first off, you are trying to define a marketing campaign ARG, and frankly you are wrong anyway. The story/chars don't need to be seperate from the property it is advertising for at all. For example, the ad camp ARG for 2012 used woody harrison's movie character as the main game character. Or how about "Why So Serious?" - do i even need to explain that one? Smile

The difference between an ARG and a plain old viral campaign is the GAME aspect. Can you play it? is there something to solve or participate in? Not just a minimal amout of interactivity. There is, and will forever be i'm sure, debates about what makes something ARG, immersive fiction, interactive fiction, viral, or transmedia - and often these things over lap, which is what makes it such a fierce debate. a good marketing ARG better darn well BE viral, or it won't be considered a success.

BACK ON TOPIC - FWIW this appears to be interactive viral marketing. there are little things to do here or there, but no character interaction, nothing to actually do. no real story, just little tastes of stuff to make you crave the movie.

 		"Why so Serious?" is the definition of what I'm talking about. Yes, the joker was a major figure in it, but it mostly, from what I saw involved first the police and then the joker's henchmen, then the police again, all using characters that have nearly no introduction in the film.
To be honest, I haven't heard about that Woody Harrelson thing. Sounds like more of a Viral Marketing Campaign to me though.
And, yes, I meant Marketing Campaign ARG, I felt that was obvious, and so didn't need to state it.
I agree about the Game thing. I don't remember saying anything disagreeing with that. Again, I felt that was obvious.
To be honest, it doesn't really matter that much. From the player/consumer point of view, it's done the same way.

I argued for this being an ARG a week or two ago, because that's the way it seemed like it was going at the time, with the inclusion of the real email address and the promise for more "examples" if you contacted that. Now that it hasn't gone anywhere, and doesn't look like it will, I absolutely agree that this is a viral marketing campaign.

This also seems to happen when they're possessed in the first two movies.

I also read on one of the sites posting this image that there is a synopses as well (can't confirm this yet): "While trying to get video proof of Bloody Mary, the two young girls are first confronted by the monstrous demon haunting them in the first and second movies."

Look closer directly at the image from the PA3 website...
look at the drawings on top of katie and kristi, particularly the creepy one on top of katie's bed (our right). Any thoughts on THAT!!! It's like something's trying to reach to them (its hand is extended).

Someone mentioned in one of the Bloody Disgusting forums that the spacing of TOBI is actually more like T_O__BI_ and that perhaps this is like a game of hangman where you have to find the word that fits. So, eight letter words beginning with Tho- or Tro- or Too- ? (If it's in fact one word and not two.)

So i saw the new trailer on the website... and i had a few things to say.
1) the scene where the house is on fire happens on sept. 17 at 2:49 am. Remember katie had said their house was destroyed in a fire... but then the scene where their mom gets pulled when she says "lets just get out of here" happens at 3:02am. Unless the scene happens at another house, which it doesnt because that looks like her bedroom... how could that time be right? U know what im saying? Unless another house was on fire?

 		and, AND... the wall in that creepy cellar/closet/whatever it is with the drawing of the spooky girl has the word "hunter" backwards. freaky!

maybe the name hunter, despite the tons of therapy that probably followed that made them forget most of what happened in their youth, kind of just stayed with kristie... and naming the baby after that name brought the demon back! he was like "awww how sweet, you remembered me! now, i'm taking your baby, bitch!!!"

Aside from that, though, you still have to wonder whose house that was on fire... cuz after that fire on the 17th they still do the bloody mary thing on sept. 24th, in what looks like is still their intact house, and the poster clearly shows them sleeping in the same house later that same night on the 24th... unless that's not gonna be in the trailers.

this thing is gonna be huge!
