Help me crack a cypher

Hi Everyone, I recently got married and received a puzzle in one of the cards. it was a simple substitution cipher and I cracked it in 5 minutes. the answer gave me an email address I was to start corresponding with. I received a second cipher and cannot crack it.

I believe it leads to my wedding gift and I would really appreciate any help. I've tried caesar shift ciphers, venegire ciphers and so on to no avail. Here are the two emails. PLEASE HELP

Thank God you cracked the code.

We had to make it easy enough for you to figure out without revealing who we are, the enemy is everywhere.

Now that we have established contact we will have to switch the code to harder and more random ones. Some missions will have to be completed.

This is going to be long and arduous but people have lost their lives to bring the package to us. Do not let them down, the relmksdafl

They found me! I'll send more info later.

This was then the next email sent

The key is something you do for a living.

For a living, I am a salesman. I sell janitorial supplies like garbage bags and toilet paper. Some people joke around and call them "Shit tickets"

I really need some help here.

Oh, I ran it through a frequency table, and the letter frequency seems to match that of the English language - like its a 94 char anagram or something

I count 98, but your analysis seems sound.
In which case...
Good luck! Unless there's a regular pattern/key for the reordering, that should be nigh impossible to figure out. Doesn't appear to be a simple columnar transposition. Forward or backward.

ya, 98 - my bad.

I noticed that there were no numbers mixed in the cipher so I guess it isn't a tricky conversion from base-26 numbers to some other base.

Also can't be an MD5 hash.

The author of the cipher is an English major (from my deductions of which friend could have done this).

In the first email he says
Quote:
the relmksdafl
which makes me wonder if that is the key somehow, but I don't know what to make of it.

I ran the ciphertext through each of the ciphers solvers at http://www.cryptool-online.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=47&Itemid=29&lang=en using sales, and salesman as the key where ever it was possible to use a key - nothing

The "key" can be cryptogrammed into "custodians". (Provided you 'do' custodians Wink )

Or... about 100 other words.

hey, i solved it! (and i'm still at work, ha!)

The stuff in spoiler blocks will look much better if you paste it into a notepad and change to a monospaced font. If i used the CODE tag here, the spoiler bars won't cover them up.

step 1:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Note the length is divisible by 14, and (almost) every 14th letter is an X, so I'm removing them:

AORWMOERGSDHGXNAOIMMERSNEREXGTULEEIFSTCDAXTNEIARYSNEEEAXCUSSTIEOTMTWGMRIALETVIIUOTTXOLYTHLCUAEHORE
1234567890123.1234567890123.1234567890123.1234567890123.1234567890123.1234567890123.1234567890123.
AORWMOERGSDHG.NAOIMMERSNERE.GTULEEIFSTCDA.TNEIARYSNEEEA.CUSSTIEOTMTWGMRIALETVIIUOTT.OLYTHLCUAEHORE

step 2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Then break up the long string into sets at every 14th character:

AORWMOERGSDHG.
NAOIMMERSNERE.
GTULEEIFSTCDA.
TNEIARYSNEEEA.
CUSSTIEOTMTWGM
RIALETVIIUOTT.
OLYTHLCUAEHORE

step 3:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Then rearrange the rows until they start to make sense reading down:

CUSSTIEOTMTWGM
OLYTHLCUAEHORE
NAOIMMERSNERE.
GTULEEIFSTCDA.
RIALETVIIUOTT.
AORWMOERGSDHG.
TNEIARYSNEEEA.

step 4: I'm not transcribing the full solution here, but you should be able to finish it.

Good work, catherwood! I wondered about all the "X"s and even got them all in the last row of the transpose. Didn't even think of reordering the rows.

Thanks for all the help so far. I just received the next cipher

y25u9*hyx*7kp*foro-b*7q*y3sow2pq*0wv4umoy*7kt-*3o0sb*5g3*0s*v7q6*wt*98w*ms7*41k2*21hj

any suggestions where to even start?

I have not had any luck with this one. My first instinct was to convert it all into ASCII and look at the binary as blocks of bits. The asterisks could be word-delimiters, just to make it look more fancy than using blank spaces. Other than that, I'm stumped. Did you get any hints?

No hints with this one. It just arrived in my inbox with no subject, or salutation.

I'm pretty stumped too

Running thru a leet translator, and removing the non-letters makes it look like something solvable, but no luck for me Sad
