Books, Movies, & Games for the PM Library

Not sure about you all, but I'm always looking for inspiration & ideas and thought that it would be fun share some of our best finds with each other, especially since we're all so varied in our strengths & interests. Inspiration and help can come from all forms... fiction & non-fiction, comics & classics. Yet sometimes we all get in a rut and start reading & watching the same things over and over. So, let's share and help each other find some interesting things that they might not have found otherwise Smile

I'll start w/books that I've used rather extensively in studying and writing on ARGs and games.

Books that specifically discuss ARGs
Digital Storytelling : A Creator's Guide to Interactive Entertainment by Carolyn Handler Miller
While this book focuses on multiple types of interactive entertainment, it discusses several ARGs and what they did right and wrong. There are some editing issues, but all in all a pretty good resource.

Pause & Effect: The Art of Interactive Narrative by Mark Meadows
Not only is this book very pretty, it contains some great insight on interactive narrative and includes interviews with Elan Lee and Adrian Hon.

A bit more on the academic side of things:
Hamlet on the Holodeck: The Future of Narrative in Cyberspace by Janet Murray
While this book is a bit older than the others I've mentioned, it is the must read for anyone interested in interactive storytelling. I've read it a half a dozen times now and every time that I pick it up, I get something new out of it.

Rules of Play by Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman
This was one of my textbooks in my game design course. It's definitely a textbook but it's an excellent read. It's all about play and design. Some of it will seem like common sense but it really helps you to think things through from a play perspective. It also mentions the Beast, ever so briefly, at the end of the (very big) book.

First Person : New Media as Story, Performance, and Game edited by Noah Waldrip-Fruin & Pat Harrigan
This collection contains writings by some of the best new media theorists around which makes for a very interesting read. I strongly recommend it if you're interested in a more academic look on new media. I also love Jane McGonigal's response to Cyberdrama in which she advocates moving cyberdrama away from console computing... not so sure I'm happy because of what she says or that she's responding to my professors (Murray & Mateas) in a way that I wish I was able to Smile

I'm going to post some books and games that might help PMs with inspiration

Books: I don't know many, but here goes.

The Giver by Lois Lowry (just because)
Anything by Tom Clancy (duh)
Anything by Ayn Rand (watch your IQ skyrocket)

Games: I know a few.

Perfect Dark for N64 (I love conspiracies)
Splinter Cell (duh)
Killer 7 for GCN (it'll freak ya out)
Advent Rising (coming soon)
Dance Dance Revolution (it clears the mind)
Galerians (I have no idea what system it's on)
FF7 for PS1 (boy I love conspiracies)

MOVIES:

The Game with Michael Douglas. This puppy is practically a textbook on endgame madness. Stil a lot of fun.

Midnight Madness from Disney. Silly fluff, but gotta love da scavenger hunt.

AI: Not a single excuse for NOT watching this. If you read up on the Beast, it helps to know the world.

The Blair Witch Project 1 & 2. Lovely exercise in psychological terror. Nudity wanring for part 2. One can take notes on how to take people to the edge with psychological torture...and beyond.

Alice in Wonderland. Possibly the single most-referenced book in ARGs. Plus: Rabbithole!

I know a few...

Books:

Novels by Andy McNab
Novels by Dan Brown (great lessons in tension and creating atmosphere)
1984 by George Orwell (the character work is amazing)

Games:

XIII for PS2/GC/Xbox (fantastic for conspiracy junkies)
Metal Gear Solid series for PS1/2 (same as above)

Movies/shows:

24 is a good one

Update: Breathing Room

"Breathing Room"
Horror Thriller
Directed by John Suits. 2007
Genres: Horror, Psychological Thrillers
Rated NR (I would give it a PG-13 for language & violence)

If you have never heard of it don't feel bad, it's definitely not going to win any academy awards so don't expect too much. The plot is simple: 14 people locked in a room forced to play a game in order to survive. Some of the players are given objects while others are given clues.

It is currently on Netflix if you have a membership.

Movie: Nemesis Game

"Nemesis Game"
Horror Thriller
Directed by Jesse Warn 2003
Genres: Horror, Psychological Thrillers
Rated R

I'm sure this one has been mentioned before somewhere, but I thought I'd make it easier for the new people to find. It's basically about a psychotic Puppet Master. Again, it won't win any awards but fans of physical puzzles (ME!! ) and riddle junkies will appreciate it.

Currently on Netflix
