Question.
We all agree that the area is a clearing because trees were knocked down to build this house.
So this house gets old/burns down/who knows what and what is left is this chimney in a clearing.
So if a tree grew and forced its way into this chimney, why are there no other trees or other signs of plant life in the clearing? Especially since this is a whole, full grown tree. In that time the clearing should not be clear anymore, or at least, as clear as it is.

This is actually a really pertinent question--why has only ONE tree grown into that clearing after all this time? Shouldn't it be mostly overgrown by now if a tree is growing through the chimney? Spooky.

The chimney was built around the tree.

Oddly enough, areas of forest that are clear-cut for building houses don't generally grow back where the houses were right away. It takes more 200 years for a forest to grow in that thick. I'm guessing the original houses that were there (OOG) were probably built in the mid 1800s.

Could make sense, in-game. Maybe there were houses here of people that were Slender Victims?

I sort of really doubt that. Why would you build something that you burn wood in around something made out of wood? That's just stupid.

in-game, I'd say it has to do with the whole "trees growing unnaturally fast" thing, but OOG, I have no clue

Such a major theme throughout the series.

Random idea moment;
To everyone thats saying that the conversation with Alex could not have taken place because he would not have willingly gone back to the forest, did you ever think he didn't remember what happened? So far, ever time Jay has actually witnessed Slenderman he has lost his memory. This includes the TTA videos as well as the talk with Tim where slendy is chilling outside. Seeing as how he dropped his footage, he would have no way of knowing exactly what happened that day.

Sounds plausible enough but just what do you mean "the interview with Alex could not have taken place because he would not have willingly gone back to the forest"? What entry are you talking about? If you mean 38, that wasnt exactly an interview.

It was more like a "put the camera down so I can rape you" discussion.

I'm curious as to how the conversation between Alex and J will go when Alex finally does get to the park. Also curious about how he convinces J to go walk with him through those woods in the evening after a slenderpants sighting.

I'll have to rewatch 38, but I'm starting to think that happened before 40.

Gah, this thread moves a lot faster than anything I'm used to. I think I have an answer, though.
It seemed to me that the field the chimney was in had been mowed recently. I'm pretty sure it was in the middle of a kudzu flat. Kudzu is an epidemic in the south, and can grow so thick that it chokes out all but the tallest and oldest trees (such as the one in question). I've also seen it grow over abandoned homes and such, sometimes so thick that the structure collapses. The chimney is usually the last thing standing. The cheap and easy way to manage kudzu is to mow it, causing that brown, twiggy mess that you can kinda see when Jay points the camera in the right direction. Another option is goats by the way, it's one of their favorite snacks.
The permanent solution is napalm, but that's neither here nor there.
