Exactly, I mean I get that a lot of people are smarter than me, I'm only 14, but still it's not possible.

Sorry, but I don't believe it.

And just because there are some who are stupidly blatant about their cheating, and submit solutions in seconds, doesn't mean that others, who may be putting in some "tactical waiting periods", are any less of a cheater.

Well you do not have to believe it if you do not want to, but that is how I got it in 3 mins. If you look at every second animal set you will notice that the letter (red underline) is one of the first couple spaces, so it is alot quicker to get those then the other ones. That is how I did it.

I have no trouble believing an honest solution in three minutes. In about 20 seconds, I figured the general idea of how to solve. Unfortunately, I made a couple of wrong choices for the filler words. (To make matters worse, the wrong letters in the appropriate spaces made a word I was sure was part of the solution, so I wasted 20+ minutes trying to make it fit.) I started fresh, and using the right words, solved it a couple minutes later.

Had I not taken those missteps, I figure I would've gotten well within the 10 minute zone. And I have no illusions that I'm the cleverest solver on this site. I know there are folks here that have faster processing speeds (both in their hardware and their meatware) than I do, enabling them to beat the 5-minute mark.

And this puzzle
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
is completely guessable from the last paragraph, the theme, the easily deducible number of letters in the solution and a little luck.

Three minutes? Sure, I buy it.
But five seconds?! No bloody way. I'd almost bet someone truly earned his Hacker Seal. Either that or someone has inside information.

Yeah, I think there have been cheaters from the beginning. I solved this one pretty quick, I just guessed after I had the first two letters; but looking it up takes time in the first place, it's not possible in a few seconds. Makes "Theorem Champ" basically impossible to get fairly.

Seal Browser!!

I have been working on the Seal Browser Seal for a LONG time and have not been able to solve it. I got the "trick" right away and got the message. But, for the life of me, I have no idea what to type in as the answer. I've tried a LOT of answers.

Any hints for how the message relates to the answer?

Thanks in advance!

If you have the answer, then all you have to do is enter it

Seeing all this talk of cheating... I don't feel so bad about having forgotten about the site for several hours after the puzzle went live.

I've always chalked the uber-fast times up to groups of folks in an IRC channel all collaborating/sharing the work.

Heres the Email Response I got from my Inquiry.

Hi ******, glad to see you are enjoying TMT. Despite that it may seem superhuman to solve a Theorem in 5 seconds, I assure you that there is no cheating going on and that some Members really are that good. It may be easier to understand the quick solve times if you take into account the super time-efficient methods some Members use to solve the Theorems. For example, based on the topic of the Theorem sent in the email beforehand, some Members may already have in mind 20 or so potential answers that they think M might use. Then upon seeing the Theorem (especially those that use blank spaces to show how many letters are in the solution), they may be able to make an educated guess at the solution, and very occasionally they just happen to be right.

Here is how kslice explained her recent 10 second solve time:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I took zoology this past semester and automatically knew the first two answers were Testudines & Primates off the top of my head. I took into account the number of letters the solved answer had to be, accounted for the fact that the answer should also be a compound word, and came up with dragonfly. This theorem was just simply easier than a few of the other ones for me. (It was also a bit of shabby guesswork! I could have been. wrong on the dragonfly hunch! Luckily, I wasn't).

Hope this settles your qualms!

This is today,
N

Yeah, sure...

If he seriously believes that, I know who I'm gonna sell a bridge to.

OK, Ms K., let me get this straight... In the span of 10 seconds, you displayed the new puzzle, viewed it,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
picked up on the 'animals named after other animals' theme, assessed the number of letters in the solution, immediately determined that M was looking for orders (not families, classes, genera, species or common names), recalled the order turtles belong to, determined the sixth letter of Testudines is 'D', deduced the 'R' from Primates, thought of 'dragonfly',
typed it in, and hit enter. In 10 seconds.

I've said before I know there are solvers here more talented than I, but come on. 10 seconds? I'd find it easier to swallow a spoonful of ground cinnamon than this story.

By the way, Riveran, while this situation probably bugs you as much as it does me, you still might want to hide Ms. K's story behind a spoiler block.

fast solvers

I was the first solver for the "Old MacDonald" theorem (under 1 minute). It was a guess for me, but a fairly reasonable/obvious one based on the clues in the blog post. Given how the membership has greatly increased, I find it completely plausible that other people are able to guess answers to theorems in under 1 minute, even if they aren't as obvious as the "Old MacDonald" one.

It's also worth noting that not all theorems have super-fast solvers (e.g., "Who in the Where with the What".) I find kslice's story quite plausible even with a sub-10 second time. It shouldn't take more than 1 second to type the answer, and "dragonfly" is easy to guess with the first 2 letters. Also, no one else solved it in under a minute.

Automaton

There's a new seal called Automaton.
No idea where to start yet. I tried few tricks that didn't work when i was poking around for hacker seal - still don't work. Only 5 people have gotten it so far. Hmm.
