I think it's just an indicator for TO. Like, "Operator-related."

It's been in SO MANY places that I think a specific function is nigh-impossible.

"At the tower" was behind the OpSymbol. Operator had been "at the tower."

Operator symbol was on Tim's medical documents, specifically the surgery, implying TO has relevance there.

Operator symbols have been in a bunch of TTA videos and have been used for a few purposes, including decorative eye makeup.

Really, because Alex drew so many with words next to them, this is what kind of makes me think it amounts to little more than shorthand for "Operator."

It means he has no face.
The circle is his head/where his face should be.
The X means no.
It could mean something more, but we won't know for certain until Trosepim tells us/MH ends

The first time we see it, it's because Alex has crossed out the head on his drawing of the Operator, so I agree with the more standard assumption that it comes from his lack of a face.

Besides that I think it just means "This is Operator related". Jay finds a weird tower thing? It may have no significance whatsoever. But if Jay finds a weird tower thing with an operator symbol on it? It's related to the Operator (And thus, from a more OOG perspective, the plot.) Or, if you find a medical paper that says someone has been coughing, it's probably smokers cough or something. But if you find one that says they've been cⓍughing, they are fucked!

With the old slenderman mythos, which the operator is partially based on, the more you think of the monster they more he comes after you. I always felt the characters would kind of dig their own graves by becoming obsessed with what was stalking them. They draw the symbol because it reminds them of him, something they fear but something they also don't understand, and humans tend to want to understand. It's also like when trauma victims try to relive what happens to them over and over, whether they really want to or not. Some people may say it's silly and illogical, but it's why people who get abused will stay with an abuser. On the outside, it doesn't make sense, but they feel that they are going to relive this until they find some resolution, but they usually just wind up in a bad place. They draw the symbols because they're frightened by the operator but have not come to terms with it, thus they want to relive it.

Also, it's a very recognizable symbol that is in a lot of places. Railroad signs, underground pipe marking that construction workers use, on clothing that's not washer safe. That might be how the operator works too, makes his victims draw the symbols and making his victims lure him in.

It can't mean "Don't film" for Alex because he draws them on camera in Entry #44. Unless he didn't realize he was wearing a camera. And wanted to remind himself not to film in his own room.

Maybe it means to film, i.e. make sure to have a camera on this area/spot; Alex takes special care to film one in #56. Of course, maybe that was his first encounter with the symbol, and thought it was so peculiar or whatever that he copied it in all his drawings, and it became a meme of sorts for the people involved in all that Operator business.
