Antisocial Media

So, yeah.

I've found the puzzle, but I readily admit that I'm MUCH better at the logic puzzles than at these time-based clickers. (Not that there have been others on TMT, but this style of game I've never done well at.)

I understand that there is a 5-click solution, which is apparently 'elegant', but I'm curious if there is some way to work it out ingeniously, perhaps working from the symbols on the tiles, or something, or if it's really just based on understanding the mechanics of this type of game.

(Also, I tried using Firebug to slow ti down, but I'm not at all Java-savvy, and when I attempt to change the timer, it resets to two seconds as soon as I hit the "Start" button. I know I could get this done if I had the time to play with it...)

I know that there was a workaround posted in the old thread, if someone can't find it I'll take a look.

If that doesn't work, perhaps you could work out, with an image of the starting conditions, perhaps, how best to place your five clicks? I mean, the rules are simple: gravity pulls down always, and to the left whenever a column is removed.

You realize that clicking a block removes contiguous blocks of the block clicked on.

You should also realize that when a column (the entire column) goes away, the columns to the right of that column slide left.

From that information you should be able to deduce roughly what area you'll need to be clicking in.

Applying those rules and looking at the pattern should reveal how a cause effect pattern would impact the board. Get to logic'n!

Side note: I also used Firebug, though I paused the execution of the script and then modified the timer variable. It did extend the time, but clicking start had a time stamp which also does a compare to see if you've circumvented the timer.

Thinking mixed with Trial and Error

I didn't use any JS tricks. I tried to think it through, but there are a lot of possibilities.

Just randomly doing trial and error, I found a tile that seemed to go in a good direction, and from there, thought out the rest. I don't know if there is more than one 5-click solution (mine was either 4 or 5, I didn't count), but what I can say is that all the clicks of my solution are all within a couple squares of each other...something like two quick clicks on one square, move to a square next to that, and two or three more clicks (maybe I moved to a third square). Once I figured it out, doing so many clicks so quickly and so close to each other wasn't very hard.

Point being, if you think the solution involves having to move all around the "board" as you click, I can promise you there is an easier way that involves barely having to move the pointer at all.

For five clicks to work, they must be clicks with the most bang for the buck. I finished this 10th (I happened to be at my desk when the email came out) and I just, after a few attempts of wildly clicking quickly, methodologically went through it. The 2 seconds is a time pressure and to ensure the "elegant" solution -- if the 2 second constraint wasn't there, it'd be pretty easy to figure out. I just clicked a couple times

which happened to be the same spot
and after time was up, you can still see the puzzle behind it and plotted my next click (nearby). Then I played and clicked 3 times. Then 4. Then the solution. Even easier, print screen the puzzle and figure it out that way (black out blocks that would disappear after each click).[/spoiler]

here's my 2 cents:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
don't waste time clicking tiles on the bottom line.
it seems logical that the last tiles should end up there... but it's also dumb and doesn't work. the answer is obvious once you start looking anywhere on the grid.

Just don't get it

I have everything else - all the theorems, all the seals (except date ones before I started) and I just can not get this one.

The other one that gave me total fits was the clock one -- so I guess it shows what skills I am lacking!!

Any further tips or pushes then what has been posted would be much appreciated. PM me if need be. I really want to get this one.

I have the screen shot of the puzzle and it doesn't help. I'm not even sure if clicking on certain patterns only remove those tiles and then others move down/over whatever. I'm just frustrated and have been trying on and off since it was presented.

You have This many clicks
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
five clicks.

Use them wisely. Each one will clear all connected icons, then what's left will fall down and to the left. There are four different icons.

Help for Emato

Emato,

I think many of the people who solved this as a "timed" puzzle are on newish and therefore faster computers -- we simply could not have solved it without the JavaScript hack because there was no way to get five clicks in on our five-year-old Mac -- let alone figure out if they were the "right" five clicks.

So I imagine you're in the same boat -- you are probably trying to play on a computer/connection that is too slow, and thus keep falling off the treadmill and hitting your head.

So I would heartily endorse going the JavaScript route. It took us two non-programmers about an hour to install Firebug and to figure out which relevant bit of the Javascript we wanted to change and how. So in a sense, that ended up being a puzzle of a different type!

We don't check this board very often, but we do check it, so leave more questions if you have them.
