I'm honestly really excited to see how this plays out. It seems to be a little more heavily marketing-based than some others I've read about.

I know that some ARGs have involved purchasing puzzles outright, but most of the ones tied to an end product (movie, TV, whatever) seem to mostly be emptying the marketing budget as an investment in building fan loyalty.

This one seems to be trying to be a little more financially self-sustaining by rewarding players for purchasing an item. If this game can prove that ARGs can build a little revenue, cutting the expense of running one, it might establish a new more financially feasible pattern - and it might mean companies are more willing to try ARGs as a marketing campaign.

I might be completely wrong here. I don't know. But I work in marketing and I've actually talked about ARGs with my bosses at a couple of jobs, and they've always been curious about the ROI. It seems risky with questionable reward. "But it's awesome!" isn't sufficiently convincing, unfortunately. Sad

(I will say I don't even LIKE gum but I find myself developing brand loyalty to 5 Gum. It helps that they have an extremely high quality product. Also they're just plain cool.)

In Soviet Russia...

So it's kinda like:

*horrid fake russian accent*
ARG not for Gum, Gum is for ARG.

Jokes aside, I really would like to know how long have they been nursing this ARG before putting it to light(as someone said previously), because I feel that it might get complicated soon.

Just my opinion, but I think Facebook has turned a lot of players off considering it doesn't really immerse the player into the game. Were they (42E) worried about alienating players by using Facebook as a vehicle for new stages (voting, announcing new phases in the game)?

I second some annoyance at Facebook as an outlet. It's cool if info is duplicated elsewhere, or at least if the content isn't locked so that people WITHOUT Facebook can't see it. I don't have an account and don't want to need one for it; especially since for me it breaks the "AR" part of the "ARG". Facebook feels jarring.

But as a prop/art nerd what I really want to know is... where did they get the person to make those iceflies? Because they are incredibly wicked and I want to fawn over said person's work. And where they got the crates, since I can't find a source to make a replica XD;

^ that.... (also an art/ prop nerd)
I basically logged back in to say that all my questions would be icefly related or directed at the artists.... Why an "icefly"? Were they skeptical at all about associating bugs with gum? Where did they get the concept for the logo, and who came up with the designs and ideas for these wickid cool canisters? (sorry to be repetitive, but there really is no other way to describe these things other than wickid...) I have been staring at the one I snagged yesterday, and it's a pretty sharp design.

The sheer number of brands Wrigley's makes sort of supports the idea that this gum was meant for this. They took up several whole shelves at the store.
