Ok, solved it via brute force. Though even now knowing which rule it is, I still do not see how the problem had hinted at it. Is this meant to be solved brute force?

Unless "'em" was the hint... that is so.......... inelegant >_<

After reading the solution can you provide a hint to point the rest of us in the right direction?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As in the previous spoilers... "em" is the hint at which one rule to look at. And it's among the first 25. And it's easy (though inelegant), don't over-think.

Is the solution

in rule 16? My thought is 1 em is 16 pixels.... If so, I'm just not seeing it.

Due to the nature of the automata, there's actually a lot of rules that produce identical results; compare 222 and 254 for an example.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If I'm reckoning correctly, there are actually eight different rules that all produce the answer. And while there is one in the first 25 that works, the intro hint is pointing to a later one. (Not very much later, though.)

The value of em depends on the point size. So it can be *anything*...

Ahhh!!! Your interpretation is most likely to be right.
(That was my first guess too, though I didn't look closely enough... then when I saw the hint of

I am lost on this puzzle. It's a lot like the recursion one. I'm looking at the hints and the puzzle and after a while it feels as if I'm lost in the sunday crossword. Is the answer a cipher? Does it just jump out at you plain as day?

I have cycled multiple times through the first 25 and see no way it could relate to "em".

I feel like I'm losing IQ points on this one.

Re: automaton
TMT

Some of the Automaton rules result in identical patterns. I know of two of them that revealed the solution in a fairly clear manner, but the intended solution rule mapped very nicely to a clue in the introductory text.

However neither of the rules I discovered fit within the subset that I have seen offered up in prior emails as containing the solution. Maybe I missed another occurrence of the solution in that particular range, but for those of you who are frustratedly limiting yourselves to that subset, rest assured that the answer does exist outside of that range.

And remember - M is trying to tell you which rule to pick. You just have to try to love solutions as much as he does.

the death of subtlety

Projectyl -

First of all, you may have missed the point of my satirizing M's apologia in regard to the matter of the legitimacy of instantaneous solving.

Secondly, I don't doubt that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
flag semaphore/analog clock conversion
is relatively well-known among experienced solvers; if that's the case, though, doesn't that make this particular puzzle seem rather formulaic and uninspired? Then it's almost like he dares you to break into his house (mind you one that lacks a moat, deadbolt, dobermann, Kevin McCallister, what have you), then gives you a few ideas about where his spare key is located in the yard. [/spoiler]

They're all like that. The hints are what he does.

I take back my comments about fast solving on "Murder at Sea". If I was as clever as I wish I was, I would've had the key needed to solve it at hand, since M sneaked the puzzle title in his emails, providing a significant hint to it. Especially since just a few weeks ago I thought it might be wise to have that very key handy on my crib notes. As I'm sure the fastest solvers did this week. And I didn't. >sigh<

However, the 10 second "Strange Amalgams" solution still smells fishy to me. Possible, but fishy.

Moving on.

Given that I've been to several Microsoft and MIT puzzle hunts by now and even wrote some puzzles of my own, yes it's rather uninspired, but I'm sure it can still be very fun for the newcomers... Not to mention he's putting these out at the rate of one a week. The more creative and original puzzles are much harder to come by. *wistful sigh...

If we have the right rule, will it be readily apparent? I feel as if I may have the right rule but I can't get any further (which means I may not have the right rule).
