Monsters and Proxies

Just wondering what people actually think of additional antagonists in Slender Man stories, as I've not seen much discussion of it.

I'll start by saying that I quite like the idea of both proxies and additional monsters being incorporated into the Slenderverse of a story, but only if it's done right. For example, I quite like the Rake in EMH as it fits in as a side-story type of monster and works well in that role (should note now that I'm not too big a fan of EMH, but I am mostly up to date on it), but I don't think that they could get away with it having a more prominent role.

If you do like the idea, where should other monsters fit in? I quite like the idea that Slender Man may have a rival or enemy monster, but that feels like evil fighting amongst itself as a good being fighting Slender Man kinda defies the point of him being this unknown power and removes some of the fear.

Sorry if this topic has been brought up before and I know it's in a similar vien of my other thread about going too far with the mythos.

I think it depends on how it's handled. EverymanHYBRID gives the sense of being an epic crossover of internet horror memes like Slenderman, Candle Cove, and the Rake, and it pulls that off very well. Now, if the Rake were to show up in Tribe Twelve or Marble Hornets it really wouldn't have the same smooth integration, I believe.

Proxies I have a distaste for because I really feel they're just stealing the limelight from Slenderman, but at the same time I know why they're always included and can't really fault the reasoning. So I guess I can tolerate them.

I think it's almost necessary to have NSAs (Non-Slender Antagonists) if a Slenderstory is to last very long. There's not that much to be done with just Slendy. The threat can only increase so many times before having to go to Slendy killing the protagonist(s). Then it's either over or you start again with a different protagonist. There's more flexibility with NSAs and they can provide additional threats while also possibly holding off Slendy. That way the protagonist(s) can live longer without the story losing tension.

I like the idea but hope they don't get overused. The Rake appearing in EMH has made me wonder if Slendy isn't protecting the cast from something else. Of course, I also look at the 'Leaked Videos' with interest as well since it seems the Rake appears there.

As for other's like Masky, and the Observer the could be agents of Slender Man or part of a cult that may worship him. I would like to see more of this explored in later episodes.

I like the idea. If Slenderman exists then why not others? And in MH case, I like how they went more into the effects of Slenderman on people. You can't wreak havoc and expect everyone to carry on as usual.

But, there is also the line between done and overdone. EMH has done a great job with incorporating others, like The Rake.

And then there's always the theory that we created them by thinking about them. If according to this theory, we could bring Slendy into the real world with our minds, then what are the limits to other horrors that could be pulled from the realms of the imaginary and into our reality?

I enjoy NSAs, if they're done right. Slender Man is scary, yes, but nothing on a screen can stay scary indefinitely.

All very interesting. The vibe I'm getting is "Positive, but only if handled right."

That's the way I feel too and I'm glad others feel the same.

Yeah, agreed with the general opinion. Other villains used right are great. c:

I think my biggest issue with other villains is when people go overboard with them. It's one of the reasons I stopped reading a lot of the blogs. When there's a ridiculous ARMY of proxies attacking your character, it stops being creepy and starts being ridiculous. 8I

I honestly don't like EMH's introduction of the Rake. It adds nothing to their story and doesn't even seem connected to the plot in any way. Confused It's just there, and note even like Slenderman, he's tied in with Corenthal so he has a reason.

All I know is that I heard of Slender Man because I was already obsessed with creepypasta. The Rake nearly made me pee every time I read it, and I heard of it before Slendy. That bit of nostalgia or whatever you'd call it is part of why I enjoy their use of the Rake, he's terrifying and vague and something I'd always wanted to learn more about than that initial block of text I'd read years ago.

Yeah, it all depends on how it's handled. Redlight was interesting when he first showed up, then he turned out to be a network rebelling against Slendy or some nonsense like that, and suddenly I was no longer reading a horror story. Actually, proxies in general have gotten to the point where they're no longer scary. Reach's blog in particular springs to mind.

As for non-human non Slendy antagonists, there's actually project being cooked up over at the TV Tropes forums based entirely around that concept. I'm participating in it (though I'll have the good grace not to link my blog*). So far, my favorites from the project have been Debasing the Beef Canoe, a Buffy review blog that morphs into something seriously disturbing, and brighter than a spoon, which seems to be a particularly odd Slenderblog up until a second entity called the Cold Boy shows up.

*(it's called Eccentrically Bored, btw, I'm not quite gracious enough not to advertise it Razz)
