Episode 8

alright, here's a meaty episode!

Let's find this "flying bird". Take a look at this statue, which sits above the entrance to Grand Central at 43rd and Lexington.
Eagle Statue

This isn't any bird statue though. First of all, it's not at the place it was originally erected, i.e. its 'home sweet home' or its 'nest'. Where is its nest? It is one of the eagle statues that was part of the original Grand Central Station, which was demolished near the beginning of the 20th century. The original station was located (approximately) 250 feet away from this entrance! Read more at:
Story of Eagle

There are 4 paths leading away from this bird, one in each direction: North, South, East, West. We are instructed to follow the bird's path, but away from it's nest. So we should follow the 'path' that leads us away from the Terminal. In fact, the direction the bird is facing is directly down E 43rd St.

This next step stumped me for a while, "we should have been listening to Mulligan from the very beginning". As Mulligan says a lot of weird stuff in Ep. 1, I wasn't sure what he was referring to‚ maybe 'code of all codes', 'crows nest', etc. I wandered along the East path in Google street view, I couldn't see anywhere that one could dig, and no significant landmarks either.

And then, it clicked. Just like one of those movie moments in Usual Suspects, where you flash back to the beginning and think "OH‚.. MY‚.. GOD‚..". "The very beginning", the very first clue of the whole series, was said by Mulligan. What did he say? "And we'll never tell them spies that we first had that gold in Central Park". Also, in episode 3, Larry makes reference to it! "Mr. Mulligan. Now you blatantly said Central Park. Is that where this alleged treasure is buried?" Note that they don't respond: everyone pauses, and then they break out into laughter. What's so funny? Anybody walking down the path would laugh out loud when they saw this:
CENTRAL PARKING SYSTEMS

Yes... CENTRAL PARKing Systems. Very very clever. The captain also says: "I'm disgustipated by the LOT of ye". At first I had assumed that this must be the place... open 24 hours, protected from the weather. This idea didn't pan out, because it is a valet-only lot so you can't actually go in and look around. But, not to be discouraged I pressed on.

I noticed that I haven't used anything about Tutty, or "can someone check if I have a piece of wood sticking out of my head?". Well, it turns out that right next door to this parking lot is a Japanese restaurant... actually, it's a Yakitori Bar, where Yakitori is a Japanese dish consisting of chicken on wooden skewer (wood sticking out of a bird, hmm). Further, the name of the restaurant is: Soba Totto... yes, Totto. Remarkably close to Tutty, and possibly clued at when Mulligan said "replaced Tutty with a potato... hah, potato". As searching "Totto" in a search engine would help people find the place easily, they used "Tutty" instead, and it would be clear once you found the right place.

So I went to visit this restaurant, found nothing. It's in rather large office building, so I checked the directory and didn't see anything stand out. Checked the basement (there's another Japanese restaurant down there). Also checked the top floor (the crow's nest). Nothing.

My only remaining thought, a long-shot, is that you have to go to Soba Totto's other location, which is called Yakitori Totto. So if someone wants to search there go ahead, and maybe cut me in on some of the gold if you find it Wink

I would have thought the references to the crows nest mean the roof, not the top floor. Can you get on the roof of the parking lot? Because I think you're spot on about the 'aha' moment with that.

Otherwise, if you go all the way to the end of 43rd street, there is some grassy area there, according to Googlemap? So maybe the potential for some digging there. Not that I'd want to, in the middle of the street!

Can't get into the parking lot, valet only.

I did check out the grassy areas at the end of 43rd as well.

The end is actually called Tudor City. Which is interesting for two (probably far reaching) reasons. If you go all the way to the end, the road is very high over 1st avenue (maybe some crow's nest connection, highest point of the ship). Also, Tudor and Tutty sound similar.

That's all I got.
