If you'll pardon the double-post, here is a hypothesis developed in the OoG chat. Most of the credit for it belongs to Daniel [Neoplayer2]. (Not!Doctor and Pardicolor seem to have come up with something else, but have not yet revealed it.)

The first is a one-frame capture from KarmA's Return video, depicting a pair of eyes with a cross-mark in each (the meaning of the central figure is indeterminate). The whole symbol is identical to that in the upper-right corner of the second image.

Based on the information that has been given to us on what are called Soul Masks, it seems that this is a feature of Complete Absorption. After 'fully accepting' one of the Masks that the Chosen have, the pattern of the Mask is Imprinted upon the user's face; approximately fifty years following, a specific Theurgic ritual can be performed in which the Mask-symbol transfers to the eyes, and allow the wearing of another Mask, and the acquiration of its augmentative powers.

This is all a little esoteric. The second image appears to be a set of symbols centred about a drawing of Darkness, KarmA's mentor in Theurgy. Apart from the symbol already discussed, the six-line pattern at middle-right seems to match the pattern on Darkness' face/mask. The third and final symbol, at the upper left, seems to be the same cross-mark that is represented in the eyes. We may deduce that this is a Mask-pattern, and indeed, the pattern of the Mask that Darkness previously wore.

The third image depicts, apart from the Master, a number of symbols that correlate to known Mask-patterns. (The images of the individual masks of the Chosen are a little too numerous, but they can be viewed together here at the present.) The upper-left pattern is ShadowLeaves', the lower-left is unknown, and on the right, from the bottom to the top, are Alexis Morris', Vadiir's. and the cross-symbol, which matches very well to KarmA's mask.

No two masks have identical patterns, and KarmA's mask has not been imprinted yet; nor is it fifty years old, as it was made especially for him. How does Darkness come to have that symbol in his eyes?

Well, considering it is still an unproven hypothesis, and considering the circumstances in which it came about, our idea is indeed of comparable credibility to Not!Doctor's.
