Cut her some slack, it's daunting having your screen filled with message boxes. From what I remember in trying to login to AIM on two different lab computers, once you log into the second computer, the first AIM that I logged into cuts me off. I think you can only have one person named bethlmcconnell on AIM at a time. That's a real person slogging through those messages boxes, folks.

Come on she must be expecting it! (Or the PMs are expecting it)

Nothing sweeter than a firm ascii....

Ahem....

Yeah, no way is she a bot... I mentioned Texas and she knew it was the place where everything is "larger than life." No waaaay is a bot that sophisticated...

Philip has yahoo messenger too! (let's find out)

Hello. I've been following this but had anything to say, so I kept quiet. When I found out that many of you were talking to Beth, looked for her and found her though yahoo messenger.
Damn, I had ANYTHING to say, so I just lost some time showing off how bad I am in first encounters Razz
But, maybe this is useful (maybe is just crap). So here you are:
Quote:

alicia_la_del_espejo: hello, beth! I'm @ your mailing list and just wanted to say hello
alicia_la_del_espejo: so... hello!
alicia_la_del_espejo: are you busy?
bethlmcconnell: I was just finishing up here
bethlmcconnell: Had to send a couple emails and update my log on my site.
bethlmcconnell: I'll be back this afternoon though, maybe we can chat then.
alicia_la_del_espejo: that's cool! I'm wating for reading that
alicia_la_del_espejo: hope to catch you around then, because I have sooo many doubts!
alicia_la_del_espejo: is there any way of speaking with Philip through messenger?
bethlmcconnell: Yes, but I wouldn't feel right giving out his (or anyone's) information.
alicia_la_del_espejo: I understand that
alicia_la_del_espejo: maybe you can give him my data so he can decide
bethlmcconnell: oh certainly. I can pass it along for him.
alicia_la_del_espejo: gee, thanks.
bethlmcconnell's status is now "I am currently away from the computer." (16/11/2003 02:39 p.m.)

So.... hello everyone, it's nice to be here Smile

The absolute only thing that reminds me that this is a game when talking to her is how patient she is about it. The person typing to you is eternally happy to talk to us, inviting more test ideas.

That's the sound of someone gaping at the 40 message boxes, glances at the people piled around the screen she's at, taking a deep breath and going for it, with everyone cheering her on and stopping her when she's about to say too much.

The eternally happy and cheerful and not "GEEZ! Ok, I have to go, there's waaaaaaaay too many people here and it's freakin' me out and distracting me from going around the world in three hours!" person is eternally willing to talk to us because they're probably getting paid to not alienate the players. heh. Smile

I guess I'll stop focusing on this now...I just keep thinking about the effort involved in pulling this off for the game. I'm impressed. That's what I've taken a couple of long messages to say. I'm truly impressed at the dedication of dealing with our questions and the planning and consistency in what has been said to us.

When all is said and done...excellent work, PMs. *thumbs up*

I'm reading the threads breadth-first rather than depth-first so I can sorta get an "as it happened" perspective. It's rather overwhelming.

Here is the transcript of my second chat with her

chainedlightning: Beth - you still okay out there?
chainedlightning: I think I might have an idea of how to test his purpose
chainedlightning: perhaps since he can translocate, one of his functions might be to find people who are lost... do you have anyone you'd like to find? If so then perhaps he could help you out... if he succeeds it would point in that direction
chainedlightning: have you asked him if he can run a self diagnostic test? perhaps come up with a list of what he can do?
bethlmcconnell: He told me that he had run several diagnostic tests. In fact, that is one of the ways that he has determined what he has been able to do.
bethlmcconnell: The question that seems to bother him the most is his purpose. Not unlike humans in that respect.
chainedlightning: i have a couple of guesses as to his purpose- he could be there to prevent anomolies, or he could be there as the good guy to keep the monitors from doing bad things
chainedlightning: or, he could be there to show YOU something... is there any reason you can think of that you'd be singled out?
chainedlightning: perhaps he's supposed to be showing you that reality can be altered like a computer program?
chainedlightning: Is there a way to discover whether your friend is really altering reality, or only altering your perception of reality? Perhaps have him do something in front of a crowd of people?
bethlmcconnell: that's a very interesting question.
bethlmcconnell: I've considered that myself.
chainedlightning: but hard to come up with a test for it
chainedlightning: how does Laika react to him?
bethlmcconnell: At first she treated him just as she does everyone else
bethlmcconnell: She might be a little stand off-ish
bethlmcconnell: but we're also in an unusual environment
chainedlightning: do you think she is seeing the same things you are seeing? the gravity stuff, for instance?
bethlmcconnell: You know, she must be
bethlmcconnell: I think that I was so in awe of what was happening that I wasn't paying that much attention to her
bethlmcconnell: though when I returned from my trip, I must have just suddenly appeared right in front of her
bethlmcconnell: and she didn't seem shaken
chainedlightning: on halloween, you said there were kids present - did they see what you saw?

<lots of time with no response, try different line of questioning)

chainedlightning: while we're talking, I've been meaning to ask about Avery's son... who is he living with now?
bethlmcconnell: I have no idea
bethlmcconnell: I assume that he's with James and Lynne
chainedlightning: oh - I thought they were seperated and sharing custody.. not sure where I got that idea
chainedlightning: I've heard that his biological parents might be trying to find him - like they don't have enough going on right now without having to deal with that, too.
bethlmcconnell: They were divorced
bethlmcconnell: He and I were friends after the divorce
bethlmcconnell: but I've lately had the feeling that they left together
bethlmcconnell: and I would just assume that Jesse is with them
chainedlightning: do you think they went on the run for some reason or do you suspect that something happened to them?
bethlmcconnell: i think they may have gone on the run

---------

She answered that last bit after I went to bed, so I didn't get a chance to respond anymore

It all happens when I am away from my PC! And now, I am going to be gone until Thursday... Crying or Very sad

But I am going away with my wife so that is good Wink

It may be selfish, but I hope there aren't too many revelations over the next few days... it takes me long enough to catch up when I am online all day!

Have fun all!

Sorry 'bout that - it was from last night - her final response was at something like 1:20 am (I went to bed about ten minutes before that).

Been waiting for her to come back on so I can ask her something, but I need to go to bed... (UK)

Someone else take up this idea if you get to talk to her, okay?

We know that the AI man can alter her perception. If Beth wants to find out what HIS perceptions' like, she could ask him to temporarily alter her perception to be the same as his. Showing is bound to be the most effective way, right?
If he's not sure about doing it, she could say that if she could see his perception, she could contrast it with her own and more accurately describe her normal perception to him.

That sounds like a great idea! If someone can hack her AIM account and impersonate her to grab all sorts of information, that would be very well worth it I believe. And her password could'nt be too hard to guess, her little-boxes account and metadex were easy enough. Gah, I'm going to download AIM now...
