I didn't understand how XOR works, so if anyone can explain me ... Embarassed

You actually need to understand several things.. If any concept below is not familiar to you, stop at that line and follow the link AND do a google search for tutorials..

Characters in a computer are usually represented by ASCII, the de facto world-wide standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper and lower-case Latin letters. The capital letter A is 65.

65 is a number in a numbering system called decimal which we all love and use. However, computers deal with a different numbering system called Binary.. Which everyone knows is composed of zeros and ones. 65 decimal converted to binary is 1000001.

XOR is a binary bitwise operator. That means it has a left hand and a right hand operand--it takes to arguments and gives a result. When used with ones and zeros, this is the result table of XOR:

0 XOR 0 = 0
0 XOR 1 = 1
1 XOR 0 = 1
1 XOR 1 = 0

Now remember how we said that A = 01000001. We'll also take another letter Z which equals 01011010

Now we line them up and perform the XOR on each column

01000001
01011010
-----------
00011011

which equals 27 .. 27 in the Ascii Table is (the escape character) .. looks weird doesn't it? Now remember how weird all the characters looked in texel's messages? That's why XOR is reversable.. if we take 27 and XOR it with 65 (A) we get Z !! That's how we reversed texel's posts which used XOR as part of a cipher where each character is XORed by the previous one's result..

Why? If the spec was right that they were doing it to hide from AI, then...well, we know that Texel got in contact with AI man, who may or may not be the AI that they may or may not have been hiding from. *brain explodes*

Also (having put brain back together), can I suggest that Texel may be the girl in the pic with Jesse?

what i am really worried about is what is going to happen when that AI man gets more POWER!!!!!! shiver what will be his intention...asuming AIs have intention....ok programming (for intents and purposes) equals intention. who programmed him?

What leapt out at me was...

Quote:
by all rights, i should be dead, and all i can say is, how thankful am i that that thing was not meant for me? that is to say, i feel extremely sorry for whom that was meant - that was not just some ghosts, or dudes with boards out in a cornfield.

[spec] "meant"... is Texel saying that the whomps/paranormals are deliberate? A trap or attack against AI man, maybe? Could explain why he's so damaged... [/spec]

EDIT : Agh, read the Beth Metadex stuff.

Timing of texel's whomp experience and ... what file?

I'm a little baffled by the time and date stamps associated with Texel's recent experience, both in terms of the times and dates on paintover.net, and the filenames from texel.zip and texel2.zip.

Last night in IRC, Ehsan indicated that Movable Type (the software used to run paintover.net) has a 'draft mode' (which Caesar was using), which basically means (if I understood him properly) that posts are still recorded as to when they actually are made, but they can be delayed in posting until later. This would explain why the first batch of the Texel stuff marked as Nov. 8th didn't appear until much later ... and the filenames in texel.zip are consistent with the date and time stamps on paintover.net.

The same would go for the recent November 10th paintover.net posts, except for one inconsistency ... the file inside texel2.zip is named cc-texel-12-11-03-13-26-41.txt. If you go by the convention that made all the other files agree with their posting times, this one should have gone up at paintover.net at 1:26 PM on November 12th (or at least sometime after that). However, Texel's post seems to have occurred at 9:56 PM on November 10th. Baffling.

The other thing that is making my skull itch is Caesar's post:

Caesar wrote:
And, wow. Guys, take a look at that file.

I don't think he means texel2.zip. I can only imagine that Texel's portable picked something up as Root was present with her at the site of the whomp (just as Beth's PDA did when she met with Root):

Texel wrote:
btw, i find it very curious that not only did i escape relatively unscathed, but so did my portable. mostly. unfortunately, the power supply got totally fubared (battery chamber smashed up a bit, a/c jack bent in beyond repair), so i couldn't retrieve anything off it, or tell you guys anything until now. oh boy.

The question is: What file is Caesar talking about ... and where is it? The hackers have got to be sharing files somewhere else. I have this unpleasant feeling that the Oct. 1st image tells us where ...

Although I've been lurking for quite some time, and I think I'm fairly up to date on mostly everything, one of the many things that has been nagging at me is the 'location' of the various hackers (by which I mean in relation to each other).
I think that we are pretty much in agreement that it was Caesar and Random that Beth saw while she was on her little vacation, which indicates that they are fairly close to each other. We also seem to be in agreement that both Caesar and Random are male.
Now, assuming Texel is the girl in the CD picture, and that Jesse is Caesar, why are they not together? I don't know about the rest of you, but if someone I loved was injured I wouldn't express my joy that were safe and - forgive me - a-ok over a computer. Maybe it's just a hacker thing, but personally that would be something I would want to do in person.
I realise that the posts were made for our benefit so that we could follow the storyline, but still it does seem to somewhat jar with my understanding of the human psyche.
