 "Space Challenge"
We need to create a majority vote to "succeed".

EDIT: 8/4/10
... We never did come up with one single answer, and the whole "challenge" seems to have become moot (unless, it shows up later in the game).
I will leave the thread for old times sake, with hopes the answer to the challenge may be needed. END EDIT

Well, the "SPACE CHALLENGE!" is: "How many stars are on this page?"

First, if we are to send our answers to the P.O. Box, we need to come to an agreement of exactly how many stars are on the page.

The numbers so far:
17 - Literally the ones intentionally printed. The 8 white; the 8 black; + the one the challenge is referenced (which is also black).
117 - All the above plus the two flags (we know they each have 50 stars. We can actually count the ones on Coop's sleeve and, as space travel didn't exist in the U.S. when we only had 48 states, the flag on the ship must have 50).
139 - All the above plus the 22 stars from the RP Logo. My only problem with this is; can we be so sure that all the "stars" from the Logo are Stars? Might some of them be planets?
140 - All the above plus the word "Stars".
(I'm subtracting "Coop" from the list as we don't know for sure if he is a "star", and it makes little sense.)
118 - The above minus the RP Logo (but including the word "Stars").

Right, but it's definitely a U.S. flag. Therefor, 50 stars ...
If one flag is to be counted, then both flags would need to be included.

Lets see ... Not counting the flag(s) ...
18 - Including the word "stars", but dropping the flags and RP Logo.
40 - Dropped flags, includes RP Logo and word "Stars."
39 - No flags; no word.
67 - One flag w/stars and no word.
68 - One flag w/stars and word.

I think, before we send our answers to Coop, we should agree on a number.
A majority rule could possibly guarantee acceptance into the program. (Unless, of course, there's only one "correct" answer they are looking for.)

If you have a number that I did not mention, post it (and why) and I will update the list.

One other thing of concern. ...
The way in which the letter is worded: "Do you want to join the fight to protect outer space?"
Umm ... What would we be protecting outer space from? Earth? - Shouldn't we be protecting Earth from whatever it is that may be coming from outer space?
I don't know, but this makes me think Captain "Coop" Copper may be our nemesis. He's amassing a battalion of "kids" for an unknown battle!

This new "twist" reminds me of "ENDER'S GAME" by Orson Scott Card and "STARSHIP TROOPERS" by Robert A. Heinlein.
(I strongly suggest you read them both if you haven't)

I'm re-posting my scan of the letter, and I don't think we should rush into a response until we can come to a consensus of how we should proceed. After all, it took nearly three months for us to get a reply from "Coop!"

Dont think they want us to send our guesses in or they would have asked us to like they did in the newspaper .... I would think instead they want us to figure out a number which we will have to enter somewhere down the line and if correct, it will open up something for us..
This letter announces the beginning of an adventure starting now..Are y'all ready?

Please note that the stars aren't clearly visible on the flag located on the ship.

EDIT - The additional numbers have been re-posted to my original list.

I think, as the ad and letter are a throwback in time, and the Internet did not exist back then, our only recourse is to mail them our answers.

Should I add any of these numbers?

Yeah, but there's already a site to begin with...

I also think we're looking for some kind of pattern or something. The Super Speedfleet in the bottom right corner is suspicious and I think the last sentence in the letter is as well. It feels like they've worded it such that if we ARE ready to begin, we MUST party remember that "Real Spacemen Love Rocket Poppeteers!!!" for some reason.

I really think the simplest solution is the best here, and the correct answer is 16 stars (*maybe* 17). The whole rocket poppeteers campaign seems like something that (if it were real) would be geared towards little kids. Little kids who wouldn't be thinking about things like "Oh, don't forget to count ever star in the US flag on Coop's uniform in the background".

So, I think the 16 small stars are the only ones we need to count. Perhaps 17, because I can see how the big star might need to be included.

Either way, I think that if we ever have to use that, it'll be in a place where we can't get it "wrong". It'll probably be on a web page on the RP site -- "Put in your answer to the challenge here!" type thing. If we put in the wrong number, it'll just say "Oops! Wrong answer! Try again!"

There's nothing to indicate that we should mail the RP mailout back to them.

I would speculate that its the rp.com site that we will enter the answer as stated above. I think it would tell us to mail in if its what they wanted. But as always we shall wait and see.

Or just all the stars + Captain cooper

My dad, needlessly complicated man he is, suggests we should count the "white" stars as two stars, inner and outer.

I decided to go with thorough and counted the ones on the ship since it's obvious it's a flag so we're bound to know how many stars are on it...so I vote ALL stars, including space challenge...how many stars are on this page, count em all.

I still think it saying stars on page could be stars on the web page only. They question is right next to the logo of the web page and I think PAGE could be hinting to that.As to what it would lead to dunno.

Don't assume the Flag has 50 stars...

I wouldn't include the flag on the ship:

1. The stars are not clearly visible.
2. There weren't always 50 states represented on the American Flag.

Before Jan 3rd 1959, there were only 48 States.
Jan 3rd, 1959 - Alaska was added.
July 4th, 1960 - Hawaii was added.

USFlag.org site reference.

I'd think of this as an IQ Test, kind of like that annoying "How Many Triangles" you always see on Yahoo.com and other sites.

My number is 25
- counting the white stars as 2 stars
- counting the large star with the question
- not counting the stars in the Rocket Poppeteers logo from the website.

EDIT: Scratch that... Capt. Coop Cooper's flag on his shoulder has 50 stars... (self Trout) :/ Still counting just 25, though.

I'd say..90? I don't think we should count the ones we can't see.
