@ Nathanial:

It sounds almost to me as though they're bleeping out specific words.

The three 'beeps' aren't multitonal, which would rule out the idea of a phone keypad. One at 4.3s, one at 10s, and the last just shy of 20s.

However, the second "beep" does not have the same response as the first and last ones -- if you recorded a 'beep' with a microphone, you'd expect to also see frequency harmonics all the way up the spectrum. The second beep, however, is solidly fixed to the 100Hz range. Looks like it was digitally added in post. Curious.

Finally, I noted a "chirp" that occurs at just about 5.5 seconds in.

Anyone got some decent LMS filtering software? Audacity won't cut it in this case, I fear.

I'm going to just be upfront and apologize.

First off, I'll just declare it now, I'm X.

I had big plans I wanted to do with this game, but I recently ran out of time due to work taking over my life lately. I'm very sorry to upset anybody, or make anybody feel bummed out.

Setting up the automated voice mail box to give you the zip file password was difficult to do, and not many people actually called the number (understandable).

Based on how people played the game, I was going to fork the game down several different roads.

The first audio file that was hidden in the comments (the day the site launched) was a song from the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack titled "Eyes on Me". I changed the pitch, speed, and reversed it.

The next audio file, 7.playme was actually bits and pieces from the intro of Wish You Were Here, from Pink Floyd (depending on which version of the song). Again, this was sped up, reversed, and all sorts of stuff. I just threw in some weird sounds for good measure.

I do want to note, that I actually *do* use a phone pad in one of the recordings. First I press 1. Then later in the recording 7. I was hoping somebody would catch on to this, that's why I tried to throw clues in this thread. Again, this makes 17.

As for the significance of 17, I had some rough ideas. I was monitoring this thread to see what people came up with, hoping for a little inspiration. Somebody mentioned that 17 is the least random number. I got a big laugh out of that, as 17 was a totally random number.

The idea came from a South Park episode, in which the boys ask Chef what the correct age to start having sex is, in which Chef replies "17".

I, again, apologize for any disappointment I may have caused. I had fun while it lasted, but I just ended up losing interest, and time. I did have things plotted out, unlike the people at 8-3-11. This wasn't ever going to be viral marketing (while I do have a indie video game series I'm developing) or a social experiment, just a fun ARG.

I found this place via the Darren's Timeless Memories thread, and since then, I became fascinated with ARG's. I thought it would be fun to try, so I took some time to write up a story, and put some clues out.

A programming friend of mine, CaptainJet (the creator of this thread) made the thread to help me launch this, as I wanted to follow forum rules, to an extent.

So I apologize again, and I had fun. I'm updated the X-AVIER site right now to point to this thread as "proof" I am who I say I am.

As for the name X-AVIER? Obviously, it stands for Xavier, who is the name of a character from an RPG game series I've been developing for a couple of years now. The name was totally random, when registering the $2 domain name.

The picture in the copyright IS the Mona Lisa. So cheers to whoever figured it out. I just mirrored her face, and did some Photoshop magic. I also drew on XVII on her forehead. So that's how I "figured out" it was 17 on her head.

I apologize again, and sorry this ended up being a disappointment, but hopefully some of you found some brief entertainment.

I do want to note, that as I was outside having a cigarette, I realized the date. No, this announcement wasn't plotted, and it has nothing to do with 8.3.11.

It was completely coincidental, and not intended.
