Actually, I agree with Phenom, sincerely (well, mostly sincerely... dude, a lisp? That's your rationale?). It's not that the mythos, or the fanbase (although, with the knee-jerk anger some posters jump to at the very mention of racial inequality, who can be sure about its individual subscribers) are somehow inherently racist, it's just unfortunate (and worth pointing out and acknowledging) that these stories are so homogeneous.

Part of the problem, if you'll allow me to riff for a second, is that (I would guess) the overwhelming majority of internet nerd culture are white, heterosexual, young men. I don't reaaaaally have any evidence to back that up, but even the Something Awful forums (where this phenomenon began) has a running gag about their core membership consisting of white dudes with neck beards wearing fedoras. If we operate under that assumption, which I think is fair, most people who are exposed to the Slenderman mythos are white dudes. And of these white dudes, a small percentage decide to make their own vlog or blog.

It would be incredibly refreshing to see a well-produced Slenderman vlog starring pretty much anybody else. C'est la vie.

Actually, I suppose there might be some racial aspect to the mythos. I was just thinking, Slenderman looks white... maybe that's along the same lines of the Agents, from the Matrix, he's white for the same reason he wears a suit, to look like an important, intimidating person.

I don't really have anywhere to go with this train of thought, but I think there could be something there.

Qaqa again. I don't think the stories are homogenous per se, I think that's unfair - the big 3 are all doing different things, and the people are very different. I don't think we can marginalize these people on the basis of color, gender or orientation. Looking at it from a great distance you might say the larger cultural makeup of the vlog mythos tends to be homogenous, but once you look a little closer the good series are anything but.

And again, I don't fault any of the creators for this. The only thing stopping a female, or African-American, or Latino or Asian or GLBT, etc. Slendyfan from taking their shot is themselves.

Well... they are *geographically* homogeneous. All of them take in the American East, and two take place in the southeast.
But that's less than nothing in terms of... anything, I suppose.

Yeah, again sorry about the lisp comment. I kinda had a thing against Jonclubs with the EMH hate vids he posted and it pretty much became a common joke around here.

(at qaqa)Also as I said before I'm Native American, our culture is pretty much based around nature and it would be pretty cool to see that tie-in with the Mythos.

Native American would be interesting. 8,D

And at least now the lisp thing makes sense, because that honestly did bother me too. OTL

Pretty much this. I'd love to see a good series with more diversity too!

(...maybe I should put on my big-girl spurs and start looking to recruit for my idea.)

Heh, thanks. Its nerve-wracking though, because my only two friends live several hours away from me and aren't easily available for anything except phone calls; and I don't know if anyone on my campus is a fan of the Mythos.

I assume you're talking about me. Yeah, I got annoyed, but I'm get irritated when people suggest things are racist when they're not. Of course it's not representative of the population...you have a very small sample size, and many minorities, in general, aren't as involved in Internet culture as others. I got the sense that he was like, blaming the vloggers for not including more minorities in the cast, which is ridiculous. There are real systematic reasons why minorities tend to live more in cities than in rural areas, why they may not be able to afford expensive equipment and props, why they may not have the time to do a large project as this, etc. I'm not like, denying that man. I'm fairly liberal when it comes to race issues.

I disagree with a lot of that, sje, but it's not worth arguing about. I also don't think Phenom was blaming anyone.

Bah. 8c
I'm with you on the not-having-Slenderman-Mytho-loving friends. xD;; I live in Missouri, and it seems no one here has ever heard of the internet, sometimes... 8U Except things like Rebecca Black. That caught on at my school this week. OTL;;
If I said I did not hear it all day Friday, I WOULD BE LYING SO HARD.

The friends I'm starting to work on my story with are mostly Asian. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm the only white person in the group. Also, props to you for having a girl as a main character (I don't know why, but I'm just guessing a girl is going to be the MC).

@BrochachoNacho, It's so lonely! No one understands why I show up at work electrified after a late night of new videos. No one understands why I have EMH wallpapers on my computer. ~No one understands~ /world's smallest violin

Out of all the things to catch on it had to be Rebecca Black? That sucks man, I'm sorry. D:

@AfterHours, I'm a lady myself as a matter of fact, so there would be at least one girl in the cast! Dunno if I would be the main character though. That would terribly pretentious, wouldn't it? :O I hope I can work with other ladies, and diverse ones, but at this point I'll take what I can get...

Slender Man in Texas...maybe we should give him a cowboy hat.
