Interesting. One theory I always liked is that the operator symbol represents Slenderman and can be used in the same way as an outline of a duck or a deer, sort of a "Slenderman Crossing, don't film here" warning sign.

This reminds me of the old chalk symbols that the hobos used to make in the old days, like a certain one would be "a policeman lives here," or "nice lady," or "can sleep in barn," or "man with gun."

"I once heard that in the old days, the pioneers used to survive by eating coral. Or was it mud? or grass? or sand? Hmm." --Spongebob

[SPEC] The Operator Symbol
(X)

I feel that this deserves it's own discussion topic.

After the latest Entry (44), there are some theories arising, such as it can be used to "summon" the Operator.

Thus far, the Operator symbol has been seen in many key locations and many times it is seen where the Operator appears. Include Alex's drawings and TTA's videos and I think there is more to this symbol than just a clever way to show a head with an x through it meaning no face.

Here is what we know:

-(X) first appears in Alex's "scribble" drawings. [Entry #8]
-The drawing of the symbol hangs above Alex's bed with other drawings. [Entry #11]
-(X) is on the ground, either scratched or drawn with chalk near where Alex runs into the Operator. [Entry #13]
-The symbol is carved into the Red Tower. [Entry #21]
-On a white board hanging in the room that Jay is "teleported" to in Brian's house, the symbol is written. [Entry #23]
-The symbol appears drawn at the beginning of the mysterious entry Jay claims he didn't upload. [Entry ######]
-In the tape that Alex sent to Jay where the Operator appears to Alex and Amy, (X) appears with the word "HELP". [Entry #26]
-The paper that Jay finds with the combination to the hotel safe, (X) replaces the number zero. [Entry #33]
-On the old tape from Alex's birthday, the symbol flashes over Alex's face. [enttry #37]
-An "8 Bit" version of the symbol appears at the end of TTA's video. [Intermission]
-(X) appears drawn over the odd "face" of the drawn "skully" with starts for eyes next to the Sigma S with the text "SO MUCH MORE THAN TIME HAS BEEN TAKEN". [Memories]
-Appears in the eye of a distorted image of a person, possibly Tim, with the text "YOU ARE YOU". [Inquiry]
-Once again Alex draws (X) with the word "OPERATOR" underneath similar to the symbol's debut in Entry 8. [Entry #44]

Note: Please contribute. I am almost certain I have missed other appearances. Let me know and I will keep this first post updated by editing it.

- It's used in Warning, in the O in "Eyes open" as well as all the circles in the end that get crossed out.
- The Twitter pictures right before Season 2 started.
- In one of its cooler appearances, it shows up at the end of Version. It appears to be just an X in the last frame, but when the YouTube buffering thing starts circling, it fits perfectly to make a (X).

ToTheArk seems to reference it a lot, obviously.
But I think there's more to it than meets the eye.

Interpret it any way you want, but I see a zero divided into four parts.
With the theory becoming more plausible that TTA consists of four Maskies, I'm starting to think they're somehow related.

Of course, MarbleHornets has a way of giving small bits of information that are completely unrelated. Until we have enough information to string these bits together, we're here making theories with only so much string. (not clever)Wink

There was another. Aaaaaghh, I can't remember which one. I'll have to go back and find it. It was from Entry ######, I think.

All of those were Masky.

I'm just sort of curious if the symbol is required for the Operator to show up. Without going back and watching all the videos, it occurs to me that for the most part, if there was no symbol, it was Masky who showed up, not the Operator. That brings into question how he starts stalking people, though; it'd be a bummer if any little kid who doodled an O with an X through it was now up for possibly being Slendystalked. Could it possibly just act as a teleportation marker?

As for the divided circle idea, I like the idea of it, but I'm not entirely sure if it's a symbol of the four different Masky-esque incantations. If it's a symbol for something like that, though, I think it would mean that there are four important pieces to the Slendy phenomena (sort of in a Holy Tetrad way).

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

But anywho, I've always thought the Operator symbol was the Slenderman/Operator, as the O is the head, and the X represents "No Face".

The Ark, The Masks, The Cameras and The Operator himself? You may be on to something.

This theory gets my seal of approval. The Operator symbol does seem to be split in 4. Which is very similar to EMH and TT symbols, with 4 parts.

Slightly off topic, but now after 44, I feel really scared after drawing all those Operator symbols around my school.

But Why Would Alex Scribble The Sign To Summon His Worst Fear?

If this takes place (chronologically) after 43, then it may be due to slender-influence.

I like the theory of the zero divided into 4 parts, those 4 parts symbolizing something relating to the Operator himself.

Just taking a stab in the dark that probably means nothing, but drawing from my knowledge of the Greek alphabet, the O could be either Omicron or Omega, and the X could be Chi. With all this talk of sigma, that's what its starting to make me think of but even I highly doubt my own idea. Laughing
