Creating Distortion
Need a hand

Wondering if anyone could tell me how to create video tears and other distortion effects in After Effects. I've been toying with ways of creating trippy distortion, but wondering if anyone has methods they want to share?

He's doing a series specifically on Slenderdistortion.

There wouldn't happen to be anything for Sony Vegas, would there?

I've been working on my own video series , and I can say that the best program is Sony Vegas. I use Vegas 10, and to get the Slenderstortion seen in things like TribeTwelve and Marble Hornets, it's just doing a slightly animated TV Simulator -> Vertical sync.

Animating that just right gives you a perfect visual tear just like the others.

Oh sweet, thanks. Any tips on audio? And how about the slight visual tear at the bottom that MH is known for? where it kinda repeats the bottom, ya know? Do you know how to do that?

EDIT: And how do I make the video lag for a second or two. MH always does that as well. It seems simple, but I usually only use Vegas for throwing some clips together, not effects.

Not sure if there's a Vegas-specific answer for this (I moved to Final Cut a few years ago) but you can duplicate this effect using the same clip on two layers, moving one up slightly and moving the other down to fill in the transparent area left at the bottom.

As for the lag, make a still frame where you want it to lag, drag it out over top of the video where you want it to lag. The audio will still play, but the video will 'freeze'. You can also alternate stills of two consecutive frames to make it look like it's really 'stalling' (like a crappy VHS).

Oh wow thanks a ton, bro. It's so simple when you think about it. haha

You'll also notice occasionally (Entry 23 comes to mind) they do the visual tear, only the lower clip is something slightly different. Take two similar videos and edit them together that way for a very unsettling effect.

Depends on what you're looking for.

Anything really that would fit with a Slendy video. Maybe something unique?

Well to start with, I'd recommend adding audio distortion last. That way you can sync up your audio and video the way you want it, rip the audio off, and fuck with it in Audacity.

But it's all pretty much the same. For the ear rape, mess with the EQ. Static and white noise can be generated, and a combination of noise types with tones can give you an almost unlimited range of zero-content noise.

I'm still learning about this myself.

Definitely Audacity. It's pretty easy to get used to it and you can do A LOT with it. If you check out any of my videos, all of the different voices are done with a few modifications in Audacity.

But yeah, like the guy above me said, work with the video before toying with the audio.

Here's an admittedly shitty example of what you can do with Audacity. All the audio distortion was done after the video was completed, and I spliced it back together in AviDemux.

And believe me, this is low-quality. I don't know for a fact what the writers of the "big three" use, but I suppose that if I get the opportunity, I could ask.
