No Disney at comic-con 2011 Well, This is a bummer. Just found out that Disney will be skipping SDCC this year
Many sources can be found with a simple google search, but here's one: http://www.insidethemagic.net/2011/06/disney-to-sit-out-2011-san-diego-comic-con-with-d23-expo-on-the-horizon/ Says that the D23 will be their place for major announcements following box office disappointments.
They also say that Warner Bros. and DreamWorks, plan to stay out of the 2011 San Diego Comic Con.
Interestingly enough, WB TV will be there and the WB booth will be there. I think that the article means that WB movies won't be there...
It's a bummer that this likely means no Tron related stuff at SDCC.

I wonder if they are not getting the expected results and feel it's not worth it anymore?

Here's a great article from MovieViral about that and the if the comic-con thing is leading to the end of ARG's and viral marketing in general: http://www.movieviral.com/2011/06/13/hollywood-second-guessing-comic-con-could-viral-marketing-be-next/

That also wouldn't surprise me, viral is not as expensive as a traditional campaign (I would imagine) but if you're still not getting as many butts in the seats, merch sales, etc. then you may elect to not continue.

I just don't get how people/studios can blame San Diego Comic-Con for making movies bomb. Example, people say that TRON was a bomb when it's production budget was $170 Million and has grossed over $400 million worldwide. How is that a bomb?!?!?
Silly business.
Studios lack of content (clips) and scheduling conflicts (filming) is the real reason if you ask me.
Fingers crossed we'll see Flynn's....

Personally, I still hold out hope that something will happen at SDCC.... just off site and not affiliated with SDCC. Kinda like how the Piranha 3D trailer was shown off site because SDCC would allow it due to content. One of the rumors is that Piranha 3DD will have a presence. Because of this I want to have faith that something will happen Tron related.

Trust me, I want to see it too. My only doubt lies in the thought that they sent all of the Flynn's Stuff up to Anaheim for the Flynn's Arcade there...

Oh they aren't blaming it. It's just the returns are not worth the expenditure (in their eyes), or they aren't getting the spread of info like they would have hoped.

I can see that, though I do see it as a sign of good will when they do certain events like SDCC. And the opposite when they don't, to their loyal fans. It's only a couple thousand people, I know it won't turn the tides for a films well being.

At the same time there apparently has been some backlash from more conservative people that go and want it to go back to the "old ways" rather than being the big event it is now.
Could even be that the convention was asking too much/wasn't able to accommodate them, new rules, etc. So it could be like E3 where they tried the one year without being over the top and ended up going back to the boobie extravaganza that we see now.

I have no doubt that 42E will be there in some capacity this year. I doubt we will see anything Tron related (but I will have my eyes peeled).

True. But you have to realize that 50% of the programming at Comic-Con is pure Comic Book. Publishers, artists, writers, etc. Then another 25% that is comic book "related" like batman video games, Hasbro Marvel Toys etc. Then everything else like animation, video game companies, sci-fi/fantasy literature, TV and movie studios.
Just because entertainment tonight doesn't cover the 50 years of MAD magazine panel, doesn't mean it's not happening.
Comic Book movies are being filmed right now so talent can't make it. The other thing is comic book movies came out before Comic -Con so there's no need to promote it. That all makes sense to me. It's the shock everybody's trying to get out of studios "pulling out" of comic-con that gets me. I'm sure Comic-Con is rather upset and frustrated with the lack of Hollywood participation since comic-con's been so good to them over the years.
We'll just have to wait and see!

I think part of the backlash (from fans) has been not so much the participation but what they are bringing to the table. They may have been niche franchises like Tron or other comic book movies, but they are trying to mainstream them while trying to pretend they are catering to the comicbook fans.
