It seems unlikely that MetaCortex is actually responsible for Avery's disappearance: Now that we know what we know about Beth's friend, it seems more than likely that MC is not actually responsible, but someone there has taken prudent steps to protect the value of the corporation by creating this story of Avery going off to Europe and quietly slipping away into retirement.

Why on earth would MetaCortex create this rediculous explanation if they weren't responsible? If they know nothing about the disappearance, they would simply say "Our CEO is missing, and we hope he's OK"... Making up some excuse is only an attempt to cover their tracks... MetaCortex was either responsible for what happened on purpose or by accident, but either way, they've got to be involved somehow.

I don't think they would lie about it if they had nothing to do with it. What would they stand to lose? Whether they make up the story or not, in both scenarios Avery disappears - either in the US or in Zurich. I'm not clear as to how one of those 2 scenarios is more "damaging" to the company than the other.

Well, either way, MetaCortex's stocks would be really suffering right now if the stock market knew the truth - three employees (Thomas Anderson, James Avery, and now Kat) disappearing, without trace, in such a short space of time (economy-wise)? Anyone want to calculate the odds of that happening?

EDIT: Spelling

It seems strange to answer now, given that the world I was beginning to accept as real enough to enjoy on a daily basis had faded to black ... but anyhow:

For a major corporation to announce that its CEO has vanished would diminish the value of that corporation immediately, and potentially in a lasting way. There would be rampant speculation about foul play, wrongdoing, perhaps even questions about the stability of the company itself ... if it can't take care of its most valuable employee, what does that say about the company?

Like any large organization, a change in leader requires a smooth transition of power to prevent there from being significant negative ramifications and a chaotic reaction to the uncertainty created. We now know that Avery disappeared because of what Jesse figured out and then told his dad about the nature of reality. The monitors/agents simply can't allow people with that knowledge to walk around. Jesse apparently witnessed his parents being taken, and took photographs and fled to the Emersons by car ... so the Averys were taken in Redland.

So where does the transfer to Zurich, living in Europe for a year, and then retirement story come from? This seems to me like something MetaCortex would fabricate specifically to ensure a smooth transfer of power to a new CEO, with no scandal and no corresponding drop in stock value. Multi-billion dollar coporations take this sort of thing remarkably seriously, and I imagine they sometimes undertake extraordinary courses of action because of the consequences involved.
