The D23 Pulse -- The Disney Wave for us on the Grid

For those of you guys not in the know, D23 is the official Disney fanclub and it holds an expo every other year with this year's expo being the second convention Disney has put together. There will be new movie announcements, introductions to new theme park attractions, and everything else Disney. This convention is attended by Disney bigwigs like Chief Creative Officer John Lassetar and Disney President Robert Iger.

Anyway, I'll be buying my ticket soon. When I first thought of going down, I was looking forward to wearing my UP Russel costume to the expo. Now with socalsteve's thread about TRON being dead to Disney, it gave me a thought about what we could do...

THE D23 TRON PULSE!!

Think about it. There will be thousands of Disney geekoids, like myself, congregating in Anaheim complete with full wallets and a soft part in the heart for all things Disney. Assuming nothing is done TRON-wise at Comic Con, this will be our one big chance to be our own FLYNN STILL LIVES movement for a continuance in the digital franchise we so love!

Instead of a DIGITAL PULSE, it is time for a PEOPLE PULSE to get us back on the grid!

Off the bat, I'm thinking it would be cool to get a "protest group" together much like 42E helped us do at Wondercon, complete with signs, FLYNN LIVES t-shirts, and other accoutrements. Since this is a Disney event, we won't be beligerent or too demanding, but we could show love to all things TRON and let it be known there is a stable fanbase of TRON devotees still out there and ready to see where the Grid takes us in further TRON movies and attractions!

Let me know what some of you guys think about my idea!

LET THEM KNOW THAT FLYNN STILL LIVES!!

Oh, if the Expo was coming to Disney World I'd be there with you. (But as predicted they are ignoring Florida again.)

They are having events there as well, but your problem is that you don't have a convention center next door. Yes, I am holding you accountable for lack of said building project. Razz

Oh no, you found my dastardly plans! (And I would have gotten away with it if is wasn't for you meddling kids ... er ... Flynn Lives-ers!)

It just confuses me sometimes. Disney used to have all these huge Disneyanna conventions right on property but never uses that space for their own conventions. I know it would likely be more expensive to bring all the accoutrements of the Expo here but they'd have a "captive audience" that would more than offset that cost. :/

Disneyland only had one (I think) official event and that was the "Homecoming" in 2001, guests who flew in got an extended stay due to 9/11 and I think that was the last time they ever did one.

I wonder if a big part of it has to do with the demographics for DL vs WDW? In terms of fans, DL has more local fans (which causes some problems on packed days since they have to close the park to non AP/Hotel guests first). When they hold it here they can fill up the convention center (parking is a massive headache those days since AP holders will park over at disneyland for free and take the shuttle). At WDW the fans are more destination fans so getting them to come is a bit more involved, which would explain why they do more small scale events with exclusivity.

I would have to agree with that. Being in Fla myself and a frequent Orlando visitor, the folks in Orlando and the immediate surrounding areas are not as rabid Disney fans as the people I know in Southern California. It almost surprised me about how worked up they seem at times concerning even small park changes (some of which opened my eyes to park development...specifically comparisons to Disney's CA and Animal Kingdom in Orlando). One friend even had an annual pass just to get his favorite ice cream in Disneyland. I've never heard of that level of devotion from anyone in Florida, although I'm sure there are definitely some folks here like that.

I went to WDW recently, and I was really disappointed with 1. The lack of TRON related merch (got in to the ARG late, so no swag for me) and 2. The general lack of interest about the subject from any crew members, none of them really seemed to care that there was NO promotion whatsoever, save for the monorail decorations.

Indeed, Disney park fans are crazy. It got worse when they brought back Cpt. Eo, people were dropping 60-80 (I forgot the normal day price) to see an MJ movie. They also complain like disney committed a war crime whenever they change anything. Then there's the whole elevation of Walt to god status.

I think a lot of that had to do with DCA being in the midst of it's big rennovation/redressing. We've got tons of construction going on and it takes your eyes away from what's missing/being worked on as well as gets people interested in other parts of the park after dark.

Oooo, what part of Florida? (If you don't mind me asking of course.)

Yeah the demographics are very different between Disneyland and Disney World as the "locals" and "those tourists" go.

The hard-core Disneyland people for the most part live close enough to the parks that they can get there in under half an hour or easily via public transportation because Disneyland is out in the open far more that Disney World is. Disney World is designed to be self-contained away from the rest of Florida which is more of a pain for the hard-core fan base. The majority of the hard-core Disney World people don't (or won't) live in Orlando area. I know you'd have to bribe me with a really sweet job to move within 25 miles of there. You go out about 75-200 miles from Disney World and there is the crazy "ring" of fans. I'm 108 miles away in Sebastian and if you poll 10 random people odds are 1 or 2 will have some kind of ticket in their wallet or purse. And public transportation that services Disney World is a joke or nonexistent.

I think the main difference is:

The "locals" of Disneyland are in the 16-26 range that go/can go 2 or three times a month for a day-trip with a small disposable income seeking a place to have fun.

The "locals" of Disney World are more the 24-34 range that go/can go 1 a month for a weekend with a slightly larger disposable income seeking a place to get away.

I think in the end it all comes out even as to the number of us crazed fans but at WDW I think we get a bit more spread out and lost in the crowd.
-----

Just as a side note I know of a handful of people that live very close to WDW that make a trip 2 or 3 times a week to get a Dole Whip at Magic Kingdom or go drinking at Epcot. As for my group of friends we have the Seasonal Pass and we go at least once a month for an overnight stay and once a month for a day trip and we'd be there once a week or more if we didn't have to drive but could jump on a train or something

Don't forget people like me where we go to downtown disney (the DLR one) have lunch meeting, a quick ride for those that have passes, and then back to the office. Very Happy
