But, none of the in-game characters appear to be bothered by that yet. Perhaps everything is so far-fetched already that they aren't thinking of the reasons HOW these things are happening, they are just still struck in amazement at the fact that these things ARE happening.

I think that's probably pretty much the case - it's obvious to us that it's all happening in the matrix, but hey - we've seen the movies Wink Seems to me that so far only texel and Beth have seen anything that gives clues to the fact that they're in a virtual world - Beth in her communications with "AI man" and texel at the most recent whomp. Everything else could be put down to just average, normal paranormal activity Very Happy

It'll be interesting to see if/when Beth makes the connection.

These monitors don't necessarily have to be agents IMHO. There are a lot of different types of programs in the Matrix, not just agents. Like in Reloaded where Rama Kandra and his wife are programs that do mundane things. The purpose of the agents are to kill members of the resistance (Morpheus, etc.). These monitors are probably programs that fix errors and bugs in the Matrix.

That is, if this is set in the Matrix, which I think it more than likely is.

Some rampant speculation. AI Man is either a rogue program, or is the AI made by Metacortex that escaped the Metacortex computers and is running rampant in the Matrix.

Let's say for a moment that these are actually "agents" as we know them in the Matrix movies. Why aren't they referred to as "agents"?

- It could be that the "strange man" knows them as Monitors. Perhaps programs within the matrix call them Monitors, but those that are unplugged do call them agents.

- Perhaps they are a special kind of program, like someone else here mentioned. Maybe the Monitors are a special kind of agent that hunts down rogue programs (like Strange Man seems to be).

- Perhaps they're not agents at all... maybe they're just little programs that try to maintain balance and kill chaos within the matrix.

- Perhaps they ARE agents, but the ARG is not sponsored by WB, so calling them such would take them too closely to copyright infringement of the Matrix movies. So, the PMs renamed them Monitors to stay out of trouble.

My thoughts on the agent thing:

The reason that the AI programs in Matrix were called Agents is because they look like Secret Service Agents (of course). However, it would take a human to make that association. A computer/AI would describe such a program based on its function, so the reason they are Monitors is probably because it is a computer describing them. (As you suggested in one of your thoughts, trip).

No matter what, I believe that what Texel saw was the same thing that Ryan Emerson saw. I like to subscribe to the "no Matrix references" outlook on this ARG, so I'll only say that whatever this "thing" is, it sure isn't human...

I figured they were called agents because they are computer programs. From the dictionary:

Code:
The part of the system that performs information preparation and exchange on behalf of a client or server.

But, I'm sure that word was chosen because it has many definitions, all which can apply to the mean guys in suits. Smile

Whoa, it was created in my home town, Mesa AZ. Oh how I miss that place, nice wheather (90-125deg yr round), such great drivers, and always nice people. But really, I do miss that place.

This might seem off-topic (probably is, and I couldn't really find an appropriate thread to post this in). I was thinking about earlier stuff in the game, and how much of it is still puzzles, and remembered the Latin text (Archive #28 on little-boxes). In the context of an AI man who couldn't find his English language generator, and presently communicates with Beth by uploading stuff onto her PDA, that text just seemed particularly weird to me... Could it be a result of something similar?
