The good book...The Push, Nevada Experiment: 1979-present

Ok, as many of you know, there's a book on Amazon, "The Push, Nevada Experiment: 1979-present"

What we still don't know is, what is the experiment, run by whom?

Also, why 1979? Watermark moved into Push in 1984, right? From 1979 to 1984, Push was going down the toilet. Was that part of the experiment?

I'm guessing they'll come back to the "bigger conspiracy" at the end...well, they would have, if it went to 13 episodes. Things bigger than a bar and a small-time casino.

Ok, as many of you know, there's a book on Barnes&Noble, "The Push, Nevada Experiment: Unlocking the Mysteries" by T. S. Griffin
( http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=0FVARXQQ8B&isbn=0786888644 )

Here's a funny thing, though, that B&N shows it being published by Little Brown and Company under this title, while Amazon shows it being published by Hyperion under the other title.

So someone on the Yahoo message board wrote to Hyperion, asking about the book. They received an email in return, telling them that the book has been cancelled and to get their money back from Amazon.

This book has been cancelled. Please contact Amazon for a refund.

I hadn't ordered the book, thinking that the whole thing was a ruse (as in a trick, dodge, subterfuge, con, scam, hoax, deception, ploy, stunt)...

My question was, why the choice in titles? Why the word "experiment" -- what is the experiment, and who is it run by?

Also, why did they choose 1975, when no dates in the game point to that year? Why not "1984 to present" since that's when Watermark moved into Push? What happened in 1975?

I wouldn't be surprised if they had planned on making the book part of the game.

The book & T.S. Griffin

As far as I can tell Little Brown is international or oversease sales, and as for T.S., I can't find his name anywhere in Push. Did anyone else? It was my understanding that Enoch was in touch with someone from Push, yet there has been no mention of him on any of the boards as a resident. Maybe I missed it. If anyone else has found it please let me know where to look.

Thanks,

Mary

The book & T.S. Griffin

I also sent an Email to an address for Otis Miller, and am waiting to see if it bounces. I don't have an Email address for this person, but I have tried one that I hope is going to go through.

The book & T.S. Griffin

It bounced back from Disney saying they were upgrading and could not deliver to Otis.MillerSPLATabc.com.

In today's Enochonline update, Enoch talks to T.S. Griffin about the goings-on in Push. I believe this is the first time T.S. Griffin has been used in-game.

"The Push, Nevda Experiment"

This ad appears in the classifieds of The Push Times:
Volunteers Needed. Clinical Trials. Healthy
Individual b/t ages of 18-55? A leading
research facility is conducting an important
medical research study. Smoker ok.
Enrollment is limited.

Perhaps this is the "Experiment" referred to in the title of T.S. Griffin's book?

I found the book also listed at books-a-million (listed as an outlet for Hyperion books)

http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books?id=2354155106128&pid=0786888644

They have the title as "The Push, Nevada Experiment - Unlocking the Mysteries"
by T. Solomon Griffiths
ISBN: 0786888644
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Date: Nov 2002

Yet another bit of disinformation for the collection.

Here it is.

Includes all kinds of files, info, names, and dates.

Pretty much everything except where the money is. Smile

The book is apparently a "bible" of sorts (no pun intended) to what was probably intended as the long-term structure of the show, and reveals lots of plot-related information which probably would have become more apparent had the show been allowed to run its intended 13-episode length or longer. It also contains a fair amount of surprisingly internally consistent and accurate sociological and legal analysis.

All in all, it's pretty well written, and reminiscent in certain respects of the TWIN PEAKS "set-pieces", THE SECRET DIARY OF LAURA PALMER and THE FBI TAPES OF DALE COOPER, insofar as it allows another look at the backstory of, and intent behind, the show. Kudos to Keith Quinn, apparently the main author of record, to Sean Bailey for his input, and to "Holden McNeil" (heh) and "Richard Greenleaf" (heh heh) for their pseudonymous input as well. (I shall hereinafter refer to their contributions as the "Good Jim Hunting" portion of the book.)

The big problem as I see it is that there's just SO damn much info crammed in there, it would have been difficult if not impossible to translate all of that into a small-screen visual medium even given the luxury of a serial, 13-to-20-episode story arc. As we suspected all along (SPOILER!!!!!) the real mastermind behind the plot appears to be T.S. Griffin, aka "drooling spoon-fed oatmeal man" from Martha's Boarding House. I also suspect, although I can't yet prove, that Al Prufrock's half of the Watermark "kill code" has somehow been hard-coded directly into his son, perhaps through media-based manipulation of HIS memories, and that if Jimbo ever DOES get his hands on Griffin's Bible he'd know exactly what to do with it. But how the hell would all of this dense exposition been spelled out in the course of a weekly hourlong TV show, especially one as concerned with creating a "mood" as Push, NV was? They would have had to cut down on the artsy-fartsy establishing shots a tremendous amount, and resorted to jam-packed nonstop voiceover just to get some of the ideas contained in the Griffin book across!

Nonetheless, an extremely interesting read. And extra kudos to Keith, Sean, "Holden" and "Dickie" for correctly explaining the Defective Grantor Trust concept. We'll make junior-league lawyers outta you boys yet!!

I was so pleased they would even bother to come up with an actual legal analysis to explain what they had done, instead of just making up some bogus "legal" escape valve. As you say, can't imagine how they intended to use or explain something so obscure in the show. Or why they would bother since this stuff even puts real lawyers to sleep. But nice to know they invested in the backstory to try to keep it all together.

Problems with the book.

My only problem with the book was that it was just so improbable. A Network [presumably one such as ABC] would never invest in such research directly. The type of data that Griffin's character describes is not only easily obtainable, but also freely available to anyone with a library card and basic knowledge of sociological research techniques. In other words, the reason for the experiment was pretty unbelievable to me. I work in an ad agency and deal with market/consumer/effectiveness research all the time. There is NO need to get "pure", isolated data -- statistical analysis has made it possible to get accurate data from your good old fashioned general pop. And these techniques are not new. They been doing it since the turn of the century [the last one, that is, not y2k].

Sorry to be one of those annoying, nitpicking bastards. Of course, the alternative -- a mad genius with billions of dollars starts the experiment so that he can eventually rule the world -- is just as stupid, but anyway ...

B.

Amazon Cancellation Notice

I just received an email this morning from Amazon cancelling my order for the book. Yeah, we already knew it was canceled via other sources, but this is definitely the clincher for me. I had been holding out hope that the cancellation was a construct by LivePlanet in the same way they pretended the show got canceled because of WaterMark coming after them, but no such luck. Sad
