super 8 alien's characteristics review of what we think we know Alien Characteristics (from all sources except from those who have already seen the movie, please no spoilers or make sure to use spoiler text):
special use/generation of electricity
spade-like front "claw"
subterranean habitat
carnivorous
vocal (roar)
fast movement
seems to prefer darkness
hibernation
tentacles/long tongue ?
strength
intelligent/greater technology
What else can we piece together?

This variety review reports the aliens appearance as "spider like" and "arachnid" it also compares it to HR Geiger's (sp?) alien

One of the clips did mention the alien's spasms of primary limbs, i guess meaning that there are secondary limbs. so definitely something with several limbs.
I found this interesting site that discusses the characteristics of burrowing animals:
http://scientificindian.com/2010/12/23/amazing-digging-adaptations-by-animals/
I wonder if neville page (the monster/alien designer-guy) used any of these animals for inspiration?

from imdb
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It is very realative to the Cloverfield monster. But smaller. Probably about 2 to 3 stories tall.
It has 6 limbs, not tenacles, and very muscular. It has a sort of grayish and peach coloring to it.
It looks like the combination of a spider and a gorilla, minus all the hair.
As far as it's face. It does have some human physical features to it. Like having an oval shape, forehead, and mild cheek bones. It has large black eyes. A nose that looks like four small squares. It's mouth is pretty big when open. When closed it looks somewhat like a cross shape because it opens in four different sections.

That IMDB description is completely accurate. I want a figure of the alien to put next to my Clovie.

That would be awesome, maybe to scale with the Hasbro Clover, or maybe not, Clover is kinda large, but still a figure to display with Clover would be cool

That's a general idea of it.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It is bi-pedal though, at least sometimes. Its eyes are normally closed, but for Joe it opens them and they have a staring moment. Very nice.

That analogy reminds me of Spider Ape from Spy Kids 2

That connection between them was indeed one of the flick's best moments. Of which it had many.

Thanks for keeping the spoilers hidden!!! Although it has been difficult, so far I have not peeked at them. I plan on seeing the movie Friday.
Anyway, with most of the clips opened in the editing room I will add that the alien also has:
a nictitating membrane or second eyelid
digits on at least some of its limbs
special electrical relationship might include "electromagnetic forces"
Have I missed any other special features of the alien known from pre-movie and pre-review sources?
I really enjoy how JJ has taken a real-life event like Operation ARGUS (which was crazy in and of itself!) and added his storyline - even copying the real ARGUS film format/style.
(see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZu7et1dZlA )
And it seem neville page has done a good job taking real animal/insect characteristics mixing/matching/extrapolating them to design the alien.
I'm sure I will enjoy the film, but I hope JJ doesn't leave us 'hanging' as much as he has with Cloverfield! Hey JJ,... some mystery is great, but keep the mystery box from being frustratingly large, please!

Im not peeking at the alien stuff, Have not seen movie yet...
I am assuming "IT" is what we are in a sense.. flawed.
As I said before you can turn anyone into meat eating barbarian even your vegan, free love hippies.
Tabula rasa right?; Torture can turn even the most brilliant and elevated mind into a de-evolved animalistic one. This is what im still guessing..even if I am wrong DONT TELL ME!!!
Now as for the monkey's..er apes.. I mean Brilliant scientists this quote comes to mind;
"Vague and insignificant forms of speech, and abuse of language, have so long passed for mysteries of science; and hard or misapplied words with little or no meaning have, by prescription,
such a right to be mistaken for deep learning and height of speculation, that it will not be easy to persuade either those who speak or those who hear them, that they are but the covers of ignorance and hindrance of true knowledge."

wow, Jane that's some pretty deep stuff. What got you into that mode? Something I posted?! Well, I'm not sure what to say.....but I don't disagree with anything you posted.
As far as the completed editing room video, I not sure it tells us anything new about the alien.
(I'm not putting the following into spoiler text, because the official viral stuff is meant to be seen before the movie. If someone wanted to see the movie as a "viral virgin" they would avoid this forum altogether.)

So to be exact we get to see a limb of the alien in action. We knew it had long "limbs" with digits on at least some of them. It does indicate approximate size of the alien. And maybe more importantly the nature of the limb, in that it seems to be joint-legged/segmented - so more arachnid-like and less like an octopus' arm. (At least the limb we get to briefly see.)
Again, if any other official viral stuff (pre-movie/pre-review) hints at more specific features/characteristics of the alien, please post your comment.
Thanks.

Actually Jane, the more I think about what you posted, the more I appreciate it as a unique approach to understanding the alien. Kinda speaks to the psychology/motivation of the alien. I like it. Good insight.
