[Book] House of Leaves

Has anyone read this? A friend of mine picked it up a few months back and after he finished it he shoved it into my hands saying "READ NOW!"

It is probably the best book I have ever read. It is a pure work of genius. To try to explain what it is about would be pointless, it is so complex. In a nutshell, its about a house larger in the interior than on the exterior. (Think about that for a minute.)

The book is written to give a feel of realism, like the the things in the story(ies) actually happened. An Alternate Reality Novel! Check out the reviews here and here. You won't regret it.

I swear that there used to be a thread around here about it a couple of years ago, but I can't find it now! I know PaleFigure and I discussed it a bit. It's a great book, and there are layers within layers of mystery to it. Also read The Whalestoe Letters.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are many puzzles hidden in the book, including first letters of sentences, anagrams, etc. Also there is the theory that various people never existed, the story never happened, and so forth.

It's like an ARG in a book, IMO.

Good book, but I could only read one or two of the intertwining threads. Maybe i'll go back and read the other parallel story lines. I tried to explain the concept to someone once -- and it IS a concept book:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's about the hallway which is longer than the house itself.

But it's really about the explorers who enter that hallway.

But it's really about the film of the exploration.

But it's really about the documents which describe the film.

But it's really about the blind guy who transcribed the film onto the documents.

But it's really about the neighbor who found the documents after the blind guy died.

But it's really about the book the neighbor wrote to pull together the documents which describe the film of the explorers entering that hallway.

But it's really the documentation of the writing process and the research into the house and the film commentaries and the follow-up with the explorers years later.

But then again, the book just appeared out of nowhere, passed thru the underground, and an editor found it and published it, and added footnotes to the footnotes.

Trippy.

It's my all-time favourite book, the best thing I've ever read.
The incredible depth to it, the fact that you can read it a hundred times and still discover something you missed before, the questions it raises, the serious messing with your brain it does...
I love it. I own two copies, a regular softcover edition that I loan out to people and a hardcover "blue" edition that is solely MINE and nobody else touches it.
But it's certainly not for everyone. I've tried loaning it to people and they just can't handle it. Some give up after only a few pages, some get about halfway, then it's just too much. But I still recommend it to everyone I can and encourage them to at least give it a try.

Just don't go to the official forum for it. They'll eat you alive.

Hahaha. xD I joined the official BBS the other day. They're insanely brilliant.

And I can understand why some people can't handle it. Its like what Hunter S. Thompson says in his response to the film interview with Karen Green.

Quote:
"...in two words: ****ed up... very *****ed up. Okay three words, four words... very very ****ed up." -- from What Some Have Thought, Pg. 363 HoL

And that is why, IMO, it is so awesome.. Surprised

Well, yes, they are that. Are also mercilessly unforgiving.
My advice: before you post *anything* on that board, make sure you use the search function to look for every word contained in your post, as well as every known synonym for every one of those words, and then just for safety's sake read through every single line of every single post of every single thread on the entire forum, including people's signatures and any external sites they link to.
Actually, you should probably do all that twice, just to be sure.
Because god help you if you don't, and you mention something that actually has been said before, because then half the members there will immediately jump down your throat, screaming "SEARCH FUNCTION!!!" at you until your eyes bleed and your kidneys get a white mucus all over them and you've been collectively mass-flamed back to the Mesozoic Era.
Oh, and if you express disagreement to this "kill em all" doctrine, you're labelled a baby-eating fascist.
And *then* collectively mass-flamed back to the Mesozoic Era.

I'm just warning you, is all. My old war wounds from that place still flare up from time to time.

PaleFigure, I too have belonged to 'emotional' forums, so I feel your pain. Moving on, we won't ever do that to you.

Yeah, mine too. I did not find that forum worth it.

I definitely recall a thread about this ages ago. Must be in the deep archives, or lost in a move along the way. Can only find a passing reference by palefigure in discussions of another game in 2003.

AD, if you'll recall, HOUSE OF LEAVES was a subtext that ran throughout Lockjaw, so it's possible you might be recalling THOSE discussions (which predated Unfiction, and were on the Yahoo! group for jawbreakers, if I remember correctly.)

aha! You're probably right. And those discussions were indeed in the yahoo group, not here.

So in addition to needing reading glasses, I am now losing my memory. Gah!

It was the mention of it in Lockjaw that led me to read House of Leaves in the first place, another reason why I love LJ and am grateful for being a part of it!
