, that's why we've got corresponding names. This is both of our first ARGs, and I discovered ARGing after reading Little Brother which mentions ARGing in it. I'm just saying this to let moderators/administrators know that we are not one of those weird people that talk to ourselves.

I've been doing some research on the Howl page as that seems where we've ended up, despite the fact that information on that page was posted beforehand. I just wanted to post about a few things we might want to consider:

Underneath the poem it says that it was written by Louise Hoskins, the woman that served as head librarian in between 1889 - 1911. She was also Ruthie's aunt. This poem was written in 1911, the year she retired or... when something happened to her. Did anybody else notice that the day the person who wrote this message heard the bells ring three times was exactly 100 years and 3 days after the poem was written? I think that means something.

Another fact to pay attention to is that the poem was also written exactly 100 years after the library was established in 1811 in February.

If you noticed, up there I said "the person who wrote this message" as I'm not entirely sure who wrote message after Howl. This may be because I'm confused and it may be rather obvious, or this may be another mystery to uncover. Because this person states that they volunteer annually to clean out the vault in august, I am assuming that they are not a librarian working there as they used the word "volunteer".

I was about to make some suggestions as to who wrote that message but then I realized that this message was on the Snow Town Library website so that it must have been an administrator or someone with access to the website that uploaded it. Now I really am confused.

And also, I just wanted to point out that in the email enaxor received (and thanks for doing that enaxor), the emailer suggested that we should befriend Ruthie and collect information about Louise posing as a resident of the town. If anyone's up for the task to send Ruthie an email, feel free. Otherwise, I may do so myself.

And also enaxor, I have a quick off topic question. As I'm always trying to learn something new, I am curious about the deciphering of this code you did. So the code itself was the card numbers right? And I googled phone pad ciphering but the only thing that came up was a one pad cipher. These are the same things right? It looked a little tricky to decipher so if there's some special trick to it I'd like to know.

whitellama: the phone pad codes enaxor is referring to involves writing down the numbers as if you were sending a text message. 7 would be either PQRS, 5 would be JKL, 3 would be DEF, etc.

With some lucky guessing / familiarity with the keypad letters, you get the message she generated.

Hi whitellama,

I sent Ruthie an email earlier this evening introducing myself as a new residenr/keen reader interested in joining the book club. Am yet to hear a response. Also, after reading the howl page, I sent another asking if they had a copy of lady of the lake, but am waiting for a response to this too.

As for the cypher, I realise I wasn't the person who posted, but a game I kinda played a few years ago had a code using a phone keypad. The numbers on the late notices don't have any 1s or 0s, and the third contained an apostrophe. The keypad on a mobile phone usually has 1 as punctuation, and 0 as a space. Ignoring the apostrophe (just a clue to the fact the numbers represent words), If you imagine pressing the member numbers into a phone with predictive text, the phone would come out with the message enaxor posted under the spoiler cover.

Hope that makes sense.

Yeah, I agree the dates are somehow significant, not sure how yet. Also, the howl message dates (from memory, the 2nd Feb, and one week later, and finally 13/2 line up roughly with the dates in peg's blog about her husband's funny turn. Doubt he wrote the howl message though, as he took peg to a motel Valentine's weekend, and the way peg talks about "the library click" seems to preclude her husband being part of it.

EDIT: sorry notgordian, didn't see you'd beaten me to it!

To all three of you, welcome to unFiction! Glad to have you aboard. Very Happy And thanks to notgordian *eta and Octafish for explaining how I used the phone keypad to decode the message.

Email

Haha, I just came back to read your post after I too sent an email to Ruthie. I mostly talked about how great the library is and I told her I was a history fanatic, hoping she'd give me more info on how the library got started, and tell me more about her Aunt. So now we can both post feedback on our emails.

And yeah, I think there's something quite important about 3s in this ARG. There were three bells ringing, and 3 days after the 100 year mark is when they heard the bells.

Edit:

And thanks for the welcome enaxor.

Thanks enaxor, good to be here!
Been doing some more snooping, and this may or may not be anything, but in peg's blog, The latest entry with Fred's snowman. Does anyone else see something odd about the right hand snowman? Looks like it has a real person's head.

Maybe I'm barking mad, but it could be significant. Working from my phone at the moment, so can't find out if it's Steg.....while I think of it, anyone know a good steganography program for mac?

Yup, TY, Enaxor. You're like the Jessica Fletcher of Snow Town. Being lazy I whack in phone keypad ciphers here:

Hi all!

@Octo. that's a good point, the whole thing is odd to me. i want to know if there is anything with the lake photo as well. she said the one with the post currently is much better than the one she originally posted.

the other odd things are the comments about "on the 8's" in the weather posts and the the picture of the two ladies from the library itself. and when has there ever been a waiting list for a book club?

this week they are reading lord of the flies and are devouring it *eewww*

:edit: oh @whitellama. to back up this theory, its 1811, 1911, 2011. So every century somethings afoot in this sleepy little town Smile

:edit pt deux: ok . call me crazy, but i swear something is layered with the snowman picture. can some one plz look at it, i dont have any software to make it go neg or anything!

On the 8s

I'm not sure about the On the 8s thing. I didn't notice it until recently but I searched it, and found that it was this:

Quote:
Local On the 8s describes the times during the hour when we display the Local Forecast programming segment. It appears every ten minutes, at :08 minutes after the hour; :18; :28; :38; :48 and :58 minutes after the hour.

Edit:

I was also reading through snowtown.me and I found a post that directly relates to the bells. http://www.snowtown.me/?p=75

Because Peg didn't know about the bells I guess that crosses her off the list of whoever it is that originally found the spiral of dots and contacted us.

The following post contains further theories from Peg about the full moon and the bells as well.

Charles Gulliffer Howl

My thought is that the Howl message might be from Charles Gulliffer because he's the one on the Library Guestbook who asks about doing the vault inventory.

I've emailed privatesnowtown asking if this is he, and telling him that he's not alone - that Fred and Ruthie also hear the bells.

Many thanks to all posting the phone message, library late notice slips, and puzzles Smile

Library book club

I also noticed that the weekly bookclub - that is so popular it has a long waiting list - is cancelled on the 18th & 25th of March. There must be something significant about these dates, but I don't know what.

I have posted on the guestbook asking about this, but my comment is under moderation at the moment, and haven't got a response from Ruthie.
