Re: Ok..12 Hours is my limit

Hmmm.. I'm stuck and judging by the responses so far, possibly on the wrong track.

What I've done so far:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

So, by my read I should take the 8x3 grid and write out the characters I find following the pattern:

4 | 3 | 2 | 1 - 4 | 3 | 2 | 1
5 | 2 | 1 | 0 - 5 | 2 | 1 | 0
6 | 7 | 8 | 9 - 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

(The three underlined characters are 10, 11, and 12)

If that makes sense. Essentially creating two "sixes" route-wise. Which would equal

TKLOTEMHRIEFRLEHODARTHOE

According to the third clue I should then create a new 8x3 grid (?):

T K L O T E M H
R I E F R L E H
O D A R T H O E

This is supposed to lead me to a riddle of some kind, right? Way off?

Any help is appreciated.

hint three tells you how to do it pretty clearly, just read it closely. Its easy to think you know what its telling you to do and just skim it. I didn't read it closely at first and was sort of doing the opposite of what it tells you to do.

That is, the previous suggestion to "encode" rather than "decode" is helpful. Pretend the letters you see is a message you want to encode using your technique. How would you "encode" that message?

Of course, that just gets you the riddle you need to answer. Like others, I wasn't sure if it should be taken literally or figuratively. Lot's of answers seemed reasonable (like synonyms to the true answer), and I just had to try a few until one worked.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
this:

T K L O T E M H
R I E F R L E H
O D A R T H O E

is apparently not it then? If not please explain why this is not what the 3rd clue is telling me to do?

Painful

That took a while... "encode" first helped. Thanks.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Drawing the "6" USING the letters given instead of attacking the puzzle right away looking for a "6"

It was annoying that OLKTH adds up to 66 as the does the next letters ELRTFE. Thought I had something with both adding up to 66. Boy, was I way off the beaten road (pun intended). Shocked [/spoiler]

I keep trying something like

Oedipus wrecks

for the riddle, but I'm obviously barking up the wrong tree. Any help?

Try thinking *way* more literally and less...literaturely.

For others who aren't even this for: I solved this one without hints, and thus happened into it a little differently, not only correctly but quickly - I was the #3 solver (and it's the first time I've ever been REMOTELY close to the top, so no, I did not hack or cheat). My suggestion:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Do a quick Google search on Route 66; see what kinds of terms show up. Without doing any special "patterns", see what words you can make out of the letters in the sign. I found the "key" phrase, then figured out the remaining words. The rest was a matter of coming up with the right answer, which I would've gotten sooner if I'd been less...proper. This part can be a little maddening because there is more than one "right" answer, but only one that's accepted - and that one's really not completely technically accurate. (Just sayin', M.)"

I'd love hints on how to get past the "riddle" that is the second part. I had the first part deciphered right away but have googled/tried everything I can think of relating to the riddle, and nothing. No luck. There's a Google Book that comes up, but no luck there. Any help?

Wikipedia was a big help.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Both to identify what (noun) refers to, and to figure out what could be considered to have (verbed) that (noun).

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Actually, I'd found there are at least three acceptable variations of the solution. I'd solved by guessing the shortest variation, then, after I'd seen the revealed solution, I logged out and tried M's full answer (which, of course, was right) and two other variations, one of which also worked.

As an aside, I was frustrated by my thought process on this one. I'd treated the letters as an anagram, and, aided by a quick perusal of the Wikipedia page, came up with the deciphered string within the first ten minutes. However, just as I'd done with the SATOR square puzzle, I'd entered the decoded phrase, and when that didn't work, I discarded it and went off on another tack. Once 60 minutes passed, I set it aside.
After playing around with it the next day, I again looked the deciphered phrase on my scratch sheet and realized it's probably not coincidence that that's what got spelled out. A little more pondering led me to figure it out. It should help in the future to keep in mind that sometimes what is to be deciphered might just be a crossword-style clue toward the true solution.

Finally!

I finally got it - but along the way I
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
nearly started re-reading Grapes of Wrath. I totally thought that a certain plot line there was what the riddle was referring to.

Also confused

I think I may be on the right track:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The phrase "The mother road" appears to be part of the clue

But I got that from a quick google search. I think I'm lost on how to do the grid.

[ ][ ][ ][x][ ][x][ ][ ]
[ ][ ][ ][x][x][x][x][ ]
[ ][ ][ ][x][x][x][x][ ]

Any suggestions?
