[spec] I have this sinking feeling that before this is all over, something terrible is going to happen to Paul (i.e. deletion). [/spec]

I took a bit different approach to asking Beth questions. I figured a lot of people are already asking her the big questions, maybe i could garner some information through different lines. Take a read, let me know if any of this is important, or just lame conversation. =D

Sidenote: Should we attempt to find some suggested information we need answers to, so when we get the chance to speak with her, we have a clearer sight of the common goal here? I don't know if it will get anywhere talking about Jesse, Dina, all these people she doesn't know. Characters in this game are introduced via the game, i dont know if that has much to do with the players (that's us) making them aware of other characters they wouldn't normally know things about. Rather, Beth is asking for help on THIS issue. So maybe we're just wasting energy asking about the hackers or whatever?

Latex Generation: hey there, Ms. McConnell =)
bethlmcconnell: hi
Latex Generation: i'm not sure how much e-mail you get in that portion of your site where you ask for submissions of strange events, but i submitted an event from my own personal past. It took place in Salt Lake City. Ever been?
bethlmcconnell: No, I've not been there.
Latex Generation: It's a nice city, during the day time. The park i went to was called Memory Grove. Hm. Now that i say memory grove, it reminds me of your little situation. How's everything going with your friend? Still with him?
bethlmcconnell: Yes. He's here.
Latex Generation: You have to understand how difficult it can be to communicate through this medium (of course, you communicated with your friend through the computer!). What does he look like? Does he have hair? I picture him wearing a nice sweater like Mr. Rogers. He's everyone's friend, and you seem to talk fondly of him in your logs.
Latex Generation: I'm sure the others hanging on your every log are also have a hard time picturing your friend. i think A.I. and i think of the movie. Have you seen it? heh... now i'm picturing your friend as Jude Law. Not a bad friend to have!
Latex Generation: hm. Well, maybe you're more the Mel Gibson type.
bethlmcconnell: Mr Rogers?
bethlmcconnell: Not even close.
bethlmcconnell: And Mel Gibson, I don't think so.
Latex Generation: Is he good looking? What's his wardrobe like?
bethlmcconnell: Casual clothing
bethlmcconnell: He's not bad looking. He just looks like a normal guy.
Latex Generation: that's odd. He seemed like such a logical program when you were first talking to him, didn't he? Doesn't make much sense to me that a logical program would be dressing casually. Or does it? Maybe his purpose is a bit further from his nature. What do you think?
Latex Generation: or maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree...
bethlmcconnell: Oh, I don't think that being logical would prohibit one from a casual clothing selection.
Latex Generation: i suppose you've got a good point there, sister. do you ever find yourself all but forgetting your friend is totally synthetic?
Latex Generation: Do you think you and your friend actually travelled to these various places around the world, or have you considered the possibility this is like the report you posted regarding that area in Georgia where the twenty story building went up so fast? Maybe the area around the two of you is changing. Like different scenes and sets in a play!
bethlmcconnell: I have considered that
bethlmcconnell: and i really think that the more likely scenario
bethlmcconnell: though it was all so real.
Latex Generation: ever have a dream that seemed so real, you weren't sure if you were awake or dreaming? i used to train a little bit in lucid dreaming when i was younger, and actually had some instances where i was totally aware of my own dream state. i guess the difference here would be that *I* was the one in control of my 'virtual' surroundings, whereas you don't seem to be.
Latex Generation: are the two of you still testing? do you even really know what you're testing for?
bethlmcconnell is away at 11:08 PM
bethlmcconnell: I don't really know what I am testing for
bethlmcconnell: which is quite frustrating
Latex Generation: believe me, Beth, you're not alone in your frustration. I can only imagine you're trying to keep up with droves of people asking similiar questions, so you have to realize that we all feel your frustration, probably moreso as a result of getting this information second hand.
Auto response from bethlmcconnell: I am currently away from the computer.
bethlmcconnell: yes, I can imagine that.
bethlmcconnell: I've been dealing with that for several years, only on a slightly different subject.
Latex Generation: which subject is that?
bethlmcconnell: well on paranormal research, which this is. but it just seems like so much more. Perhaps because I'm involved first hand, I don't know.
bethlmcconnell: but I'm going to head off now, probably for the night.
Latex Generation: one last thing, Beth.
bethlmcconnell: I've gotten a lot of ideas tonight
bethlmcconnell: yes?
Latex Generation: Don't fret over needing to find all the answers right away. You might not know what you're testing for, but right now you're just feeling it out. It's a good idea to feel it out before you really get your hands dirty. Do you know what i mean?
bethlmcconnell: I do.
bethlmcconnell: but that's always good advice.
Latex Generation: and i understand. as i said earlier, experiencing a strange event first hand often makes it seem almost less hard to believe, doesn't it? Don't answer that.. I already know how you'd answer. Get some rest, darlin'... =) 'nite
Latex Generation: oh, if you haven't left.. maybe while you're sleeping, your friend could talk to us for awhile. I assume he knows how to use a computer!

I keep thinking of him/it as God. Created the world. Changes it on a whim if necessary.

Delete it? Interesting idea.
What happens when you delete the thing that creates your reality...?

