I think that it just represents the Operator, as he influences memories, people draw the (X) to symbolize where he's been seen, and possible how many times. Alex puts it above his bed because, imagine that, Operator was in his room, just above his bed. The (X) to me has no magical properties, it is simply there to show sightings of the Operator.

(OoC but I had to: Kinda like in Doctor Who, when they started marking themselves to show everytime they spotted the Silence)

Oh yay, I'm not crazy! (:

But anywho, I've always thought the Operator symbol was the Slenderman/Operator, as the O is the head, and the X represents "No Face".

I always thought similarly. The two theories may not be mutually exclusive, though! There are other ways to denote something not existing, like scribbles. I always wondered why the "X" in particular other then it looks neat .

It's just that Slendy is far from a one man band in MH - I feel like his summoning symbol would be indicative of that.

So, I'm watching Constantine right now (on AMC) and a bit ago the operator symbol popped up as Mammon's sign... Satan's son's sign.

(From the movie. Image stolen from this blog.)

Proof that the Operator is the spawn of Satan! Ok, evidence of it. Ok, circumstantial evidence of it. Ok, maybe it's just a coincidence. Still nifty, though.

This actually made me giggle a bit. Perhaps I'm just a sick and twisted person.

Like others have said before me, I've always imagined the (X) to be "No Face". To basically explain the strange creature stalking them. They go to draw his face and... no features. Without features, it just looks like a circle/oval. The "x" is like crossing out the face.

But I do like the "four parts" theory. o: That is actually rather interesting.

 To The ARC?

So--I have been kinda not around lately but I was sitting here and I had a sudden insight.....
I don't mean this as an offense--but I'm not sure if the MH crew even knows this or thought of it--I don't doubt their cleverness....
Having said that--I was thinking about the Operator Symbol and what the "ark" is and thought of a different "ARC".....the arc of a circle and I suck at math but am all into spiritual stuff and profound things like "pi" and the "golden ratio" and mystical things like that.
I'll just leave this here......

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mentally rotate the O about 45 degrees.

Math major here, trying not to rage about pi and the golden ratio being considered spiritual or mystical.

But anyway, it's entirely possible for an arc to go all the way around to where it starts (essentially becoming a circle). Maybe ToTheArk wants to take Jay back ToTheBeginning, where this whole Operator thing began.

...or maybe he just wants to take a trip to France to see the Arc de Triomphe.

Pi and the golden ratio are not spiritual. Just proof that the universe is very well-made and largely consistent within its own laws of nature/physics/etc at the level we can observe.

Afterthought: Kind of exactly the opposite of what The Operator is supposed to represent (alien, unnatural, etc). Hmm...

Just a thought of my own: how many MH crew are there? and how many times have we seen the operator symbol(or an X through a Heads' eyes) in the TTA videos? could there be a correspondence? I'm going through them now but if anyone knows post away

Another lurker/first-time poster here.

I have a couple theories about what the Operator symbol is supposed to symbolize, although I have varying levels of agreement with them.

I think at this point I mostly agree with a combination of some of the more common theories: "no face", or somehow meaning the absence of something. Perhaps it symbolizes that someone is "marked" (which is given further credence by certain TTA videos, including Inquiry).

My more far-fetched idea is something I thought of after watching Entry #38. Sometimes trees are marked with spray paint or something else when they're going to be cut down. Sometimes a pattern along the lines of that symbol's used. Since there is a whole lot of back story regarding the forest/Rosswood Park, I was thinking it could mean that certain individuals are to be "cut down", whether that means death, or whatever is going on with Alex. I doubt this is what's intended but it's a possibility.

Yanno, this has occurred to me as well -- with the latest "minus centroid" tagline for the TTA vid making me wonder again. (As someone mentioned it can be used to find the center of a sphere such as the earth I think. I donno. Math is SO not my thing.)

Maybe TTA is just a bad speller? (This is the only thing that makes me think it's merely cooincidental, since if you wanted to say "arc" you'd merely print it as such.)

I donno. Something to think about though, for sure.

Ok.....Let me put this a DIFFERENT way.
Objectively-Pi,the golden ratio,E=MC2,The Gravitational Constant,Fibbonacci's Sequence, etc etc etc etc etc...are mathematics and the numbers, formulas, proofs, equations are all objective expressions/rules-however you care to put it that follow certain logic.

But SUBJECTIVELY...to ME,such things evoke in me a certain "spiritual" feeling,emotion--whatever that equates to me on a DIFFERENT level.Their elegance and the way they relate and intertwine resonates in a way that I refer to as MYSTICAL/SPIRITUAL,and since I have now qualified my statement to NOT include those of you who don't feel the same way, which is fine, then hopefully I clarified part of my original point and I realize now that for a moment--I forgot where I was at and I apologize.

I made an OBJECTIVE statement about a SUBJECTIVE experience.Kinda like some folks here and other places saying that they "jizzed themselves" over something in an entry or a person, place or thing expressed in the mythos.First of all--objectively--I doubt if anyone REALLY LITERALLY jizzed themselves over such things. But maybe they DID--and IF they did--then who am I to say that since I DIDN'T jizz over it,then it's impossible that THEY did or could---or if they even meant it as a figure of speech--I knew what they meant and in what context.

It is not for me or anyone else to judge or invalidate what moves someone else, and I feel some things that are said on these forums may be somewhat nit-picky and petty.I am quite sure that anyone reading my post got the gist of what I was attempting to express...and it's even fine to differ with me or to say "Well....it doesn't have that meaning for me--but I know what you are expressing/presenting in a general way" and leave it at that.

If I had a dollar for every post, statement, troll, opinion on these forums that people write/upload/publish that I differed in opinion about or that did not resonate with me personally--I'd be a wealthy woman.
I have no problem with difference of opinion or with someone pointing out a technical FACT.But I DO have a problem with the way some people go about it.

Before this moment--I have never felt compelled to make such a post/reply.I have better things to do--especially now since my mother died of cancer last week and I am overwhelmed with grief.
I come to these forums to escape and be entertained--I am NOT here to debate and argue.

I realize my words are likely to be taken as harsh or bitchy and if I sound that way--I apologize.I respect other people and their opinions, feelings, and worth. If we all agreed--it'd be a boring world. What I object to is the disdain in another's tone.I see no call for it.But,like I said--sometimes I have to remind myself where I'm at and the relative age of people here.I am likely at least twice the age of most on here.
Now--NAMASTE Cool
