Dishwasher

I sent in this answer

Quote:

There were several attempts at creating a dishwasher for the sole purpose of washing dishes but they all had fatal flaws. The design that modern dishwashers come from was invented by Josephine Cochrane. Her reason for inventing her dish washing machine wasn't to make washing dishes easier but simply that she was fed up with her servants chipping her fine china.

Hopefully this will be interesting enough.

Now we're doing great at 15 points. Here's the newest post:

Two interesting answers, two correct answers, adding 4 to your total - meaning you now sit pretty on 15 points!

So, your second to last question:

Who was given a key to the city of Detroit in 1980?

Yours,

The Enigmatic Writer.

answer to question 4 has been sent - getting close to the end of QI now, let's hope the points earned will help us in the next task.

And the new post that goes with it.
Quote:
Well then, another right, and quite interesting, answer, meaning you now have 17 points. At this rate I may just have to draw you a map.

The correct answer was, of course:

' Saddam Hussein after he donated about $250,000 to the Chaldean Sacred Heart church. That poor judgement was only partially tempered by Detroit's mayor Dave Bing when he recently presented Elmo (of Sesame Street fame) a key during a visit to the Children's Hospital. But perhaps Miami commissioner Tomas Regalado showed equally poor judgement when he gave that city's key to rapper and admitted drug-dealer Pitbull. Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas Dwaine Caraway gave a key to the city to Mike Vick, which, I suppose, is not as surprising, given that Dallas has quite a problem with stray dogs.'

So, for my fifth question:

What was Jonathan Swift's contribution to science?

Your almost there - let's see if you can make this a clean sweep.

Yours,

The Enigmatic Writer.

Well I hope we get a map. That would make things so much easier.

Edit 1: Sent in an answer for Question 5. Let's hope that answer gives us that clean sweep.

Edit 2: Not what he's looking for, but I still get the point for an interesting answer.
Quote:
An interesting answer, so you get a point, but not the one i'm looking for.
You will be allowed more time to try and find the one i'm looking for - though I feel I may have found one that finally stumps you to...cosmic proportions.
Yours,
The Enigmatic Writer.

If you can dredge up anything mycroft i'll send it in.

my answer - and reply from TEW - for q5

Quote:
most of swift's contributions to science could be said to be in the IT area. in his most famous work, Gulliver's Travels, Swift created the idea for a basic sentence generator, or knowledge engine, which could be used to randomly create combinations of words which were then checked for meaning. altho Swift meant this as a joke on the wastefulness of science without practical direction, the idea has been seen as a pre-cursor to computers.

in the same novel, Swift talks about big and little-enders (the inhabitants of a land divided by the age old question of which end of an egg should be opened to eat it). that name was later adopted by computer science as a description of how information is ordered in bytes - with either the largest or smallest first.

and with such a major input to the field of computer science it would be easy to jump to the quite interesting, but incorrect, assumption that search engine giant Yahoo! was named after the creatures from Swift's novel - altho in fact the company formed in 1995 would be keen not to have their customers associated with the "vile and savage creatures, filthy and with unpleasant habits" which Swift described.

Quote:
Ah, so close! While an interesting answer - one you will get the point for - it isn't the one i'm looking for.

In good grace I shall allow you more time to try and send me the correct one.

And remember - keep it interesting!

We need to look for something in the cosmic. He do anything in the space area?
You learn something new every day.
Quote:
In Gulliver's Travels Jonathan Swift described the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, giving their exact size and speeds of rotation. He did this more than 100 years before either moon was discovered.

I just stumbled onto that by accident.
Yay to weird science facts!
Edit 1: We have a winner!
Quote:
We have a winner!

After all of this, you managed to gain a grand total of 20 points, which of course means I need to reward you with 20 nudges. And so:

5 of these will be a map, which will be posted in due time,
7 will be pieces of information and advice which you would do well to remember,
3 will be me ensuring Kezia's safety for a little while longer,
And for the final 5...Ah, I know just the thing. One of you will have the oppurtunity to question me directly. Although, of course, it won't be that straight forward. After all, I wouldn't be an enigma if I were, would I?

Your pieces of information and/or advice:

1) Your golden rule: Trust noone.
2) Your silver rule: Question everything.
3) Now is not the time for Kezia's envelope to be opened - though that will be short at hand.
4) Beware the name Coheed Thanatos - he is both Kezia's and your own greatest threat.
5) Everything has a consequence, no matter the different ways it can end - all paths lead to trouble.
6) Almost everything has significance.
7) Kezia's mother was blind.

