I've got:

Perfect Dark Zero
Call of Duty 2
Kameo
Geometry Wars 2

I might get PGR3 sometime, but having never played a PGR game, not sure if I'll like it or not. Might be a rental. Also need to deal with the lack of dollars in my account thanks to said purchase. Smile

Which 360 package did you two get? I'm pondering getting one myself.

Not freaking out yet (and I don't have a sys... I'm going to $have$ to wait until the price drops a bit before I can buy) but have any of you had the apparent overheating problem that causes crashes?

/. has a story on the crashes today, and most people believe it's due to overheating. (Mind you, I'm certain this is all just first gen stuff and it will be resolved. I'm still totally getting a 360 when funds allow...)

So anyone here had that problem? Or do y'all think it's more of a small, faulty hardware kinda thing (that happens in a small percentage of ANY item sold in large quantities, especially at launch)

See, that kinda stuff is why I am not an early adopter.

The incriminating evidence.

Maybe it's because I've been on these forums for a while now, but you did not type too much, and that was a very nice thing that you did.

I love how other people are all, "u wrote a lot but that wz niec of u"

Heheheheheheh.

yeah, i noticed that too. I was hoping the grammar was partially due to it being late, but it really wasn't that late. XD

Ah well.

And yeah, it was just big compared to other topics there, so it looked weird at first. Smile

I grabbed the Premium system - I did have to camp out, as my pre-order at EB fell through, but it was a fairly decent experience - 9PM to 9AM, it was coldish but not below freezing; it *was* raining but we had the foresight to camp out at the local CompUSA which had a cover over our heads, so we didn't get a drop on us. We had plenty of blankets and a nice group that let us head out for drinks/bathroom breaks. They actually gave us the purchase vouchers an hour and a half early, which was really nice, as it gave us a chance to go someplace warm for an hour before heading back to purchase the system.

I haven't had a single problem with mine - the most I can say is that when you fire up a game it does get slightly noisy, but well within reason - it's less noisy then the beast of a PC sitting underneath my desk. I'm wondering how many people aren't providing for adequeate ventilation, not only of the unit itself (which kicks out a significant amount of heat!) but of the power supply; if that overheats then you're in trouble as well.

General thoughts:

  • The dashboard is just as nice as everyone says it is. With the one small exception of having a confusing divide between videos/trailers you download and gameplay footage, it's very well thought out, easy to navigate through, and just plain gorgeous to look at.

  • The controllers are quite simply the best controllers I've ever had the pleasure of holding. Seriously. These things are comfy as all hell; I thought I was going to miss my good ol' Duke, but these things are just amazing.

  • The guide button is a stroke of genious also - my main problem with Live games was how troublesome it was to get to the Live features in every game. Now you just push the button and everything's right there. It even has system-wide notifications - if krystyn logs on I get a nice little pop-up that tells me "krystyn has signed on", and I can press the button and get all the options for send message, invite to chat, join game, etc. It also lets you put on custom soundtracks, which I haven't wanted to do for any of the big games I have but greatly appreciate for Geometry Wars.

  • Speaking of which, the iPod support is just too cool. It just works, which is something I usually reserve saying for Apple products. Razz If only it played my purchased music from the iTMS...

  • This is available to everyone of course, but I really like the integration with xbox.com. It's nice to be able to compare my achievements with a friend's and see exactly what we've done/haven't done.

  • Small bad thing: The plastic on the front of the CD tray left some kind of goopy stuff on there. Looks nasty but doesn't affect functionality. Next time I unhook it I'll probably try to scrape it off, but it's fine for now.

First game impressions:

  • Perfect Dark Zero: About what I expected. Not Halo, but fun enough. Looks fairly pretty. Haven't tried Multiplayer yet.

  • Call of Duty 2: For those of you who have played a Call of Duty game, imagine that but kicked up a notch. For those who haven't, it's an awe-inspiring experience - bullets flying everywhere, squadmates calling out all over and calling out useful advice - very good.

  • Kameo: Soundtrack is *awesome* - might have to find out if they have a CD. The gameplay isn't bad either, although of course you lose all your powers in the first level so it's not quite as interesting as it was in the first level which required lots of switching around, battle, etc. More play is required before a final judgement.

  • Geometry Wars: Hard, but very fun. About all I can say. It's only $5 or so. Do it.

  • Backwards Compatibility: The only game I've tried so far is Ninja Gaiden Black, which I had handy; I didn't have my copy of Halo 2 as I lent it + my Xbox 1 to someone for a birthday LAN party. A very definite improvement in visual quality; looks quite a bit sharper and clearer. I got Halo 2 back, so I'm probably off to throw that in and ooh and ah, and maybe play with folks if anyone's around.

Small wishlist:

  • More games on the backwards compatibility list. I've got a ton of games on my desk that won't play in the thing that I'd kind of like to play. Hopefully they'll be fairly proactive about adding games to the list.

  • Streaming music from my Mac to the 360. Not a problem for a good chunk of people I realize, but it would be nice to not have to move all the cables around to plug in my iPod.

  • An adapter to use my Halo 2 headset with the controller. I realize that it works just fine (and it does), but I'd like a little pucky thing for the volume control/mute. Hopefully a third party will release some little doohicky to do this.

Overall, very happy with my Xbox 360. Time will tell, but I think we'll have a happy relationship with each other. In fact, I'm off to spend some quality time with it right now... Twisted Evil

P.S. Fugitive - really nice thing you did. I'm not sure I could've done that, especially after waiting outside in the cold all night. You're a better man than I. Smile

And I was that little boy.

Just kiddin.

Seriously dude... if I had money (which I don't) but if I did, I would buy you a system myself. And honestly, you MADE that kid's christmas, and as a father I can also assure you that you made that DAD's christmas as well.

Now the problem is that little dude's grades are going to fall horribly cuz now he's got a 360... lol.

Oh I have the money myself, in the form of $424 in cash at GameStop that was put down in August.

But I am not guaranteed 2nd shipment, it may be as late as 4th for me.

So I will keep looking and hoping.

(lol, I thought about the kid's grades too, now that he won his incentive we shall see how long he stays on the Honor Roll ;0 )
