I haven't done much back reading on this one yet, but, after a little research, the idea that it's a Stigma makes more sense than a Sigma simply because Stigma has a good multiplicity of meanings. The wiki that Zaarg posted notes that a Stigma means a mark, dot, puncture, or sign, along with the fact that, in English, "stigma" equates itself with a tarnish, usually related to socially inappropriate action. In any good mystery, misdirection is key, so using a symbol that can mean so many things (each of which has some loose connection to the whole story) would make more sense, especially since it's also somewhat esoteric. The best part is that a reversed Stigma with a dot under is one of the original contributors to a question mark.
