I love the snarky tone of the blog! I'm totally drawn in...

I noticed the quote on the main page, "Et in Arcadia ego", which famously appeared on the pastoral paintings of Poussin. It means "I was also in Arcadia" and was being read off the tomb by some shepherds in the middle of a meadow. The message is about death/beauty - the dead person was also once in the beautiful meadow. Could be interesting to keep in mind in terms of theme...

Also here are the characters I've got so far:

Thomas Pickman: Narrator, Painter, 22 years old, formerly suicidal, love horror genre

Dad: Pushed Thomas to live in windmill, also love horror genre

Doc: Therapist, She doesn't want Thomas to live alone.

Jessica: Ex-Girlfriend, dated Thomas for 3 years, broke up because couldn't provide.

And, of course... whoever left the note.

We have a new blog entry: painting.html. Nothing much of note other than we find out Pickman requires shots (insulin?) and he thought he spotted someone walking through the woods.

A link has also been added to the main page that will lead directly to the newest journal article, something that will come quite in handy, I'm sure.

"Arcadia" was also a poem by H.P. Lovecraft, though how/if it relates, I cannot say.

FYI: The painting noted by chelbelle, Poussin's "Les Bergers d'Arcadie", also figures prominently in the Rennes-le-Château mystery detailed at length in the book, Holy Blood Holy Grail, (by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln) and made famous by Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code.

If this theory is correct (apologies to Mr. to Michael Baigent, but I couldn't resist), then we can look forward to a rousing tale of a two thousand year-old conspiracy involving secret codes, cryptic messages, the Knights Templar, secret societies, some of history's most influential people, boundless treasure, and the "truth" about the crucifiction of Jesus of Nazereth.

Who wants to bet that a mysterious parchment/painting/sculpture will soon be found that contains a cryptic message that promises to reveal the location of an unimaginable treasure to those who can follow the enciphered clues?

Great fun!

Started following this yesterday. Very interesting and I like the possible Lovecraft connection. Any chance of seeing Thomas's had in the mouth of a dog? Laughing

I wonder if we'll see a Necronomicon before it's over, or some mention of Henry Fuseli for that matter.

I emailed him and just a email back! To provide some reason for my stalkerly email, I said I had written a thesis on Poussin.
Specifically, I asked about the quote, here is what he said:
Quote:
While I wouldn't say Poussin is my primary inspiration, I do admire his work a lot. The quote I used on my page is such a widely misunderstood one, but it really speaks to me. "Et in Arcadia Ego" "I, Death, am even in Paradise." Everything we see and touch has death, an end, lurking somewhere below the surface. I'd be interested in your thesis, by the way. I skipped college, so I probably know much too little real art history.

I'm glad you're enjoying my little dispatches as you called them. I think they'll continue a while.

He interprets it a bit differently that other interpretations I've seen. I like him Smile

Asked about insulin and got this reply:

Quote:
@JeztheNun Insulin? No, nothing quite that serious, but thank you for the concern. Glad you like the blog!

Here's a segment from the other thread, we have the actual links but maybe the locations are significant?

Quote:

Following me too. The twitter account seems so.. Not slendery. Which I enjoy.

If you click the head, you get contact info.
http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/contact.html

If you click the shoulder, you get the about me page: http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/about.html

The stomach gets the journal: http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/breakup.html

The elbow gets the 404, as does the right knee, the feet, and the pile of blood.
http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/x

Left knee gives you the twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/tpickman

Right leg opens Outlook.

Also, note he follows a ton of Slendery mishegas. Also, that first word does look like "Welcome" Doesn't looks like it says neighbourhood at all, though..

It's really to smudged to tell, but with some imagination:

"Welcome to the age of fear"

I see it too now. Oo, shuddery. Why would he lie and say neighborhood?

So, I shot Tom an email after his response on Twitter. Here's the exchange:

Quote:
Hi Thomas,

This is Jezebel, the girl who asked about insulin on Twitter. Your response actually has me a little worried. If not insulin, of what are you giving yourself shots? Do you have a medical issue? Are you using drugs? You can tell me and I promise I won't judge you. If you ever want to spill your guts to someone, feel free to email me any time. Keep in touch, and take care.

-Jez

Jez,

I apologize in advance if this comes off as brusque. Yes, I have a medical issue. I don't really wish to discuss it, as it is somewhat a sensitive matter with me. I am just getting used to posting my entries online; I shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place, and will likely avoid the subject in the future, barring some drastic change in my feelings.

I appreciate your concern, but I hope you will respect my wishes and drop the matter. I promise it is nothing you need to be worried about.

Tom

Tom,

Consider it dropped. Sorry for prying. I know it's really none of my business, and I shouldn't have asked in the first place.

I hope everything else is going all right over at the windmill. Seems an odd place, what with all of the incidents since you moved in. Particularly that note and the figure in the woods, but not discounting the bird. Do you tend to attract strange happenings?

Be safe out there!

-Jez
