bloody Automaton

I'm currently looking at
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
all the single letters in Rule 169 because it's M^M
but I'm sure there has to be something that makes more sense. More hints, guys, please?

I, too, thought EM referred to M, the 13th letter.

It doesn't.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
169 is M^2, not M^M. A different operation on M and 2 will actually yield one of the soluble rules.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Each rule has a number. As someone earlier noted, there are 8 rules that produce the solution. Half of the "magic 8" numbers, as it turns out, have only 2 factors.

My guess at the interpretation of em...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Em_%28typography%29
2. 'em --> them so perhaps it may have something to do with the two letters that were omitted

Any close?

"Em" has nothing to do with the solution. Not sure how that got started.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Focus on the entire last sentence, not just the last word.

Automaton

I've been lurking this forum since early Thursday morning... Even after reading each and every hint posted about Automaton, I'm still missing something.

It's been said that once the right rule is found, the answer will be obvious. Can anyone expand on that a bit more?

I disagree. EM certainly has something to do with the solution.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Several rules will produce an EM; only a subset of all of those rules matter.

 Automaton
I cannot see it!

I've been working on this since it was posted and I am at a total loss. I know I am overthinking it, but can someone give us another hint other then it's in the first 25 rules? I don't even know what I'm looking for anymore.

I'm guilty of starting it, because
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
for the solution in the first 25, if you look at "em" as two letters...

This hint actually significantly limits the number of rules you need to look at.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
After all, there are only 4 equivalent rule groups that have 8 members, and only 2 of these contain a member in the top 25.

Automaton
Automaton

So once we know the correct rule,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
does the answer depend on the shape created (which is a well known pattern), the letters in the black boxes, or something else?

Automaton
TMT

There are two issues to be addressed when solving the Automaton puzzle - which rule set to use and how to interpret its results. I will post a few spoilers addressing each. Reading all of them should point you in the right direction, so you might not want to read them all at once before going back and trying it again on your own.

First spoiler - what is the clue in the introduction?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"I love letters -- every single one of 'em... "

Second spoiler - how I did not interpret the clue.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I completely ignored the word 'em. I read the sentence as "I love letters - every single one of them." In my interpretation I did not need to convert 'em to the letter M or some mathematical combination of the letters E and M.

Third spoiler - a strong clue to how to interpret the clue and find the right rule set.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If I said "I love the days of the week - every single one of them" and you had to come up with a single integer based on that sentence - what number would you pick? Now use that logic on the clue sentence.

Fourth spoiler - clues on how to interpret the rule set results

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You only need to look at one rule set - you don't have to combine values from multiple rule sets.

You will only need to look at one set of colored boxes (either black or white - I won't say which here.)

You won't need to use all the letters in the rule set results - just enough in sequence to present a clearly logical word or phrase - after that it repeats itself.

Once you've found the right rule set and concentrated on the right subset of letters, the answer should present itself. I hope this helps some folks get unstuck.

Yep this cleared up a lot. I had the right rule the first time but had a hard time seeing the answer. Thanks

Damnit. I feel stupid now. It was the first rule I looked at because I thought I saw a word, but I couldn't make sense of the rest of the letters... its just like the puzzly theorem..... bit of overthinking.... but I think one hint that was given before is misleading:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
if rule 0 counts as a rule, the result is within the first 26 rules, not 25

shape is irreliant. Your on to something with the rest of your theory
