And again... ties to Germany and anti-semitism.

Bachrach wasn't just a regular portrait photographer in that era apparently.

Just a quick thought; what if the infamous "skin disease" Belle has is simply a fire burn?

Quite possibly. I thought of that a long time ago - I thought that the unedited photo of her might have some bad scarring or burns marks.

And I'm still not convinced that the photo on that burned paper is the original, unedited scan. Things that come up in the original photo don't come up in this one: the light in the corner of her left eye, the mark in the middle of her forehead... I wouldn't be surprised it this was a second editing (and a much better one)

I'm not entirely sure if it's about Nazis and anti-semitism, but there definitely are German references in this site. One of their files is named Germany.

Also, I've been comparing michiganburnings.png to belle m..png, and they seem pretty much identical except for the fact that belle m..png has been enlarged, rotated and the contrast turned up (some white parts washed out a little, some shadows became more prominent, etc.).

Do you think the rotation is important or was it just for aesthetics?

edit: Just checked out that site. http://ids.si.edu/ids/dynamic?container.fullpage&id=SIA-SIA2008-3267 seems to be exactly in the same style as Belle's photo. This is most likely the same photographer.

The Michiganburnings.png seems different. The eyes are way more shiny, no "scars" also...

The eyes are way more shiny because the contrast is changed and there's a bit of blue tint to the ink (or whatever it is)

Also, the only other major difference.. is that the line in the middle of her hair isn't there in the michiganburnings.png. This is really important because on the Formspring it stated that there was a reason for her odd hairline. Why did they change the hairline? To screw with people? And why would they need to burn the edges? Even if it was a physical burn and this is an actual image, the burn would need to have been controlled. The burning was obviously on purpose or someone just happened to have been dangling this picture over their fireplace or something.

If it does turn out that the organizers' intention was a social experiment instead of an ARG or just some art project, we are certainly giving them quite the performance. Everytime I think the quality and logic of the discussion on this thread can't get more ridiculous, new folks join in to blow my mind anew.

lolol I feel the exact same way. The thread really is getting ridiculous.

So picture taken 1934 ish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fires
* 1934 - Hotel Kerns Fire in Lansing, Michigan

That seems to be the only significant burning in Michigan around those years.

But they've stated that the image title doesn't have to be related to the content.

Since one of the images is "Friends - Close" perhaps a friend of hers died in the fire?

And yes, the Kerns one looks probable. The year fits, so does the place.

Yeah, I ended up in the Kerns Hotel fire too. The thing is it burned in 1934, so the photograph didn't even lasted one year?

I presume it actually lasted a long time, since we see it today. It probably got saved from the fire, which is why it's so special...