Until the next time.

Yours,

The Enigmatic Writer.

So that letter can't be anything written if her mother was blind.

Letter

She could have had someone write it for her which would imply that someone else knows or knew what the letter says.

Is it too late to join in? If nothing else I'm finding the use of bands as names very amusing.

I am SO in on this. All I can think about while reading this is protest the hero. They have a song named The Divine Suicide of K., album called Kezia and in the song Turn Soonest to the Sea it has the lyrics "Divinity is not physical, and your flesh means more than you." Have not yet read up on everything in here, was so excited that this may be linked. Also the Sisters name "Cambria" could probably be a reference to the band Coheed and Cambria, a band that protest has played with before and will be in the future.

Edit: . . . They have a new cd coming out on the 22nd, coincidence?... also I did not get to the post above me before I posted, sorry

Sorry for all the edits but I haven't read everything and I am just way too excited . . in the video blindfolds aside, there is a firing squad waiting to shoot the band throughout the entire video . . another link? It is also the last song before Part 3:Kezia on the cd . . . I am so glad I stumbled upon this. Protest has recorded CD's in my hometown of Hamilton and I have been to a club with Rody . . I can't wait to see how this unfolds!!

Map is now up, and the rest of the post:
Quote:

With regards to this Q&A session I promised - only one of you will have the oppurtunity to extract information from me. I say extract information as, once again, it won't be as straight forward as asking questions - quite the opposite infact. You will have to gather your information without asking one - the minute you ask something remotely close to a question, the session is over.

Pick one of your number, and we shall arrange a time when we can chat.

Yours,

The Enigmatic Writer.

I can do it if you guys wish. My next pick would be you Mycroft.

i was going to nominate you cherrytree Smile happy for you to 'interrogate' our enigma, just so long as you don't ask any questions...like why half his map appears to be from WoW?

if anyone else wants to be considered for it shout up - but i'd say if there's no takers by the morning then you should make contact cherrytree.

Didn't see that. Though I don't play WoW so I wouldn't know. It's not too hard to phrase questions as statements.
I keep thinking that our friend is the Guardian sent by the Creators. Either that or a Brother or Sister at the temple. I mean who else could insure her safety.

Edit 1: Emailed Sister the map. Made a little interesting discovery.
Her response:
Quote:
My dear child,

You managed to complete his games within the hour? You must be some remarkable people. And her being at the Temple of the Creators...that's a good 3 days travel from here at the very least. An extremely difficult and dangerous journey too. It is unlikely, but unlikely seems to be more like likely with what has been going on recently. I shall send word to a friend of mine that resides there, and see if they know anything.

May the Creators watch over you always,

Sister Cambria.

My response:
Quote:
Do you mean you're world has only progressed an hour? 4 days have passed for us since finishing the game.

Her response:
Quote:
My dear child,

Yes. Only one hour has passed. I don't think time differences would be that large, do you?

May the Creators watch over you always,
Sister Cambria.

My response:
Quote:
Well it appears that it is. Which is strange upon itself. But I guess it can happen. If that's the case then I guess that's all the better for us to communicate. It gives us a larger span of time to speak without to much time passing.

Her response:
Quote:
My dear child,

I still have my doubts about it. It all still seems...unusual.

May the Creators watch over you always,

Sister Cambria.

My response:
Quote:
You're telling me. It's not like an everday occurence that I speak to someone from another world. Also it's quite unsettling to see our different religions. If anyone were to talk about your religion it would upheave ours. Christianity, Hindu, Baptist. It's as unsettling to me as it is to you, but we have a mutual interest do we not? You don't want people to die, and neither do I. As much as it is unsettling if there is the threat of human life I rather protect it than worry about the specifics.
I have a feeling our friend might be the Guardian mentioned in the story. Or someone high ranking. I mean how else could they protect Keiza.
One more thing.
(1) As a reward for earning enough points for the game i'll be conducting a Q&A Session with him. Maybe i'll be able to learn something.
Finally a question.
Did you know anything about Kezia's mother?

I'll try to keep track on my emails back and forth with you guys. You never know what may come up.

Response from our dear Writer.
Quote:
Quite easily. Set up a space where we can chat, and if they so wish, the others among you can see what it is we are chatting about. Later, we arrange a time that is suitable for us both - time zones taken into account, of course.

Yours,

The Enigmatic Writer.

Anyone have any problems with Skype or AIM. I fail with IRC, and don't know how to really use it.
