The movie was great. Saw it twice. Looking forward to Bad Robot's next stuff.

Also, I think that I heard Charles mention returning a book on "koken ciphers". It is from the last day of school scene. anyone else hear that?

I thought it might be a clue to decode the moby dick comic.

The end- when I saw what happened to the water tower- and I remembered the thread with the two pictures of Lillian - and I was going to say, hey theres something very different about the pictures.
Turns out it was relevant and I kept my mouth shut.

what do you mean about the 2 pictures of lillian, if you could fill me in on that I would really appreciate it.

I saw the movie and was not as blown away as many of you. I felt like it ended wayy too quickly, like right when it had you on board and you saw all you wanted to see of the alien, his alarm clock went off and he had to run up to his ship to leave. I think if they made him have to get to someplace else to leave, and battle through more military guys, that would have been enough to leave me satisfied, but its tough to get on board when there really wasnt a struggle.

Like for all that military going haywire footage we saw, all that was was the alien making the electronics mess up. And I know I saw during those scenes a military jeep driving with a gun on the back and a guy firing the gun. So I understand if tanks are misbehaving and shooting in all directions, but did the alien possess that guy shooting a gun?! That made no sense.

So it was a good movie all in all, and it wasnt boring, maybe halfway through the film you really never get a break to just take a breath or maybe take a piss, that was good. It just felt like some extra action was missing, or additional scenes with the kids and parents, it was a little too short. So thank you JJ for not making it 3 hours and 40 minutes too long, but too short is a problem too

A complaint about the movie being too short, I'm okay with that Razz A good movie should never end!

The homage to Spielberg's movies

I think JJ was perhaps a little overanxious (and ambitious) in making a movie that if his name had not been a part of the credits, you would have thought it was a Spielberg movie. JJ's works remind me of Rod Serling's twists and turns, which we can become accustomed to, but S8 seemed to be lacking JJ's touch, and while I liked the version of the the movie I saw--stuck in bed, if you catch my drift--it, to me was formulaic Spielberg with a slight sprinkling of JJ.

The strongest point for me was the character development, but truthfully, with these two heavyweights, I was expecting something more sustaining.

At least it was better than he Alternate Reality Joke/Prank.

If there's actually a well-paced, thought provoking ARG on the horizon, perhaps you could private message me, or e-mail me at xenolambrose@ just about any e-mail service.

thanks,

XL

I like Super 8 for what it is, but i truly believe that JJ's secrecy gimmick is only to hook viewers in, only to reveal that the secrecy isn't hiding anything other than the lack of substance or revelation. Its a mask thats worn to drive up Initial interest and thats it. I sincerely hope he doesnt become the next shalaman (one trick pony) once people figure this out, because i think he genuinely creates the BEST premises for ideas, he just never sees them through.

Can someone fill me in on what i missed and why we dub the monster "cooper" now..

The reason I ask is that to me i think Cpt. Cooper...and i caught something i dont think anyone else has or very few...after or before the monster crushes sherrifs car you see a reflection of an astronaut in the movie...and a credit to "cooper" is to an actor...who i could EASILY see being that part. I saw stuff where that actor was quoted as giving hints he played the monster...but i think that was all a joke.

I loved all the references and overall enjoyed the movie since we all here..know a little bit of background on the characters.

Why?

Supposedly, J.J. Abrams himself in interviews refers to the monster in Super8 as Cooper.

I have read and viewed a few interviews and he does indeed refer to the monster as "Cooper".

According to forum members its a combination of Clovie and Super8.

I have seen Super8 twice, and have seen the monsters reflection in the Gas puddle. Kinda cool when it happens cause you're not really expecting it.

I have not seen the Astronauts reflection as you say there is.

I'm not doubting you, I just haven't seen it. Maybe you could be more specific as to when you see this reflection.

I liked the movie very much, and yes I felt sorta half full when it ended.
Mainly because I did not want it to end. I sure do wish that there could have been more. But I still liked it.

I guess this movie is half a sandwich to some, but to us ARG folks, this year long treasure hunt was the first half of that sandwich, with the movie being the second half. So we're full, or are we?

People that did not know about this forum and the year long activities, expressed that the movie could have had more to it.

I suspect that us ARG folks felt the movie was just fine because we had the back story. And I wish that they could have used all that in the movie, from the time they discovered the craft in space, to nuking it down, to testing it, and then onto transporting it, to where we pick up the train accident.

I had to do some explaining to my lady friend to get her up to speed.

I didn't want her to know everything as I wanted to gauge her reaction to just seeing the movie itself. Heck, she didn't even know I was on this forum.

When I later explained what had gone on previously with this movie, she had a better understanding of it.

You hear that J.J.? Great movie for some, half a sandwich for others.

It's seem the other half of the whole needs another order of fries, we're fat.

I thought this movie was fantastic

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I loved this creature's control over the electronics. That scene with the army trucks firing all over the place was surreal.

From the train wreck on my heart was beating wildly. I had to disconnect for a moment so I could get my breath back. It was that awesome.

Does anyone think it was using the water tower as fuel? I got that distinct impression.

Anteros - yes the water already contained in a large tank on a launch pad could have been Cooper's fuel of choice. Then in addition to the human coming of age / family healing / LIVE message, another lesson could be in hospitality. Too bad we were such rude hosts to Cooper. If we were a little more friendly, maybe he would have shared his H2O fuel technology with us.

I absolutely loved it. It met my expectations, a little higher too. Cooper was really cute too in some way. Very Happy

The whole ARG was / is so mind thrilling and exiting , with the scarriestthing website and the movie room editing the clips, that my expectations to see the movie did grow sky high...

And then when I saw the movie, it was a big disapointment for me.

I remember the interview: The creature designer told "When that door blows open," he says, "it's the ultimate reveal. It's Elvis or something."
Welll you noticed that scene your self I think.... Wink

There is no " WOW " moment in the movie....

Well.. the train crash is the "WOW" moment, but that we knew already..
