[Trailhead] Ready for The Big Chill

Hi gang! I just got a black envelope in the mail which piqued my interest. I would scan and post it, but it turns out I don't completely need to (though I may a little later anyway). On the bottom of one side is an address:

http://www.facebook.com/ReadyforTheBigChill

On that page, the graphic to the side is nearly what was mailed to me:

Image link, as seen on fFacebook

You can go there and see stuff, but at the moment there is a video post by a girl named Magda Cerezales, and a link to her blog here:
http://www.magdamagma.com/

Magda has a fFb page of her own, and quite a lot of fFriends. Not sure who might be in game among her pals, just yet, probably most of them, at the moment, but it probably won't matter since a lot of people are probably going to be her best fFriends soon enough.

Magda links to a page by Tom Zambaux, a video editor and storyteller:
http://whichwayisnext.com/

Also, these people have twitter accounts.
http://twitter.com/bigchillalert
http://twitter.com/TomZambaux
http://twitter.com/MagdaMagma

Abut the game itself:
Based on context clues, "The Big Chill" is some sort of global climate change, possibly caused by volcanoes, or some other destructive catastrophe. It's not clear to me if we are talking about any specific "big Chill," or just a potential chill which would be rather chilly, indeed.

Darn! In the words of Elfquest, "Too many targets, not enough arrows." Too many interesting ARGs I can't play them all! Consider me passively following this if not an active player yet. Maybe I'll join later...

The character setup has a very "Lost Ring" feel... hope there's not too many story arcs to keep track of, or too little actual story to follow. Confused But we'll see! Good reason to hope for the best =)

THE PLOT THICKENS! (or starts, really...) Huaynaputina is supposed to be a dormant volcano, but there's actual activity there on the mountain. Noxious gases being emitted, enough to kill small animals in the area.

I think Tom and Magda are a couple. Not to be presumptuous, maybe they're just really great pals, but signs point to yes.

Also, Aaron is a very dry reader.

I do wish I knew some Spanish.

I'm sorry to keep replying to my own comments here ... but ... these are some really chatty people! And they are discussing what amounts to saving the world. This is perhaps one of the most produced games I've seen in a while that noone seems to be really interacting with very much. I kinda wonder why it's not getting much traffic, but probably it's because there's very little "call to action," other than that ominous notion of something bad happening somewhere. Thoughts? Anyone? Where do you think this is going?

I do enjoy meta analysis. You're spot-on with the "no call to action" observation. I felt driven at first to find every point of entry, just as I did with my very first ARG-like adventure ("Push, NV") and the obsessive list-making I did for it -- and just like then, I feel no compulsion to interact with the characters, but they still go on with their activities without me and I am happy to watch. Only in this case, I'm not bothering to watch. It's like having yet another book on my stack of books I keep meaning to read, but will never get around to it. (And I'll probably just wait for the movie version to be released later)

How do people get these envolopes and emails? I really like to get strated on ARGs, but I dont know how to put my name out there so I get sent these things...

Back on topic, I think its not a climate change related thing, but some kind of Lost-like expiriment were the people running "ready for the big chill" will put the people playingthrough a series of tests.

Or Im just put my ass. Whichever comes first

Just a little tiny stretch of truth I told, here. Magda and Fibriyani asked fFor some help and encouragement, so I have done this a day or two ago:

Quote:
Hello, Sahala Mindarwanto!

I'm a student at the State University of New York, and have come to
hear about some work at Kelud Volcano. I am currently taking a fairly
active interest in this, as it relates to a student project I am
putting together for my own studies here in New York. I am assembling
a project on the past and future of Kelud, you see, and while we know
the destructive power of Kelud in the past, Kelud's future is a matter
of some speculation. Through my assorted studies, I came to discover
that Fibriyani Tarigan, one of your researchers, may be in the midst
of a project to examine the volcano in its current state -- which is
quite a boon for me, academically speaking.

Please, Mr. Mindarwanto, I implore you as a dedicated graduate
student, is there anything you can do to encourage this project to
happen?

Cheers!
--Scott Myers
Grad Student, S.U.N.Y.

Today I got a reply:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Myers,

Thank you for your message.
I will look into it.
Dr. Fibriyani is very competent person: I know she knows what she does.
I will consider your riquest.

Dr. Sahala Mindarwanto
Director at Pusat Vulkanologi

Rabadash, good question. Give your address to anyone who asks, and take anything fFrom strangers. The world is a game. Playing pieces are everywhere. I once got a Rabbithole in the fForm of a business card fFrom someone who just happened to be walking down the same street I was. (That was Jinteki. It was pretty cool.)

So there I was, explaining to a coworker about the volcano thing, when the phone rings and I am suddenly shouting about earthquakes and tsunamis in japan. Coworkers thought I was pretty insane. This is not a game.

So, uh, I wonder if Big Chill will go on hold, or take this opportunity to unveil a greater cause of the game.

Q: will "Ready fFor the big Chill" go on hold after an actual global catastrophe?
A: No.

Three eruptions have begun. Kaboom! Tom has gone to Peru to be with Magda. Towns and villages are evacuating. The U.N. is concerned.

Are you ready...?

THE END!

YouTube: Link

Three Months later, Magda looks non-specifically at peace. With, you know, things. And isn't it great how she's gotten to know us all! Thank you in a very general way!

... I'm thinking this was maybe supposed to happen after 3 actual months. And then the actual catastrophe happened, maybe, and they decided to pull the plug early, maybe.
