I'm going to remove myself from this conversation because I have a blinding gut feeling that Rocky is going to be mentioned or appear again. Admittedly it's not backed up by any logic, but I really believe it.

is it possible that the bullet casing was from someone shooting the dog?
Maybe the dog wouldn't stop making noise when the slenderman was creeping around the house, so someone shot it at some point. Just an idea.
Any thoughts?

I think it's fairly obvious.

Slenderman got annoyed when Alex's dog started barking at him. Since he's an eldritch abomination, he figured the best way to get rid of Rocky was to kill him. Alex started seeking revenge for poor Rocky, and eventually got in way over his head. He tried to back out after Seth died/was captured, but Slenderman is not one to forget a grudge, no sir. He got back at Alex by kidnapping Amy, which got Alex and Jay back on his trail.

Now, in present time, Alex is kidnapped/dead, Slenderman holds a grudge against Jay for helping him, he kidnapped Jessica, which will prompt Jay to hunt him down, and the cycle begins anew.

It all makes sense now: Brian gave his life at gunpoint to avenge Rocky being left on his lawn, but alas, he succumbed to his bullet wound

Maybe the Operator didn't like dogs so he took Rocky away and made him a man (in seven days). Poor Alex just didn't recognise him so he started to make videos to Alex's best pal, Jay, askingJay to help him find Alex. It was all a little confusing for a human who had recently been a dog but Rocky made the messages as clear as he could.

This is how we know for sure Blasky isn't TTA: no golden underwear.

Brave Rocky the dog started barking at a man in the street, one fall night after his owner was taking him for a walk. Once his owner got home, the man, a shy fellow, was wondering whether or not the Dog was up for adoption and hoped to find a way to ask the owner, Alex. He tried everything he could, but nothing seemed to work. He tried hiring one of Alex's old castmates to ask, but the guy was so hopped up on drugs that he attacked, instead of asking. And thus, the series we know and love was born.

The memory loss? Jay should see a doctor.
The distortion? Stop buying shitty tapes.