I had a conversation with Beth earlier tonight. I thought I'd share it.
Quote:
adagio: Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, I fell asleep. I have a cold. Are you still there?
bethlmcconnell: I am currently away from the computer.
bethlmcconnell: I am here now.
bethlmcconnell: I hope that your cold isn't a terrible one!
bethlmcconnell: sleep is good. As is juice. Drink lots of juice.
adagio: HI Beth
adagio: I was working on the computer in the other room
adagio: You are probably busy, but I am fascinated by your research, and would like to ask you some questions.
bethlmcconnell: oh, what would you like to ask?
adagio:
Actually when I woke up from, something occurred to me. Would it be possible for your friend to cure illness or injury?
bethlmcconnell: I don't know
bethlmcconnell: that's interesting
adagio: Also, I wondered is it possible for him to become ill or sustain injury?
bethlmcconnell: again, I don't know
bethlmcconnell: but that would be interesting
adagio: You said he appears to be just like a regular man. Have you touched him? I was wondering if he was some kind of holographic projection. Is his skin warm to the touch? Does he understand that he is not human?
bethlmcconnell's status is now "I am currently away from the computer." (11/16/2003 11:10 PM)
bethlmcconnell: he feels just like another other person feels
bethlmcconnell: but i'm getting ready to sign off for a while
adagio: I am fascinated by your experience. But, I am not there in person, facing these incredible things. I would be terrified if I were you. Why aren't you running away? Why do you feel compelled to stay and help your friend?
bethlmcconnell: I am currently away from the computer.
bethlmcconnell: i'm anxious to talk to him some more
bethlmcconnell: (sorry about the away... but I was getting ready to leave so I figured I should mark myself that way)
adagio: I do that all the time
adagio: BTW - cold is getting much better. I was even able to sing in church today. That's a relief!
bethlmcconnell: well that's good.
adagio: Yes, it is I love to sing. May I ask another question?
bethlmcconnell: sure.
adagio: Does he understand morality? You know, wrong and right? Maybe you could try and ask him to deposit a million dollars in you bank account? Wait, that could get you in trouble if he actually can do it. What could you ask him to do that is obviously immoral, but at the same time won't really hurt anyone? Maybe steal something? Or maybe tell a lie?
adagio: I was wondering about this because with the amazing abilities your friend has, it would seem his actions could have some frightening consequences if he didn't understand that he was hurting someone.
adagio: When I was a teenager, I used to spend summers with my dad in Washington, near Wenatchee. The scenery is sometimes breath-halting. I love driving in the Cascades. Are you still camping?
bethlmcconnell: I am still camping.
bethlmcconnell: I hope to be home in a couple days though, I miss my bed
bethlmcconnell: yes, morality would be important.
adagio: I sympathise. No matter how great your equipment is, a tent is not four walls and a electric blanket.
bethlmcconnell: and I am not really a camper at heart.
adagio: Remember to check your shoes before you put them on. Slugs tend to crawl in them. I am speaking from experience. I did some camping with my Dad.
adagio: You seem to be following your instincts, trusting your friend.
adagio: When in doubt, I follow my instincts. I think you will be OK.
bethlmcconnell: I hope so.
adagio: I read your log. You said he is asking lots of questions about emotions and relationships. Does he understand what love is? Have you tried to explain it?
bethlmcconnell: how do you explain love. I've tried, but I don't know how successful I've been.
bethlmcconnell: I'm heading off for the evening
adagio: I'm not sure if my explaination would make sense to him, but if you want, you can try it.
bethlmcconnell: what is it?
adagio: Love is giving part of yourself to another, knowing you'll never get it back, and feeling happy about it.

I don't think there's anything earth shaking in there, but maybe a tidbit or two.

Someone needs to ask her/tell her to contact her mom. Katgirl's metadex saying "Mother no longer an issue" freaks the heck out of me. I guess I'll ask her tomorrow if no one else does.

I don't think there's any evidence of him being God-like at all. He didn't create anything, and none of his changes are permanent. He can't create anything as far as we see to this point, and most of his "manipulations" as Beth puts it, are to things like the wind, teperature, weather, etc., and only temporary. There's nothing God-like about that, especially not considering that this may be a "Matrix-like" world.

It's said that for quite some time now... maybe 3 weeks or so?

I thought all gaia figures had to be female? Wink Heh, maybe he's changing Beth's perceptions more than we thought? Although, considering he is just a program, he doesn't actually have a gender.

I told her that was after my grandfather... (he was actually Paul)

but... Paul is the apostole of jesus who lied after jesus "suposed to be death"... because actually after jesus was taken out of the cross, he was actually on some sort of coma, and he came out by himself contacting a few diciples that took him to India right away, an there he lived until he was 120... (120dc) around 55dc Paul still thinking that jesus was dead, he started spreading the Evangelion throughout the people... wich they imediatlly followed... but he actually had no idea what he was talking about...

Please, I dont want to start a religious discussion here... I'm just expressing the reason of the name... that just the story I've read... Cool

Hi,
Quick introduction, I don't really know all that much about computers, but I stumbled across the metacortex website while I was hyping myself up for Revolutions, and then I found this website, and I have been trying to follow along with all of you, and now we get this cool interaction with Beth.

Now I have read this whole post and it seems like we all want hard facts, and she doesn't seem too keen on giving us anything new. What if we asked her other questions, like Where is Thomas Anderson, if she knew him, why he was transferred, things like that, maybe he knew something he wasn't supposed to know? Maybe we can pull her away from this AI program for a little bit, and get some other questions answered. Or we could try and ask her about what all Metacortex does, R&D type stuff. Just a few ideas to toss out, Once again, I am new to some of this, but good luck, I enjoy following along, its like reading a really cool book!

Welcome to the team, dphopki.
Unfortunately we already tried that line of questioning, but she said she didn't know him (you would have thought they'd at least have met around the water cooler or something!)
